FT-60R Battery Case Question
2
Dan and Group, I talked to a Yaesu person a few days ago about this subject. He added the same caution as the notes that come with the radio but also (off the record) told me that this is mainly for problems which might occur that Yasue does not want to get involved with. Things like law suits - I suppose! Most well designed battery's have a thermal cut-out device in series with the cells and will disconnect the cells if the current is excessive or the temperature of the cells is too great. Anyway, I carefully looked at the supplied battery and, if you look at it carefully, you will notice that the "end" AA cell - toward the bottom of the case, has the insulation removed from the bottom end of the cell. This makes a contact with the radio to charge the cells. If you want your rechargeable cells to charge with the supplied wall-wart, then just remove the insulation from the bottom of the cell that is in the bottom of the battery case. Presto the wall wart will now charge the cells you have placed in the battery case. BE ADVISED!!!! DO NOT DO THIS WITH ALKALINE CELLS AS THEY WILL EXPAND, AND EVEN CATCH FIRE. ALSO I'M NOT SURE AS TO THE CHARGE RATE BUT I WILL ASSUME THAT YOU CAN CHARGE THESE NEW "CHEAPIE" NiMH 2000+ mAH CELLS THAT ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE, SINCE THE SUPPLIED CELLS ARE RATED LOWER - AT 1400 mAH. Hope this helps, Tom - KI6O __________________________________________________________________________ FT-60@... When I purchased my FT-60, I also went for the FBA-25A AA battery case. I threw in some older Energizer AA Alkalines to try it out and that works fine. However, I was mildly surprised to read in the manual that users were cautioned not to use rechargeable batteries in this pack because it did not include the usual current and voltage limiting circuitry found in their own rechargeable packs. Now, I can understand the point of this admonition if all they mean is not to recharge such batteries in the radio using the supplied power supply. However, I can't see the risk in using batteries recharged outside the radio on a free standing recharger. Am I missing something about NiMH batteries here? Is there some risk in putting six previously Energizer NiMH 2100 mAh cells in the unit? I can't imagine why there should be, but Yaesu's directions seem pretty specific here. If the more technically savvy amongst us can enlighten me, I'd appreciate the help. While we are at it, is there a drop in charger for the supplied FNB-83 battery. I'm told that the CD-29B rapid battery charger is not yet available. Is there an aftermarket drop-in charger that allows the FNB-83 to be charged (relatively quickly) outside the radio unit itself? I seen it suggested in an e-ham review or two that the VX-150 accessories will work. Is that correct as respects charging the FNB-83? Dan - N7ZXL

Battery Charger

Why not use a Maha C777 plus charger for $59 from HRO. It charges the battery seperate from the radio and conditions it as well. I charge all of my packs on it and it works great. Batteries are charged in 2 hours or less and there is thermal protection for the batteries. Also there are expandabilty options in the charger and the ability to use it with a 12v power source. Hank

The RayOVac IC3 batteries AA are 2000 mAH NiMH fit in the FBA-25. Must be removed to charge in the 15 Minute IC Charger. The IC charger comes in 2 models. PS5 - charges 2 batteries at a time (total time 15 minutes), AA, AAA or the PS6 - 4 batteries and can be ordered with an optional cable to use charger in car (or other 12 volt source). The FBA-25 can be connected to the radio while external power is supplied. Batteries will not be charged (bypassed). So great for going from portable (walking, biking, swimming) to mobile. I outfitted all my gear with powerpoles and the power jack for the radio is radio shack 274-1532 - coax-style DC Power Plug 4.0mm O.D. 1.7mm Solder Terminals or if you just want ready made right angel plug with pigtail the get Radio Shack size "B". Want to run on external power at home. Found a $20 regulated supply MW122A. 2 AMP Regulated DC Power Supply (115 volt in), terminates with banana jack, made pigtail to powerpoles. Again, I plug it in with FBA-25 loaded with IC3. Keep mine bedside and run a couple of radios simultaneously. Got mine at a Hamfest from John http://www.qsradio.com/index.htm . Front switchable between 3-4.5-6-7.5-9-12 volts. Disclaimer; I don't work for John, just find him a knowledgeable and pleasant guy. And that may be a hamfest price! With supplied antenna I work Austrial (IRLP) bedside! Hi hi. In the shack powerpole it to my Astron to monitor my 706. Suggestion, if you want to hook it up to your shack antenna that terminates in PL259 get an sma to pigtail to PL259 female. (HS-05 NCG). Need a better antenna. MFJ 1717 (terminates in BNC) - Specs - 2/440 HIGH GAIN. Is it better? Should be!!!!!! Complaints for going portable with standard antenna - none. Fits in pants pocket with minimal injury to groin or belly and fits in swim bag for pool side QSOs. DO you want to use a headset? Get CT-44, plug headphones in to larger (standard) of the two jacks. What else!? Bring it on. What a versatile radio for $200. That's a couple of three grocery bills and fill ups at the pump. It ain't no 706! Yaesu FBA-25A Battery Case / Energizer 2300mah NiMH Batteries
Hello list, I want to share my recent experience with battery power for the FT-60. I recently purchased the FBA-25 Alkaline Battery case from the local HRO store and loaded it up with some 2300mah NiMH Energizer cells (12 for $26 @ the local Wal-Mart!). WOW is all I can say! They last FOREVER and I have now left the radio on for 24hours non-stop (transmitting maybe 5% of the time) and I still have plenty of power to spare. The batteries charge up very well in the FBA-25 case (although not recommended by Yaesu) on the MAHA C777-Plus II Charger/Conditioner (thermal protection) and read a capacity of over 2400mah after being cycled completely. I highly recommend this set-up to everyone as it provides lots more power and flexibility to the stock $65 1400mah pack. I also picked up a 12 pack of the Rayovac Max AA cells for under $5 – just in case! I will probably pick up one more battery case so that I can have 2 “assembled” packs at all times. So to sum it up: 12 NiMH 2300mah cells $26 12 Alkaline Cells $5 FBA-25A Battery Case $22 For a grand total of $53 (including tax) - $12 less than the stock packs retail price for 2 rechargeable packs and 2 alkaline spares. Can’t go wrong with that!! Sorry if this is repeat of any earlier posted info / results but I wanted to share my findings with the group. Hank Northern, VA

