Yamaha XG Effects

Lately, I've been playing around a lot with the effects and under-the-hood Sysex parameters. I wanted to see how far I could push them using delays and distortion.

I was able to tweak the settings so I had 5+ delays (isolating the predelays/delays/feedback delays for all three slots, and minimizing parameter effects). Working on some comb filtering and physical modeling/resonator effects.

Re: distortions, I was able to overdrive the internal blocks and color the grit using effect send routing, the hidden EQ settings, and return levels. Also possible to overdrive the mixer internally, and even the hardware audio out. With careful gain staging, this opens up many possibilities.

XG's thoughtful specs afford a surprising degree of sound design/synthesis control when thinking laterally! Anyone else using the QY's this way?

Will post more findings as they come.

Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?

I usually don't play with the existing styles, but this thread motivated me to mess with them a bit. I'm impressed by just how much you can warp them into something completely different with the groove templates, drum voice replacement, and chord progressions.

Fantastic!!

I'll be checking these out for sure!

Thank you Nikola.

Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?

From Johannes Emmerling's amazing qy70 faq:

Q: Haven't I heard that Style before?
Kory suggested that these bits are ripped off:
?
Style # Style Name Stolen From Song
7 ? ? ? ? DrmnBas3 Prodigy Smack My Bitch Up
17? ? Hip Hop? TLC Waterfalls
21? ? Rap Coolio Gangsta's Paradise
26? ? DscFunk2 Wild Cherry Play That Funky Music White Boy

31? ? 8btRock2 Sherryl Crow If It Makes You Happy

32? ? CollgeRk Hootie & the Blowfish Only Wanna be With You
?
35? ? ProgreRk Boston More Than a Feeling
39? ? Britpop? ? Oasis Don't Look Back in Anger
42? ? HardRock Deep Purple Highway Star
43? ? 16btHard Heart Barracuda
48? ? HvyMetal Metallica Enter Sandman
49? ? MtlBoogy Van Halen Hot For Teacher
62? ? AOR Pop Michael McDonald What a Fool Believes

85? ? SurfRock Ventures (?) Pipeline (?)
87? ? CW Folk? Doobie Bros. Ol' Black Water
89? ? 16Country Doobie Bros. Listen to the Music?

I don't know how much crossover there is between qy70 and qy100 presets as i haven't had a qy100.

There's also one based on Oasis, "Don't Look Back in Anger," I think.

Looking at the mid-nineties Billboard hit charts might help here, lol.

Just thought I’d add a Translation (from Google Translate):

If there was no problem. The light is placed glued to the sides of the LCD screen to which I remove the metallic adhesive paper that it has from the factory and I use a sheet of acrylic or thin transparent PVC of 0.50 mm, I also paste it on the plate where it rests the glass of the lcd a rectangle of white paper that remains in the background, then follows the acrylic or pvc and finally the glass screen of the lcd. It is necessary to mark the edges of the lcd screen before disassembly so that the screen and characters can be seen correctly. I use two leds and power them with 3 volts from the main circuit. This is for either the QY70 or the QY100. And for any other Yamaha, I did it on the RY8, on the Zoom RT223, etc.

Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?

There is definately a close resemblamce to Prodigy - Smack my Bitch up on one of the D&B phrases/patterns
More the drums/groove than melody
But Im sure replacing one track with the acidpatch synth line would make it very noticeable

Thats a memory from 2002; ?this post just retrieved it :D

Thanks Kaltar, you've saved me from going down a futile path...

Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?

Nice tip - I'll have another sniff through the styles but noticing which phrase categories are used..

Interesting..

My method so far has been listening to the styles MAIN-A MAIN-B and then absent-mindedly wondering who it reminds me of..
Some are clearer than others of course. ?(yes, I mean YOU "Liverpol")?

Re: Hi everyone, new QY-70 owner with a "pattern" question

Step 6 should read: "pull down all the volume sliders"

Re: Hi everyone, new QY-70 owner with a "pattern" question

Wow, that’s really cool about the 24 part synth concept…

Thanks for all of the excellent information!

My pleasure! There are all sorts of nooks and crannies and tricks under the hood. For example:

1) Set a pattern to a length of 1 bar in 4/4 time 2) Enter a note of the same pitch on each track, shifted by an eighth note each time you increment the track (i.e. the first drum track has a note on 1:1:000, the second on 1:1:240, third on 1:2:000, etc) 3) Insert a maximum pitchbend message at the start of each track 4) Set all the tracks to the same type of voice (I like the single element sine wave) 5) Set the pitchbend range to '0' for each voice (can do graphically on the voice edit page...it's the tall vertical slider on the lower left) 6) Pull down all the sliders to 0

Congrats, you've made a realtime parameter tweakable step sequencer. Each voice will sound on each eighth note in turn, so by raising the volume on one of the tracks, you are activating that 'step'. And you can tweak the tone played on each step by messing with the voice parameters in realtime.

To change the pitch of a step, select its track and change the pitchbend sensitivity. Because of the max pitchbend message, adding or reducing sensitivity makes the sound increase or decrease, in intervals of a minor second (half step).

That 'Sound On Sound' series suggests a similar thing, but without pitchable steps, iirc. It's presented using different voices for use as a monophonic percussion sequencer.

If you want 16 steps, do the same thing in Song mode, just copy the bar a zillion times and it will simulate looping. If you get comfortable with the Sysex and controlling multiple parts with one track, you can get up to 24 steps (although the last 8 wouldn't be graphically editable).

Hi Rocky,

that lamp is unusable. I did considered it before I built mine (details in the photos section). It does not illuminate enough to light a screen.

So I've never had one of these to try, and have not read of anyone else using one so far..
If available anywhere, it might be a reasonable alternative to the open heart surgery of a backlight modification.

Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?

The list book tags any phrase in a phrase category ending in 'b' as "specific." So for example, 'Db', 'Bb', etc. I think that indicates it was based on an existing song. And anything ending in 'a' is more generic.

Haven't verified this thoroughly, but that's my understanding, which would mean styles that use phrases in the "specific" categories would be the ones based on real songs.

If I'm correct in my understanding, that would narrow down which styles to scan when trying to match them to songs on which they're based.
