Thanks for your help, but if it were the potentiometer, why does
everything work fine on SSB? There must be something defective or
adjusted in the area Sqelch or AGC, or?

As a last ditch resort before replacing the pot, I have dismantled
them before and given them a clean. Generally the wiper either gets
corrosion on it or it's just general dirt buildup (use switch cleaner
or my preferred method of ipa). They are usually very easy to take
apart by bending a couple of clips that you can easily bend back
afterwards.
Good luck finding a replacement if you have to, as spare parts are now
very few and far between unless you buy used, which comes with its own
potential problems.
