Hi all, I added photos of my setup in Mauritius, 3B8 from February 2006. The antenna was a "Spiderbeam"-fiberglass pole, 12m tall, fixed at an old construction. The radial system consisted of about 8 wires, 5 to 15m long. The antenna wire was about 11m long, fixed at the top of the pole and ran down to the tuner. The FC-40 tuned well on 40m, 20m and up, but no 160m, 80m and 30m. Signals reports on 40m were quite well from around the globe. I had 800 QSOs in 10 days during the 1-2 hour evening openings on 40m. Hi All ! It was my fault, there was one bad connection. I did new tests to day, here are the results: 1842 kHz OK 1873 kHZ OK 3520 kHZ +++++ 3785 kHz +++++ 7003 kHz OK 7098 kHz ++ 10116 kHz ++ 14030 kHz ++ 14330 kHz ++ 18079 kHZ NOT 18100 kHz NOT 21030 kHz OK 21370 kHZ OK 24945 kHz ++ 28510 kHz ++ 50000 kHz OK OK means some SWR but very low +++++ means perfectly matching ++ means good matching Only 18 MHz was not working. Wire is abt 23 m long and from the FC40 wire is goeing first 4 meters straight up and rest of it horisontally up to 10 meters at the end. I will take it down next weekend and measure it carefully.. Grounding as I told earlier is not very good: there is 20 meter loop 35 sqmm copper abt 10 to 30 cm deep in the ground and in this summer I added 3 m long groundig rod abt 45 degrees angle and some other copper wires. Not yet counterpoises , that will come later. I have never used that 18 MHz band, but because it is not working I have to try something for it ... 73s es GL DX de rami oh6bi

Hi All In June I wrote here abt 23m long wire testings, I got some good results. Last weekend I did new tests and started with 24,5 m long wire, running tests all bands (160 to 10m), then shortening abt 20 cm and running tests again. I did that abt 10 times so long that length 22m length was reached. I was wery surprised: antenna or tuner didnt work as it was working earlier! I got match only with 18, 21 and 10 m bands, not at all with lower bands. FC40 telling just HSWR... I checked all connections, grounding etc and they where OK. Is it possible that FC40 needs the Reset from internal DIP switch. Anyone done that ? 73s de rami, oh6bi

Hi All ! During last month I have done many tests with FC40 / FT897 and different lengths of wires: abt 8m, 12m, 15m, 40m ... Some has been working with several bands, some not. Last weekend I tried 23 meter length. Unfortunately I chosed wrong tree , it was too close and I had to shorten wire length 1m and the wire game abt 22 m long. It was working nicely from 160 to 10 m , including WARC bands. Only problem was 7 MHz, wire was too near 40m half vawe. I desided to shorten the wire 1,5 meters : That was wrong - I lost also 160 and 20 meter bands !!! Coming weekend I have to find another tree to get out 23m wire I wanted ( or maybe a bit more ), I believe now I have found the length suitable for me. If I dont get the full coverage wit 23m wire, then I will just add one separate wire for 7 MHz.. I have had good experience with IC AH3 and abt 22m wire earlier. 73s de rami, oh6bi

i purchased a new FT-897D and FC-40 a month or so ago. Played with long wires, verticals etc and had no contacts on HF while using the FC-40. Read the manual and followed the directions. Can't even reach a fellow ham 20 miles away on HF. The FT-897 works great on 2M & 70 cm. Having doubts about buying the FC-40 (and even the FT-897). Has anyone else had difficulties in initially setting up their FC-40? eptfnj

