Re: Yamaha XG Effects
I think that may be more of an issue with generating controller data. Have you heard the demos Yamaha made in house? They were able to program some surprisingly convincing guitar solos, but there is a lot of bespoke parameter twiddling under the hood, I believe. |

Will do.

Re: Data Filer for modern Macs? (Monterrey etc)
开云体育Although the subject of the PPC emulation is a little off topic for this group, I for one will be interested in your efforts. I keep an old G4 alive just for an occasional need, so I was not highly motivated (also lazy) to investigate the emulation route. ?If I could duplicate that function with an emulator, I would probably dump the old hardware. Keep us posted on any progress.

Hi Trail Boss, thanks for the suggestion.
I looked into it and am now experimenting with open source emulator UTM with a preconfigured VM for Mac OS 9? It boots up nicely, so I just have to attach some disks and figure out how to get MIDI working in OS 9 Cheers, Rocky |
Re: Yamaha XG Effects
@juhbuba Very interesting. I picked up a QY100 last week, Had one many years ago but realized that I never pushed it’s potential. Once I started to peruse the styles, I fell in love with the QY100 all over again. That said, I have always felt that the guitars, especially with distortion, definitely lack. I’m very interested in your findings. Cheers, |
Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?
Blake- I started with the QY70 myself before “graduating” to the QY100. I tend to agree with you that the 70’s patterns in general were better. That being said, the beauty of both units is that you can cut and paste any pattern or snippet, cross pollinate styles, and create something wholly other. It’s a never-ending smorgasbord…

Re: Yamaha XG Effects
Thanks for the offer! I rigged up something similar in principle using Logic's environment and had a Peavey control surface for a while. It was satisfying to be that thorough, but I didn't actually use it for making music. These days, I don't use realtime controllers. I prefer to shape the sound in by piping audio into my modular and modulating it there. Sometimes, I also use a CV -> MIDI controller box. For me, personally, that's more efficient, inspiring, and fun. But that's just me! I am, however, happy to get under the hood with static parameters in the list editor when isolating aspects of the effects algorithms like the embedded delays. It's a lot of trial and error, but the precision is useful for things like comb filtering and resonators, where slight value changes make or break the effect. |

开云体育Google PPC emulators for mac. I haven’t installed one myself, but there seems to be plenty of options available.

开云体育It would be nice to make an app that would take the place of the data filer.?I’m going to assume it’s possible with sysEx but maybe not completely.

Re: Data Filer for modern Macs? (Monterrey etc)
开云体育Considering that you can probably pick up a power PC Apple (laptop hopefully) for probably under $25 (total guess) on eBay it might be worth going that route just to have a back up solution… Totally clunky and outdated I know, but it’s something.["The longest journey starts with the first step."?- Lao Tzu] On Oct 26, 2022, at 2:22 PM, Rocky via groups.io <Wsbsub@...> wrote:

Re: Yamaha XG Effects
开云体育Jonah,I have done quite a bit as far as unlocking or making accessible pretty much all of the parameters of the QY 70/QY100… But it requires a Novation Remote SL MKII… either the 25, 37, 48 or 60 key versions. It’s basically a remap of all of the controls many times over to access all parameters of the 24 QY tracks (meaning song and pattern simultaneously wherever possible) including all the parameters of the variation effects, chorus, reverb, pan, LFO, Res, ADSR, volume, etc, etc… if you look up the Novation Remote SL MK II you’ll notice that it has a lot of knobs sliders and buttons… My template is 17 pages long with a (button driven) built-in navigation…so that’s about 17 times all those buttons knobs and controllers at your fingertips (with features of the novation, such as spilt keyboard added into the mix)… I think I covered just about everything including some experimental stuff like multi-track instrument integration and combinations. The dual 140+ character LCDs made this possible on the novwtion without being incredibly cryptic… Which is why I selected that for creating it… The only problem is their pc window system for making these types of templates is a bit buggy and has some serious bugs that I needed to work around so it took quite a while to get it to its current state… though you don’t need it to use it, it’s standalone on the device. I have always planned to make a video showing off how to use it before releasing it, however, if you were interested in giving it a try I would be very interested in the feedback. Re: Data Filer for modern Macs? (Monterrey etc)
开云体育Do macs have any type of PowerPC emulation mode? ?Seems odd if they don’t, but then again Apple is not a huge believer of backward compatibility… they are more of the “Just buy new hardware/software” mindset. ?? One of the very few things I dislike about Apple. ["The longest journey starts with the first step."?- Lao Tzu] On Oct 26, 2022, at 1:35 PM, Fernando Carello <fcarello@...> wrote:

Re: Data Filer for modern Macs? (Monterrey etc)
Hello,
unfortunately the Data Filer for Mac was created for the Macs of that time, which were using PowerPC processors. So the binary format and CPU instructions are not compatible with a modern Mac. I don't think Yamaha ever updated the Data Filer for modern Macs. On Wed, Oct 26, 2022 at 7:13 PM Rocky via groups.io <Wsbsub@...> wrote:

Data Filer for modern Macs? (Monterrey etc)
Rocky
Hi - I'm able to use the Data Filer under Windows 10, but my PC is not my computer of choice, so I wanted to try and get the Data Filer running on my Mac (under Monterrey).
The file attached on this site looked promising: QY DataFiler for MACOSX.zip???Report File? QY DataFiler for MACOSX But unfortunately, when opened that disk images generate the message "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer."
Does anyone have access to or knowledge of a file that will load in Monterey? ?
Also, is there an archive anywhere of the Q1P preset pattern files for the QY70??
I'm interested in getting some of the missing presets onto my QY100.
Cheers, Rocky |
Re: Preset styles and what they are based on?
Rocky
Hey - thanks for that - I'll look into the Play Effects -> Swing as the QY100 doesn't have Groove Templates. I'll assume for now that it is the same or similar effect.
The Drum Table Remapping is something I haven't played with yet too... Do you know if those Play Effects can be applied to the Accompaniment Parts? The manual only mentions the sequencer tracks. |
