From prior discussions on here, there are three levels of eneloops. If I recall correctly, the Pro level are too large to fit cleanly in the adapter. The other two should work OK. Very slight difference in diameters...

The clips on my two FT-60s can be closed when using those batteries, but
with a great deal of difficulty.

However, I have to use a coin or the tip of a large flat blade
screwdriver to get it open. Can't do it with my fingers.

Re: VX-3R versus FT-60R

As an FT-60R owner of less than a month, I'm interested in the discussion, especially the battery topic.

When I saw that my tired old Alinco and its NiCd batteries would not carry me through a two-day, ham-supported bicycle event?I chose the FT-60R based on HRO recommendation and also bought a spare FNB-83 NiMH battery.

I'm looking forward to many years of service and hope the NiMH batteries are more tolerant of disuse than the Alinco NiCds.

My only operational gripe about the FT-60R is that I cannot keyboard-lock the radio while it's in scan mode. For that reason, while the radio is scanning, it's also open to accidentally transmitting.

Actually, many of us are using NiMH batteries we have bought in AA cell size, the Eneloop brand from Panasonic (who, apparently, bought the brand from Sanyo). You would also need the FT-60 battery tray that holds six cells. It only takes a minute to remove the tray from the radio, empty it, insert new batteries, and reinstall the tray but, of course, you could buy a second tray if changeover time is critical for your use. When I sold my broken FT-60 to a ham for parts, the 8 year old battery pack
was still usable. At least half life still in it.

Re: VX-3R versus FT-60R

No, Vertex is not part of Yaesu.

Motorola owned Yaesu (which included Vertex and Standard Horizon) for
several years. However, at the beginning of 2012 they spun off Yaesu
(amateur & air band products) and Standard Horizon (marine radios) as a
separate company.

Motorola kept Vertex and operates them as a separate division.

The only relationship between Yaesu and Vertex today is that some
accessories work on each others older radios. Over time that
compatibility will likely become less.

Re: VX-3R versus FT-60R

Hello all and many thanks for the replies to date.

I'm hoping to borrow a VX-3E from a work colleague this evening to test against the UV-5R.?

Thanks for pointing out about band differences between EU and non EU models. The FT-60E covers 144->146. This would not allow me to hit repeaters in the VS (or at least Atlanta which is where I'm headed).

?The FT-60R (no EU model) covers 144->148. It's a similar story for 70cm. I'm allowed to own a FT-60R in Europe provided I don't transmit out of band (which I have no intention of doing so). There are also dealers here who sell the FT-60E and can modify it (with warranty still intact) to remove the band restriction. This would allow me to TX in de US as well. The price difference is about $30 more expensive than in the US. Possibly having a EU warranty is worth paying the extra money for the EU model with modification.

There R model also has automatic repeater split that obviously wouldn't be of use here in the Netherlands. Apart from that, I'm not aware of any major differences.

One thought I do have is that NiMH batteries are a bit "old school" compared to Li-Ion. How are you experiences with them? Do they hold a charge well or to they degrade noticeably after a year or two? And given that I'm in Atlanta with repeaters in the city center, I can reduce the TX power. Could someone provide a battery life estimate for lower power settings versus 5W please?

My thanks in advance to all who took/take the time to reply to my questions.

PD0HUN

I have two FT-60Rs and use them for satellites and local repeaters. Never had any problems with them in the four years I've had them.

Good point on the receiver - actually I have compared my FT-60R with my
Yaesu FT-2900 mobile rig and the FT-60r is less susceptible to intermod and
less impacted by strong local signals than the FT2900.

My first FT-60R blew a final after 8 years and I picked up a new one if that
tells you anything.? Just get an aftermarket antenna ...

FT-60 is ECONOMICAL considering its excellent quality. Xmit power 5 watts, sensitive receiver and all around good HT.? About 50 times better than the HT you've been using.? They are tough radios and will take a lot of physical abuse from drops, etc.? Although, drop it the wrong way and?the trauma?may bend or break-off the volume and/or tuning controls.
If you purchase after market Li ION battery, make certain you have the proper charger for that the battery chemistry.??
I've had an FT-60 for about 9 years, and purchased another one at this year's?Orlando Hamcation, so I would have a backup, just?in case I somehow?beat?the original?one to death or they?cease manufacturing?them.? I charged the battery and programmed the new one, then placed it back in the box.?
As someone else mentioned....be certain you are purchasing the model that will work on the ham bands in your country.
Enjoy your visit to the USA.
