I did a little more research and it's apparently a 2.5mm (not a 3.5mm) TRS cable between the microphone jacks on each radio.

As Clint points out, you may have the Deviation set to "Narrow" +/-2.5KHz instead of the default "Wide" +/-5KHz. See manual page 62.
The other possibility is the FT-60R Mic socket itself.

Let's simplify this. If purchased new from an authorized Heil and Yaesu dealer,
that Heil mini-boom single-sided headset work great. There is no widespread
problem with that combination of items.

NEITHER.
Icom is the brand usually supplying voltage to an electret element.
