Sorry what shows 0.01? The 8 volt line?

Have you tried master reset? Bob. On Monday 7 April 2025 at 10:04:15 BST, Andrew Lenton <a@...> wrote:

Hi, I have an FT-847 that appears to have no TX or RX on any band or mode, but it transmits at much less than a watt. When I put an antenna on it, I could hear myself very low on another radio in my shack. Likewise, when I transmitted with the other radio, I could hear myself on the FT-847, but very low. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Re: Excessively low reception and transmission
Hi, if you find you need parts for the FT-847 like the AF-CNTL board I have them all.

First check the +5, and de +8 Volt lines, on J1004 of the AF-CNTL-UNIT.

? Anything connected to the ALC socket? If not, then check the socket to see if 0.1v is present on TX and that should rise to 0.6v on RX….. from memory.?

Re: Early model CAT question
It probably depends on what software (and what version of it) you're
using to drive the radio.? If you're using rigctl, there's a
separate radio model for the bi-directional and uni-directional
versions:
$ rigctl -l | grep 847
? 1001? Yaesu????????????????? FT-847?????????????????
20200509.0????? Stable????? RIG_MODEL_FT847
? 1038? Yaesu????????????????? FT-847UNI??????????????
20200509.0????? Stable????? RIG_MODEL_FT847UNI
So, the answer to your question is "yes".? Just don't expect to be
able to grab the VFO knob while tracking to make adjustments, since
the software will probably override it on the next real time update.

One of my buddies is selling his 847, but it's one of the
unidirectional models. Will I still be able to take advantage of
doppler tracking and digital modes with it? Or do either of
these require bi-directional CAT control? I'm not too
pressed about seeing the frequency on the screen, just about it
actually controlling the radio. Needless to say I've been
spoiled with USB CAT control with my 7300 for some time now.

Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
I tried it and it works. Just connect it and use the tune button on the 847.

Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
be interesting to know if anyone has actually tried an FC-40 (or the Mat-40 even) with an 847 successfully?

Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
Thanks Spence. That was absolutely great of you to spend your time explaining that you have come up with similar logic I was thinking, so everything should be okay as you say “it has the same socket “ and it is designed for the Yaesu Radio. So why shouldn’t
it work fingers crossed?

The FT847 has the same 8 pin connections for other tuners. FC10, FC20, FC30 and others. This is important for band switching.
I have all three tuners and tested them all and they all work well. ?
? Other tuners don’t have band switching or inhibit so effectively transmitting into a high SWR while the servos do their thing unless it’s a purely relay ATU (CG3000, SGC SG230 and some LDG tuners). When it comes to the FC20 the steppers initially
tune variable capacitors and switch in inductance. ?The FC10 is similar but the FC30 is more relay based. I like to think the FC20 as hybrid.?
? When you switch bands with the FC20 you see “wait” come up on the LCD while the capacitors tune. Again FC10 but from memory the “wait” only appears for a few seconds of at all on the FC30. These tuners are generally aesthetically similar to
the radio they are designed for eg: shape, size etc.
? I’m not sure about the FC40 as I never owned one but if it’s got a 8 pin tuner socket then I’m sure it would work.
? If you consider the FC10, FC20 and FC30 all tune on the SWR and all receive the tune start and stop sequence in cooperation with the radio. They inhibit the transmit. The only difference between the FT847 and FT897 is the label is “sense” and
the other label is “Band C” meaning change.
? This is just my observations and the fact I’ve owned or own the equipment.

There are 2 tuners that work with this radio. The FC-20 and the YT847. The YT847 is better in that it allows a PC connection for CAT control AND tuner funtionality. If you install the FC20, you will loose the ability to control the radio via CAT. Wither
of these appear on or ebail, but you have to be patient.
I see that one is currently listed on Swap.

Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
Just to give you a little further reading.
? Also note the socket on some radios is inverted. Pinouts remain the same.
FT847 and FC20 - reset pin to the bottom Inverted
FT897 and FC30 - Reset pin to the top - Normal
FT840 and FC10 - Reset pin to the top - Normal ?