My ft-60 locked up, but got it fixed
This was originally posted on the other ft-60 group, and I thought the subscribers here might benefit from it. Please note: This is not an attack on Jim KC8UNJ's Commander software. I think Jim has done an excellent job in creating free programming software for yaesu radios, and only asks for a donation, way to go Jim. I just want other ft-60 owners that may have a radio with a similar serial number range to be careful. Also, I have no interest or connection to yaesu. I purchased a FT-60 serial # 4H010XXX and programmed it using KC8UNJ's commander software. I can't remember which set menu item I was, however, what I was doing was manually programming the memory groups since I couldn't do it from Jim's software, and I was adding memories to a bank and somehow, the radio had gotten into the set menu. So since I didn't want to take a chance in overwriting any memories or messing anything up, since I had 130 memories in it, I thought by turning off the radio, then back on, would get me back into a normal mode. That's when I turned the radio back on, the musical tone was heard, and the backlight came on, all normal, but the display was blank where I'm normally used to see the batt voltage, then reverting to a memory channel or vfo, basically, the radio was dead. A friend suggested I call Yaesu and ask for help since it was still under warranty. I got a real nice person on the other end named Michael who tried to walk me through the reset procedure which didn't work of course, then he suggested I bring it in. I got there 15 minutes before closing and showed him the problem, he gave it to their tech and within 15 more minutes later, he had brought it back to life and even with 80% of my memory channels intact!. I asked him how they fixed it, but they wouldn't answer that question. One of the first questions he asked me was "did you use a pirate software to program the radio", and I asked him why, and he said "there are pirate software versions out there which could potentially damage the radio". Because of this occurance, I am going to try the RT ADMS software. The radio was configured as follows: Modified per mods.dk web page, programmed with the kc8unq's commander software, S/N : 4H010XXX Purchased 9-27-04 Location: Los Angeles, Ca. 73

my $0.02
2
Hello all I thought I would throw in my $0.02. I acquired my FT-60R a couple weeks ago, at the time I bought it I also purchased a MH-C777+II. For those of you not familiar with this charger it is a universal battery charger-analyzer that will charge and analyze any battery 1.2-14V NiMh, NiC, Li-Ion, & Li-Po. Point being with a factory battery or battery case you cannot ask for more, If you want an idiot & bullet proof charger try this one out. Now on to my comment/ question, is anyone else having a problem with the rubber gasket that goes around the battery, the one on mine will not stay put (PITA) , I also changed the antenna for a comet SMA-24 and now I have the best portable I have ever had. As a parting note Thank You for supporting a free exchange of posts that are not groomed only to the thoughts of one, but serves the many. 73 De N7AZN BK Ferguson Glendale, AZ.

