Re: newbie query..........what and why for all the features?

Phil, KC6OEI,

You're my spirit animal!? A double E in doubt..........I love it.? I'm only an M.D. struggling thru the same maze of baffling instructions but have accepted my position at the low end of the learning curve.? I can see that I'm gonna love this group both as a source of education and inspiration.

PS? Rick Sparber, author of the "Beginner's Guide to the FT-60R," commented separately that (paraphrasing), "Yeah, those guys know it all"

You’re not alone! After not using the radio for too long, I’m re-learning the simple operation of my FT-60R, discovering features I’ve never used (memory banks, alphanumeric memory labeling and subaudible tone detect) and wrestling with some of the instructions in the manual. I’ve even printed yet another copy of the manual because my original and prior printed copies ?are…around here, somewhere.

I call the Set options Set-and-Forget because there are so many. The manual is a must here because the abbreviations tell me nothing.

One incorrect button push will put the radio in the wrong mode for accomplishing what I’m trying to do. It’s because every button has three functions depending on press technique: momentary, press-and-hold and Function-button-first.

Putting programmed memories into banks seems awkward. There’s a lot of switching modes back and forth and dialing a bank and then a memory before I can store what I want, where I want. It feels to me like I’m doing everything twice.

As a degreed electrical engineer, I’m determined to master this thing without resorting to a programming cable and software. I’m smarter than a piece of technology!
