Re: FT847 FAN replacement ...

Hi Greg,?

there are two fans in the 847. The one on the rear panel runs continuously. The larger internal fan only becomes active in TX. Neither of them have any form of temperature control.

Most of the noise from the rear fan comes from the fact it blows air against a circuit board. If the fan is unscrewed from the radio, it becomes much quieter.?

One thing to note. The internal fan blows against the rear of front panel, and any dust tends to accumulate there. For the benefit of all owners, it is worth taking the cases off and? checking, and blowing any dust out. I have seen one with a 1/2" carpet of dust in front of the fan.?
?

Re: FT847 FAN replacement ...

As for my FT-847, I put a resistor in series with both fans to quiet them down. About 50 ohms if I remember right. Never had a problem and it's much quieter.

There was a discussion on the group about the fans quite some time ago. I saved the info - here are some of the notes: Perhaps you will find it useful.

A friend of mine found a slow speed fan that moves just about as much air but does it with much less noise. Specs are as follows:

Both fans size 40mm x 40mm.

Original fan: UC Fan; F412R-12MB-32; DC 12V; COPAL Co. LTD, Japan; Made in Malaysia; 5400 rpm; 0.06A; 1 ball bearing and one sleeve bearing; 0.15 cubic meter/min (5.3 cfm); noise 23 dB(A).

Replacement fan: Mini Kaze SY 124010L; 3500 rpm; 0.06A; sleeve bearings; 4.11 cfm; noise 14 dB(A). [Search for it on Amazon]

Installing the new fan involved only cutting off the plug supplied with the fan and splicing in the plug provided with the original fan.

I bought my fans from Amazon, but they seem pretty common for PC’s, so they may be available in your area locally too.

The big one or front is 60x60x25 (mm) 12 VDC and the rear one is 40x40x10 (mm) 12 VDC. They were about $10 each.
Be sure to look for 6 bladed fans with precision ball bearings. Also anything listed as “quiet” runs with a slower RPM and that is fine. I do lots of satellite work and have tested the rig running for days and my measurements with a digital thermometer indicated it maintained the ambient room temperature. For installation wiring, I pulled the sticker off the new and original fans and simply moved the radio’s wiring cable to the new fans, then re-applied the round sticker back on the fan.

Here’s some specs from one of the fans:
- Fan speed: Old: 5400 rpm; New: 3500 rpm
- Fan noise: Old: 23 dB; New: 14 dB
- Air flow rate: Old: 5.3 cfm; New: 4.11 cfm.

Hi Ravi, you are right about the serial number coding. Only, a number starting with a "4" is not older than one starting with an "8" as the production started in 1998 and "8" therefore was the first production year.
So, the sequence is (199)8,(199)9,(200)0,(200)1,(200)2,(200)3,(200)4 and finally the year 2005.

Maybe it is easier to first get the serial data working with a simple RS232 link to a normal PC running WSJT-X or something.
If that works, you can tackle the RigPi problem with more confidence.

Example: 8G051234 = 1998, May (fifth month, or "G"), Production Run 05, unit
#1234 in this run.

One key serial number range is 8G05. This seems to be the point at which
Yaesu had corrected the bi-directional CAT issue and made some other
improvements. This version was made in May 1998. Later serial numbers (e.g.,
8L09nnnn) all seem to have incorporated the earlier improvements plus new
ones...."

That would mean that the port was unidirectional prior to this, my
serial number is "4M950027", hence I was wondering what data is? that
the rig was sending back to the CommsTest program when tuning across a
band.

Thanks.

I know that this is an obvious question, but are you using a null modem cable to connect from the PC to radio?

I've been using my Ft-847 for 2-3 years with a null modem cable on HRD and have had no problems.

I let the computer boot up, turn on the radio, then open HRD. No problem.

Good luck.

the HF mod it self looks pretty simple??
since the rig has the AK emergency frequency in the firmware
I am supposing that it must have? the band pass filters in place to cover 60M??
or are we going to cook relays and the finals ?

I used the TC1001 adjustment several years ago.? No big deal once you find TC1001.? I my case I was off about 1700 hz on 432.? Got it alot close but without the dropper test equipment, can't say exactly.
Couple of hints.? Make sure the Ft847 is fully warned up as there is a slight drift from a cold start.? Can't remember exactly where the TC control is located but remember you remove the bottom cover to access.? Think it near the front, but not sure.?

60 Meter Transmit Mod Info Wanted

Hi folks, I just found this group and am a newbie to it.
I have owned an FT-847 since new from 1999 and would like to know how to open the transmit for 60 Meters. As you know, 60 M was unavailable for use back then unless you were authorized for MARS/CAP, but the FCC has opened up this 5 MHz band in 2003 or 2004 for amateur use per the band plan.
I have seen several mods that seem different from each other. Does anyone have a known reliable mod for a U.S. FT-847?
Thanks in advance,
Mark/AE1MS

Yes 250Hz are few but still too many ...

It doesn't seem that complicated with the right gear.
I have read about this solution on several sites, but before doing so I ask for more information.
