QY 100/70 Display light new method 2023 (by HYPNOTIIC)

Hello fellow QY lovers!

After eyeballing the QY 70/100 for quite some time now i finally got the chance to get a almost mint condition QY100 for 100€. Pretty hard to find here in austria and it also didn't come with a smart media card.. but i was lucky once again and found and bought a perfect condition 16MB card the same day i received my QY100.

I immediately fell in love with this device, the sound selection, the quality, the mini keys, all the little details and features, sub menus... yall know what i'm talkin about haha..
The only real downside for me was the abscence of a display light as i mostly jam when its dark outside.

So i went through the same process most of qy70/100 users do.. googled the hell out of it, watched all Youtube videos on the topic and stumbled on two realistic solutions: the very risky backlight mod where you have to peel of the reflective film inside the LCD module and install a electro luminescent panel, the other option was using a gba sp display light to illuminate the screen from the front.

A third option would be hunting down the matching lcd module with display light (DMF-50202NY-LY) and simply swap it with the QY100 default display. This display however is so so hard to find and imo way too expensive for a 100€ device.

The EL panel mod wouldn't be too expensive but disassembling the lcd module, peeling off the reflective layer without damaging the screen and having to reposition the lcd afterwards to get the correct pixels to show up was a bit too risky for me and i didnt want to f up my new favorite piece of oldskool gear.. so i'd rather look into the option involving the gba sp display light as i did this mod before to add a display light to my old gbc. I also had two gba sp's lying around and was hoping one of them still had an intact display light but it seems i ruined one at the first attempt and the other one was successfully built into my gbc..

Looking up the prices of gba sp's nowadays (did the mod like 6 years ago) i realized this would be a easy but also too expensive mod for my qy100...

After days of fruitless research something else came to my mind, out of desperation and impatience rather than ingenuity.. i had an old Raspberry Pi TFT touchscreen laying around which i hardly ever use as its way too small for most apps i would use and which also has a screen light (led bar on the side that lights up a diffusive plastic layer).

On disassembling the raspi touchscreen i realized it had the perfect size for the QY, i didnt have to trim the diffusive plastic panel that would sit in front of the display and the led bar had enough space to fit under the lcd module without creating a huge gap. I was excited to wire things up and try everything out but in the process i almost messed up the led bar's flex cable.. had to cut of the damaged part of the cable and scratch off the protective plastic layer to expose the copper on the remaining bit of the flex cable, so i could again get a proper contact for + and - wires i wanted to solder to the led bar and the QY.

These flex cables are a pain in the azz to solder to and after two nerve wrecking days of trying to get proper contact and get all the led's of the bar to light up i finally got everything to work and fit inside the QY. Also added a resistor before thebled bar. This whole step could have been done way better and cleaner but in the end it worked and thats all that matters for me rn.

I stuck the led bar and the diffusive plastic panel onto the QY's display protection glass with some tape. Then i put the lcd module back onto both to hold everything in place. There is some foam around the lcd to prevent dust from entering, but in my case also helps to keep the led bar and diffusive panel in place while also keeping a distance between the actual, unprotected display and the front light.

I guess this is very similar to the gba sp mod however the biggest difference is that it's the cheapest option while also being the least risky one.. the price of the raspi touchscreen to salvage the screen light from is only ~18€. Link below...

So I learned a lot from this lil project and i'm happy with the outcome. In the process i seemed to have scratched the diffusive plastic panel of the tft a little bit but i can easily swap it out in the future.. right now it doesn't bother me at all, i can finally use my QY100 as it is meant to be :)

Let me know what you think about this new method!

Nice job¡ Looks fantastic.
?
I¡¯ve done the EL panel replacement and it is tricky and does risk breaking your LCD but it is extremely evenly, bright¡?

yours looks fantastic as well¡?

Welcome to the group!

Nice work!

Do you have any pics of the the disassembled display or any pics of the mod from the inside?? I'm trying to imagine what the components look like and how you may have wired it.?

I have made 2 attempts to frontlight my QY100 using GBA frontlight kits (ebay/aliexpress) and both of them had significant defects and keeping dust out was basically impossible, so I'm looking for another method.

The link you posted isn't working for me, but I found this one which appears to be the same thing:

I wonder if this one would work:

Hey man, I don¡¯t know which person you were asking that question too¡ The OP or me regarding my EL panel mod¡
?
But in any case, as for the screen, it¡¯s probably way too thick to fit inside the QY100¡. Actually, the QY70 and the QY100 use the same screen¡ Just one has a longer cable than the other.

A good write up of the EL Panel backlight Mod can be found here: ? ??
?
Hope that helps,
Eric

Thanks Eric,

I wanted to get some clarification from the OP, but he hasn't been back.

I'm well aware of your EL panel mod and it's probably what I'm going to end up doing to mine.

it would be great if something cheap from aliexpress could be adapted somehow :o)
OLED QY with low power draw.

main problem of course is the batteries don't last anyway (so it needs a powerbank).

( ? would yamaha ever do a modern QY ? ....
imagine the whole thing on a compact aira size pcb with a usb-chargeable (replaceable) battery, just charge it up via usb, transfer all your stuff via usb .. )

(and cheaper to produce now if they just repackage the same sort of thing, with bigger audience, and (enhanced operation and features) )

Hey all! Sorry for being inactive i was pretty busy and also had to redo the mod. I will try to update my post with more info and more pics asap!

Thanks a lot @Eric!
I can def see the pro's for the el mod because its more like an actual backlit lcd, i'd love to see a side by side comparison of both mods in action..

@QY6000000

Thanks for the info regarding the link, you are correct that is the exact same model, however i believe most of these tft lcds will work as long as they are in the correct size, like the one from your aliexpress link. The only difference might be the brightness of the screen or the number of leds in the side bar but chances are they are identical. I'd say go for the cheap one and try it out. The led bar is a little thicker than the led bar of a GBA frontlight kit but still fits perfectly under the foam of the QY lcd module.

I actually had to redo my mod because i blew the led bar when i was searching for a better spot to solder the leds to, bc I noticed that the resistor i added between power and the leds was getting really hot when i used the QY, gladly my neighbour had some Arduino parts laying around he didnt need and also happened to have a arduino uno touchdisplay shield that looks a lot like the raspberry pi lcd! Opened it up and it had the same led bar inside, the same polarizing filters and the same tricky tiny flex ribbon cable i ruined the first time.. this time wiring the leds ribbon cable to the qy worked on the first try as i knew where to cut the flex cable and how to expose the copper beneath the flex cable to attach my + and - wires to.. for the power source i decided to solder the led bar directly to the 3.3v power regulator on the pcb. I did not add a resistor this time because the leds wouldnt be bright enough.. and i havent had any problems ever since.. the heat problem is gone too, now the QY will only start to get a liiiittle warm after like 2 hours of use, which was the same case if i recall correctly, before i added the front light. But yeah all this will make more sense when i added the pics, will update my post for you guys asap!

Wish you all a creative weekend!?

Thanks for chiming in HYPNOTIC.

Sounds like you've made some good progress with this mod.? I'll get one of the cheap aliexpress displays and see what I find.? I did a fair amount of experimentation with and without resistors using the GBA frontlight.? I don't remember the deatails (CRS!) but If you go through this thread you'll probably find some info if you're interested.? Looking forward to your pics.

QYedit,

I agree, it would be great to see a new/updated QY.? Given the success of things like the Teenage Engineering OP-1 it appears there is a market for it.? Given the advancements in tech over the last 20 years it would be amazing to see what they could do now.
