Re: Ft60 problem

I sent my unit back to the factory to have an intermittent speaker problem repaired, and I also went over the squelch issue with them and asked them to look into it.? When I got the unit back, the speaker issue was fixed, but not the squelch issue.? I decided to wait a while before sending it back to see if it was interference, wifi, etc., but no matter where I use my unit, I end up putting the squelch to max to prevent the annoying static and noise I get on 70cm mostly, but also on 144.? It is so annoying that I now rarely use the FT-60 and instead use my Baofeng.? The mention of a varactor problem by KC0OEB?(after all this time) has peaked my interest, so I am going to send it back to Yaesu and see if they will try again to get this repaired.? Otherwise it is the junk heap, and I will try another brand HT.

I miss understood your post. You mean the battery is being discharged EXTREMELY QUICKLY IN SECONDS?

Is there a short? Is the battery old? Is the battery normal temperature? What are you using to charge the battery?

Hey Jerry

Before we panic, give the battery a full charge and try again. As you know the transmitter needs a certain voltage, like something more than 6.9V, to be delivered to it before it can function. Anything less and it will shut down.

Now losing memory settings, that is a different thing but, in a way, it also can be related to a low battery.

So let's get this battery juiced up and topped up and let's test again. It also could be a failing battery, so that should tell us.

Hello godly_mistle

Has your friend reported any progress on this issue We "I" are sitting on pins and needles to see what the culprit was.

Please don't keep us hanging. And I hope your friend enjoyed the trip to Spain, here in San Francisco, we have a huge community of paraglider, because we are open to winds from the ocean.

73, and please report back any news, positive or negative. We are all hear to learn, and this one stumped most of us so it is a good example to learn from.

? HI- Guess I'll have to answer this my self- Battery shows 8.2 off the charger and 7.4 after trying to tx- So,got the volt meter out and while checkinng on ht back ports, drops to 2.2 volts. Borrowed a battery to try and not sure how good the battery is,Now will tx fine buz. SGuess you can't believe what you see HI ,TKS, 73 Jerry W8KQ

Can only tx ,from right off the charger. Hour later,it says no freqs,or something like that. Not sure if it is simple ,or more involved. Had something like this happen to a ft2600,which was plugged into the lighter in the car, while car was off. 1 sec and the mems were gone. Reloaded off the computer, when I got home and was ok ?? Any thoughts ?? TKS,en73 ,Jerry W8KQ

"A friend of mine who is out in Spain paragliding"

Has your friend landed? I do not advise repairing a radio in flight ?

It sounds to me that maybe the keypad has gone bad? Do any of the keys function??

Can he use some instrument like a pencil to make sure the keys are being pressed and that they are making contact to the internal assembly?

What was he/she doing before/after this happened? It states that a factory reset did not clear the issue, but how about removing the battery and any power source for a while and see if any short clears it self.

I don't know what is really happening its a bizarre behavior to say the least, but maybe some capacitor is overloaded and malfunctioning?!

Ask and come back to us with theses answers. Oh and is this altitude related or is it happening on the ground to?

I experienced similar this AM on my FT-60 and noted that my speaker/mic was not “completely” plugged into the HT.

?

Being partially inserted, but not completed apparently locked the keypad and knobs down from being able to do anything.

?

I pushed the plug in and all is OK.

?

Maybe similar to your friend’s situation if using a speaker/mic or a earbud, etc., etc..

To all who suggested the keypad may be locked:

The original poster said his friend HAD DONE "A FULL FACTORY RESET." The
radio WILL NOT be locked after a full reset.

A friend of mine who is out in Spain paragliding is unable to change the
frequency on his FT60 he says the buttons and the knob have no affect,
after I gave him a few tips I then told him to do a full factory reset
which he says he did the frequency changed to the default but he still
can't operate the keys or the knob to change frequencies, any ideas?

Re: unable to change frequencies

He sent me a picture of the radio definitely not locked and on the default frequency from a reset. I did a reset on mine to compare and it matches except I have full control.?

I have a FT60 that has a squelch issue. it goes from all the way open to all the way closed at mid point (ie 12 o'clock). When it closes, it is like the squelch is all the way.
So far, I have done the following:
I have replaced both the control and, the board with the control/vol/selector. Looks like the rubber between the main board and daughter board is not working right. I have flipped it both vertical and horizontal(4 possibilities). It seems to make no difference. Yaesu tech support does not have the rubber cable anymore.
Any suggestions?
Otherwise I may look for a dead radio to get just for the cable.

Thanks to all who have responded here and offline.

?

Battery is flakey.? Vendor is replacing it under their one-year warranty.

?

Charging unit was purchased from the same vendor as the unit for charging the LI-ION batteries.

?

I just keep two charging units on my desk:? One for the original battery that came with the FT-60 and the new one for the LI-ION.

He said his friend had done a factory reset on the radio which would
clear the keypad/dial lock. In fact, can a reset even be done if the
keypad is locked? I don't know.
