FC-40 disappointment

eptfnj

i purchased a new FT-897D and FC-40 a month or so ago.

Played with long wires, verticals etc and had no contacts on HF
while using the FC-40. Read the manual and followed the directions.
Can't even reach a fellow ham 20 miles away on HF.

The FT-897 works great on 2M & 70 cm.

Having doubts about buying the FC-40 (and even the FT-897).

Has anyone else had difficulties in initially setting up their FC-40?

I would encourage you to keep troubleshooting.? My identical setup worked perfectly, first time.? Post your experiences and observations, the group will help you make it work.

Everyone is raving about

?Size and kind of whip, please?
?
Attempts to use mine with wire antennas have been an exercise in fustration.? NOW they release that it will correct "up to a 3:1 mismatch" down to 2:1 or better -- not a lot of help when one is?trying to get a wire to tune from one end of the HF spectrum to the other.

Not reaching your neighbour 20 miles away on frequencies higher than 7
MHz is quite normal, you are simply too close.

What is your antenna and ground wire set up?
Does the tuner find an match?
Or do you get a "HISWR" indication on the display when you tune?

Remember you need some ground counterpoise for the tuner. Best is to
lay out some 5-10 wires on the ground, each about 5m long and/or
connect nearby metal pipes and structures, e.g. railings, lightning
grounds, whatever you find.

The FC-40 works perfect if set up properly with some 10m wire and a
good HF-ground. Used it on travel in 3B8, VK3, LA and had many
contacts around the globe.

I am also disappointed with the fc-40. I have a random wire loop that I was using with the
Icom AH-4. It would load up half of the 160m band and every HF band from 3.5 mhz to
30mhz. This setup worked great and I made lots of contacts with it on every band I tried it
on. The fc-40 with the exact same antenna will only tune 20m through 10m. I miss the AH-4.
I now wish I hadn't traded my Icom radio for a Yeasu ft-897. Nothing changed with the
antenna. I simply swapped out the Ah-4 and Ic-718 for the FC-40 and the 897. Maybe Its
not too late to send it back.

Hi,

Do you still have the AH-4 ? If so you can get a box that will allow you to use the FT897 with the AH-4. have a look at
