Battery Latch Too Tight?

Chris Smart

I don't have fingernails really, and I'm finding that little battery latch to be extremely hard to open.

I'm glad the tolerances are so tight with this radio generally, including the drop-in charger, but man, I have to use a dime or a thick guitar pick or similar object to open that battery latch.

Is there a trick to this I'm missing?

Other than that, I see what all the fuss is about with this classic. I ran nets for a couple hours on 2W last night and still had lots of battery left!

I’ve been using a knife blade for years. If there’s a trick, I’d love to know if!

Mostly, I don't want to force it unnecessarily and damage it at all.

Hmm, pocket knife is a good idea.

The battery latch is intentionally tight. There is a water seal around the perimeter of the battery that's designed to keep moisture and dust out of the radio. Without the tight latch, there would not be enough compression of the seal. It's a holdover from the basic LMR design of the radio where the radios would be recharged frequently on a desk charger and the battery would rarely need to be removed. It is not the most convenient design for users who have the AA pack or swap batteries frequently.

I squeeze the battery and radio firmly between a thumb and forefinger and the latch pops open with a flick of my other forefinger. It's secure and I don't need a tool or coin.

Well, I did pick up a second pack for this radio, but honestly, the first one lasts so long I may not use it often. ?

hmm ok, thanks Phil, I'll try that... just a little compression might do the trick.

Personally, I’d rather have it the way it is than to be loose and flimsy. This is just one of the features that makes the FT-60 that much better than some of the newer radios. It LOOKS old-school and it FEELS old-school, because it IS.?

OK, not as old-school as the old Icom O2, but you know what I mean.

Yep, lots of metal too.

I almost want to pick up a second one to just put away...

What's next, Motorola gear? ?

Forgot to mention that, but that’s what I meant about being “old-school”, back when radios had metal cases and felt solid, not like plastic “walkie-talkies” that we played with as kids.?

Oh, and I don’t like these little bitty tiny ones, either. Don’t get me started.
