Thanks for your message. This group can use some more activity :-)

Have you checked https://yamahadx9.com

Very interesting website for any DX9 owner!

I have to admit - back in the day when I had a DX21, during the 80s, I went over a work colleagues home as he had told me that he had a DX9 in the living room.? I was intrigued.? I think I probably laughed until he told me it was 16 note polyphonic and has access to all of the fine tune ratios that the DX21 didn't ( boo !!!! ).? ? Wasn't until March 2020 that I got one for myself and am pleasantly surprised.? ?Since then I have been making my own patches and modifying those that load from mk1 DX7 patches.? The DX9 shares a similar engine to the original DX7.? I have some videos that demo the DX9 sounds through a behringer foot pedal.? The videos show my laptop desktop which has a Reaper spectrum analyser running.? The videos have been posted to youtube but they are also on a google drive share along with the sysex.? If any of you want to audition the sysex it will work on a DX9 and probably on an original DX7.?

If anyone has any amazing DX7 mk1 patches they would like to share with me, I wouldn't mind having a bash at seeing how they load on the DX9.? I have noticed that very few of the public domain sysex loads on the DX9.? Probably as they use parameters like fixed ratios that the DX9 can't work out perhaps???

Hi Bob,

take care with switching power supplies : many of them do not work properly when they are not connected to a load. In some extreme cases, the power supply can even be damaged as it can not regulate properly (the output capacitors can be charged over their voltage limit)

So if you want to test the power supply without connecting it to the synth main board, the best thing to do is to put a dummy load on the main output (+5V in most cases). Loading the power supply at 25 or 30% is enough most of the time to allow the regulation to operate properly (so if the power supply can deliver 1A on 5V for example, adding a 22 ohms/2W resistor is enough to load the power supply. Take care however : such a resistor becomes really hot !)

Ive pulled all the Transistors and put them in a Tester and they all read ok
Question, Does there need to be a load on the 5V line before the switching takes effect or Do I need to look further?

You could take a look for leakage or swelling on those if you like. I've never personally needed to replace those.

Anything that is suspect on the PSU should be changed. I've had a couple of small signal resistors and ceramic caps on the PSU that were eaten away. You might not know until you start the removal and cleaning of the PSU.

Re: TX802 power supply issues

Bad filter caps may explain what you described so replacing them makes sense. I would leave the power resistors alone.

I have some issues with my 802, Some times it would boot and some times
I got a initial boot screen and then it would dim.? After a power cycle
it would work. However, two weeks ago it wouldn't pass the boot screen.

The circuit diagram gives +5 and +15 however my power board gave 4.6 and
14.3. After tweaking the pot Im now back up to 5/15V however, this took
quite a turn.

So This brings on a question why did the voltage drop is it bad caps?
and how long can I use this before it start failing again and I need a
tweak to Max...

So I recon i have to recap the power supply and replace the large 1W
power resistors. Any other pointers?

Re: TX802 power supply issues

Hi,

I had a similar issue and replaced all of the electrolytics on the power supply board, which solved the problem.

Not sure where this response is going to end up, but ... I have seen a lot of Yamaha 80's era stuff dying recently. In all cases so far it's the switching power supply they use. In the luck cases I just replaced all the electrolytics and cleaned the brown glue off the board. In worse cases I had to replace other passives. In the worst case there were other parts I could not find and had to make a wholesale replacement of the power supply. Since yours is working, I would suggest replacing all the electrolytics in the power supply. It's inexpensive parts-wise (like, under $20USD). These supplies are switch mode and they run very hot typically. I am NOT a pro-recap person in the least, but in some cases it is required. So far I think I've done a REV7, two SPX90's and a DX7S. I can't remember if there are others or not.

Re: DX7ii-FD, SysEx, and Computers.... JSynthLib

Hi all -
I posted about this a few years ago, failed to find what I was looking
for, and thought I'd come back to it after there were some new
developments. I'm not sure if there have been any new developments
though..

I used to have the original DX7 - I could copy the patches onto my
computer and I could design new patches on my computer and upload them
to the DX7, over MIDI, using Dexed.

Now, I've updated to the DX7-ii-FD and it seems that Dexed can't
handle DX7ii patches.

To make matters worse, I'm on Mac OSX - and it seems like a lot of the
SysEx editing software out there is for Windows.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could use to do this kind
of work now?

Geoff

Having looked further into the issue?with JSynthLib that you reported, it would seem that the legacy Java SE 6 runtime (Java for OS X 2017-001) is an absolute requirement on OS X 10.15.x. You can get that from

As Andy has previously mentioned: for this to work, the application bundle labeled version 1.0 from

must be used.

One more thing… in the Preferences window, ensure that the correct MIDI driver has been selected.

There you have it!

Yamaha TX816 Service Manual in HD

Good news everyone ! </farnsworth>

I've posted this into a different group but thought it could be useful to let all of you know about it since some of you might also got a TX along with your DX7 !

Many years ago, as I started my journey into this FM synths deep rabbit hole, I've been welcomed by friendly people from next to my home to the other side of the ocean and I got many helpful answers to my many questions.
Time passes and now it's time for me to give back to all of you and especially to Daniel Forró whom gave me precious tips and documentation to fix my TX816 back in the days.

Without further ado I have the honour of releasing a better quality (600x600dpi) scan of the TX816 service manual in full including it's oversize schematics ! I bought it on the web few months ago along some other rare Yamaha documents (that I intend to scan also) and it took me few hours of scanning and stitching (and few minutes of swearing also). I hope that it'll help anyone who have to fix or enhance this mighty Yamaha workhorse !

You'll find the link here: (as the schematics are 40MiB and the manual 125MiB I couldn't upload them here, feel free to copy/host them elsewhere)

This put an end to a quest I started 3 years ago to get a better quality PDF of this manual in order to facilitate my repairs on my TX, I'm happy that it ended.

I don't ask for any payback of course this is all free for you get !

<shameless plug>
I just want to add that to this day I've got a near complete TX516 with 3 missing modules to complete my TX816 so if you got working or defective TF1 units that you'll be ready to spare I'll be happy to talk with you about them ! I fix electronic consoles and music gear so dead units won't be a to much of a problem.
</shameless plug>

Anyway have a nice day and keep the spirit of the FM alive ! Long live Yamaha FM !

Jonas

Hi All,

Does anyone have a copy of the Tx802 Circuit diagram? I haev teh service
schedule but it only has the power supply.

I think I need a recap Over the past few months booting has been
steadily more unreliable I get partial boot then it freezes and re
powering the device gets it working, until last week I only get a
partial boot now and then a lock up.

So if you have a pdf of the 802 I would be grateful

If you would just adjust some of the group settings, like to accept html, it’d make this look like a new group.

And still cost zero.

Hi group !

I just got an email that this group is 'downgraded' to free level.
This means at least that there are no costs involved keeping this group alive (yay !)

What it means wrt (extra) functionality remains to be seen but we still got enough storage space so that's no problem for now.

This is from the email :

As a reminder, here are some of the benefits of the Premium plan:

?

·???????? Ability to directly add people to your group

·???????? Expanded storage space

·???????? Ability to accept donations

·???????? Premium support

If you find something changed or isn't working (anymore) pls. let me know.
We can then discuss if it's important enough to start a funding action or not.
