FC-40 Flexibility

I'm really struggling to settle on an antenna for my first HF rig.? I'm getting some good input on a related post in the FT-450D group.

?

This group may be better for some of my more specific questions.? From other posts in this group I think I've confirmed that the FC-40 can tune a loop by attaching one end to the antenna post and the other one to the grounding lug even though they aren't addressed in the documentation.? I'm starting with an attic installation and think I could probably string out about 40 meters of wire in the space I have.? What range of frequencies cold I potentially tune with that length of loop?

It also appears that a doublet on ladder line can be done in about the same way.

What about a conventional coax fed dipole?? Can that be tuned if attached to a balun?

The thing I like about these options is that I don't think I would need to deal with a ground connection like I would with a long wire antenna.

Thanks.

?

If you have not bought the FC40 look at the SG230. A way better tuner. I have found the FC40 to be temperamental wrt wire lengths.

I decided to go ahead and get the radio to see what could be accomplished with the internal ATU.? I installed a 2 band dipole (10M and 20M) and the radio will only autotune on those 2 bands so I'll still be searching.

Build a fan dipole (several parallel dipoles each for a specific band)

Then your internal tuner could tune that with ease

Autotuner like fc40, sgc (xxx), and some other can easy be used for tuning a
dipole, doublet or a loop.... but the tuner has to be "floating" rf wise

Means ... put a choke on the INPUT of the tuner and also choke(s) on the
power lines ... the tuner has to be isolated from ground if you wanna tune a
doublet or loop

I used my fc1000 that way (on fieldday setup etc) ... and a friend from me
uses an sgc tuner that way