FT-60 Commander v0.0.6 BETA Released
4
FT-60 Commander v0.0.6 BETA Released Get it at my page: http://www.qsl.net/kc8unj/ What's New: -Added Key Assignments (FT-60 Settings Menu) -Added Home Memories (bottom of grid) -Added VFO "Memories" (bottom of grid) -Added a method of writing files from other radios with different hardware configuations. This is "Apply HW Config To Current File" in the Transfer menu. -Moved "Use Write Mode #2" to the Transfer Menu, now called "Use ALternate Write Mode" -Fixed a bug with TX Dev -Fixed a bug with split tone selections -Other minor adjustments If I have omitted any of the radio settings, please let me know, this should be about all of them. Once I have all of the radio settings programmed and nobody finds any bugs for a while, I'll jump the software up to version 1.0.0 and drop the BETA designation. Thanks to those of you who have provided bug reports and feedback, you know who you are. ---------------------------------- Special Note For Non-US Users ---------------------------------- The FT-60 is now available in countries other than the USA. FT-60 Commander should work OK for these radios. However, if the software detects a US machine, it will not allow programming memory channels frequencies that are blocked in US models. This has become a problem for some non-US users, such as non-us users using a US configuration on their PCs. If you are a non-US user who is using a US configuration on your PC, and you want to program "US blocked" frequencies into your memory channels via Commander, then you must go through the following process: 1. Go to the Control Panel 2. Click on Regional Settings 3. On the default screen, use the drop down menu to change the region from English (United States) to any other configuration, such as English (United Kingdom) etc. 4. Click OK/Apply. If prompted to reboot, click NO. Rebooting is not necessary, since you will be changing it back in a minute. 5. Launch FT-60 Commander. The software will detect a non-US configuration and will enable programming of the US-blocked frequencies to the memory channels, and will continue to do so even after the region is set back to US. 6. Go back into Regional Settings, and change the region back to English (United States) If you are a non-US user and you have your regional settings set to anything other than English(United States) then you should not have any problems, and you do not need to go through this process. In the USA, FCC laws govern the use of amateur radio equipment, and other nations have similar governing bodies that regulate the airwaves. It is your responsibility to know, understand, and obey the laws that effect you. THE AUTHOR OR CONTRIBUTORS OF FT-60 COMMANDER WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNLAWFUL MISUSE OF YOUR FT-60R!!! FT-60 Commander 0.0.7 BETA Released
FT-60 Commander 0.0.7 BETA Released -Fixed a bug with typing in the grid -Added INT CD CODE A-CODE F -Added code to prevent Memory #1 from being empty Not too many changes here, but the main reason is the third item down on the list: If memory channel #1 is empty, it could cause problems with the radio. **** So, don't use any of the older betas to write a file with memory #1 empty! *** In this beta, if memory channel #1 is empty, the software adds default data when the file is written. In other words, get this beta and then you don't have to worry about it! Thanks go to Bob Freeth (G4HFQ) for pointing out these latest bugs. Jim KC8UNJ

This is totally illegal as he is actually using your email address, without your permission maybe the FBI would like to know what he is up to, as I am sure thats illegal and considered electronic theft and misuse! Question about Bank scanning
6
Hi, I'm considering buying the FT-60R as a railroad scanner. This is after hearing many many rave reviews of the VX-150 being used for this purpose, and then learning about this new unit. It seems that the 60 is much more "scanner like" in that I will be able to choose a few specific memory channels to include in a bank and scan only them if I choose. Is that correct? Thanks in advance! Nick

Addition of Screw Driver Antenna supasses published sensitivity specifications of unit across all bands; cellular blocked.
Extensive frequency coverage is no longer a problem with my unit. I have adapted a newly developed screw driver like antenna to the sna connector. Integration between the screw driver and swr bridge metering circuit required a small modification to the firmware. I have contacted Yaesu and I am ready to transfer the patent to their corporation. In turn they have agreed to retrofit those units already in the field. New models will come with this as standard equipment. The drive mechanism is so fast that it keeps pace with the unit as it scans, even across band boundaries. More information will be available soon, as I am low on meds at this writing. 73 de KE2QR Fred Jacobowitz _._. _ _ ._ _.. . _._ . .._ _ _ _ _._ ._. http://www.qrz.com/callsign/http://www.qrz.com/callsign/KE2QR http://www.qrz.com/callsign/WS2SF THE MORSE CODE:When you rearrange the letters:HERE COME DOTS Instant Messenger: KE2QR

headphone question, and Adapter suggestion
6
is this a standard jack that I can plug any ol' set of headphone into, or is it a special size that I need to buy one of their accessories for? Also, I haven't seen it posted here but on the RailScan list I was pointed to a Ham selling a much better SMA-BNC adapter than you find with the radio. The rubber housing should support it and make it much more sturdy than the thin metal ones they sell with the radio. Just thought I'd pass this along since many people here will be using an adapter :) http://www.wa3hrl.com/smabnc/index.html

FT60 Adms software
Used the software for first time to transfer some memories to a new ft60. Memories transferred ok, but when I switched to VFO and manually entered a repeater frequency, the shift frequency was not able to be viewed upon pressing the rev button (although the negative shift icon was there and flashing). Additionally, when pushing the ptt the radio stayed on the receive frequency. Checked all menus items, auto repeater shift, split etc. and they seemed properly set in the software and in the radio. Any thoughts?

Crossband repeat
6
I was nosing about the e-ham.com review section last night and could have sworn I saw some directions from a member describing how he got his FT-60 to crossband repeat. I neglected to print out the material, but thought of doing so today. When I went back the message appeared to be gone. Was I hallucinating or was it expunged for a reason beyond my knowledge? Did anyone else see the message ... maybe it was posted elsewhere and I'm just confused as to its location. If someone has that information could they post it here or forward it to me directly?
