FC-40 & Raingutter Antenna

I was using raingutter antenna with my FT-897D and was able to pick up quite a lot of chatter on 20m, 40m and 80m. The gutter downspout was connected to my MFJ-898D tuner wire post and a set of 1/4 wavelength wires for 10m, 17m, 20m, 80m were connected to my tuner ground.

Today I connected the 12g insulated gutter wire to a new Yaesu FC-40 autotuner and ran a 12g insulated wire to a ground rod. The tuner cannot tune any band 6m-80m and I get HSWR on the FT-897D display.

At present, the FC-40 is mounted inside my garage and I am running the wires to the downspout and ground rod ?around the corner of the garage door together side-by-side. This was a quick-fix instead of drilling holes to the outside to bring the downspout wire and ground wire directly to the FC-40 posts. Both wires are side-by-side for about 4ft and the ground wire extend another 2ft to the ground rod.

I was surprised the FC-40 couldn't tune any band, as I was able to find numerous frequencies with SWR <3, between 2-3 and <2 with my MFJ-269 analyzer.

Any ideas?

I switched to 107ft and 85ft random wires and still wasn't having any luck. I switched out to a new controller cables, added a lot of Mix 31 ferrite rods, and added a second ground rod wired to AC service entry ground, I added a few more counterpoise without success - no go. The FT-897D just went into tuning mode for a second and then displayed HSWR.

I switch my FT-897D power supply from a FP-30B internal to a FP-1030A external, so I could go portable, and the FC-40 is now working from 6m - 40m. It takes a few seconds to tune, and only indicated HSWR on 80M and 160m, which is no surprise.Switching out between the FP-30B and FP-1030A again, I can confirm that the FC-40 works with the external but not the internal PS. Very odd...

Hmmm ... rf floating on coax braid towards the rig???

What antenna are you usin and what round system has the tuner to work
against?!?

Had similar trouble on filedday with my fc1000 (also an autotuner by yaesu)
... adding some (loner) radial wires at the tuner and all was fine

The tricky thing is the tuner has something to work against ... and
sometimes it is not only your round but also the coax and other wiring that
the tuner uses as the other half of the antenna

Next is length of the wire

If it is close to halfwave you have very high impedance and voltage at the
feedin point ... no good for the tuner

So ... sometimes a small chane in length does help for the tuner finding the
right match

The FC40 is an odd duck tuner. POS comes to mind. Mine now sits on my shelf reminding me how much I like my SGC 230.

Yeah - it stopped working again. I had disconnected it from my FT-897D and run a different antenna off a LDG-897Plus ATU for a week. Reconnecting, it fails to function. Full un-install, re-install, re-set DIPs, etc. And all bands HSWR - again.

I figured that, once it started working, that I'd hit on the magic combination of rubber chickens and wires that would stick. But no. I've never owned a more frustrating device.