Hi all, Finally I got my boat on the sea and I was able to start testing FC40 at my summer cottage, Cottage is in island and there I have quite good possibilities to test different wire antennas. Radio is FT897. Feedpoint abt 2m from ground, FC40 on cottage wall. Grounding was not very good, it was connected to cottage electrical earthing loop with 2,5 sqmm 5m long cabel. first wire was abt 40m (132 ft ) (vertical part abt 8 m, rest horisontal position ) 160m OK 80m NOT 40m OK 30m OK 20m OK 15m OK 10m some areas OK second wire was 8m (26 ft), mostly vertical 160m NOT 80m NOT 40m OK 30m OK 20m OK 15m OK, not perfect 10m some areas OK third wire was 12,5 m (41 ft ), mostly vertical 160m NOT 80m OK, not perfect 40m OK 30m OK 20m OK 15m OK 10m some areas OK I just made tuning testing, only one qso. Has anyone tried to get these two to work together or opinions? I know the FT-817 has insufficient drive (I have a 100W amp), power could be supplied by an adapter of some sort in the band data circuit and the TUNE function by an external switch or possibly the W4RT OTT. Hi to the group, I am at present thinking of purchasing an ft897d plus the fc40 atu can you tell me if it is possible to run the fc40 and at the same time be able to take a feed to my pc from the cat interface for frequency readout etc for my logging and digital mode programs ,or is there an adapter cable available that will let me feed both . If I want to setup my FC-40 to play 80 meter band, how long should I prepare for the wire (good reception). And what's the awg should I have to use for.

1. I'm going to mount an FC-40 on my 40' so will need a long control cable-- any helpful suggestions? 2. I'm hoping to use an SCS PactorIII TNC with my Yaesu 857D-- any suggestions on using this TNC and FC-40 at the same time? Thanks!

I would be surprised if you would make it on the HF bands to someone just 20 miles away ! Try the lower bands where there is plenty of groundwave, 160m is ideal ! The FC40 is a good little ATU, but do remember that for best results keep the wire on the GROUND side longer than that on the ANTENNA side ! Have fun ! Mike. F5VKM http://www.f5vkm.com

Have you thought about trying a vertical loop antenna at all ? I have been having great success with vertical loop antennas with my SGC Auto ATU, which is basically the same as the FC40. I've got pictures, diagrams and dimensions on my website, http://www.f5vkm.com To date I have found that the loop antennas are the best performers with the auto ATU. The problem I have found with end-fed antennas is corrosion on the ground system connections during the winter months which degrades the performance of the antenna drastically, however with a loop there is no ground to worry about ... I purchased this tuner on promotion last year and strung up @100 foot of wire and I have encountered the issues, although not all that bad, regarding the tuner not tuning all bands with any one length of wire. Additionally, the rf ground I am currently running consists of simply a ground rod driven into the earth. The earth in my area (300 tards from the beach and Atlantic Ocean)is sand with salt water approx 3-4ft down depending on the tide. A multi radial RF ground is difficult to achieve in my area due to lot coverage of my house and concrete. I suspect that since my setup is not optimum from an rf ground perspective that I might benefit from an alternative antenna such as a dipole or loop. I have heard that the tuner is quite flexible and will work with certain loops and dipoles. I also suspect that if the match is close enough that the antenna might tune all bands with the proper dipole type antenna as well and I can avoid the use of a matching transformer. Under the circumstances what would be the best alternative antennas (known to work well and tune all bands) to consider with my location being close to saltwater and not likely having an optimum rf ground easily available? Hi Group, I am being forced out of my nice 2nd floor shack by a family member who needs the radio room to turn back into a bedroom. I will soon be operating from my old home in the basement. Has anyone had any luck operating a FC 40 from a distance of greater than the 15 foot control cable supplied with the fc 40. The FC 40 will now be approx 20-30 feet from the radio depending on how neat the feedlines will be. Any suggestions would be appreciated 73bob

Dear friends, I still own a 40 remote tuner since it is out on the market, but never used it under real conditions, just for a test. My mobile favorite is still the ATAS 120 and I use the Ft 857 / Atas combo often. Now I have the chance to go for a few days to the Mallorca island and can take my 897 (with installed psu) and the FC40 tuner. Any recommendation for the wire lenght? Dipol size? have no idea how the area will be,,, I know: everything longer then 10 feet.... but I can imagine that some of the group found and tested an optimum size of dipol. I haven't been doing much radio camping this summer yet; however, I am going to norther WI this weekend and hope to get some radio time in. Last year I used mostly a long wire >>1 ?. Unfortunately I didn't get much luck with 80/75m. I don't have a very good ground and running couterpoises in the woods has been flakey. I was wondering what other non-ground antenna conifgurations others have had success with (loops, dipoles, etc.). Thx, Jon AB1FF
