Re: Transmission Problems
Hello Jacqui - KD2ARF,
I can't comment on your being able to hear stations from California, the Virgin Islands and Australia, except to say that you need some special propagation conditions (like tropospheric ducting or Sporadic E) for that to happen. It is is not something you can count on, and it won't happen very often. You can read a bit about that at the following website: In fact, I doubt you could hear stations as far away as Australia and California only due to favorable propagations conditions. I suspect you were listening to a repeater and the stations you heard were communicating on IRLP. See About the frequency switch between receiving and transmitting, you were listening to a repeater, and the difference you observed between the two frequencies is the repeater shift?(which is 5 MHz for UHF). See p. 19 of of your FT-60R Operating Manual ("Repeater Operation"). The fact that the other club member was not able to hear you, doesn't necessarily mean you were not transmitting. You mention the PL setting, that means you were using a repeater, and you may have had the repeater shift wrong (although it is automatic on the FT-60R unless you override that automatic feature). ?Why don't you and another club member agree to talk on a simplex frequency? No repeater shift and no PL to worry about, all you need to enter is the frequency. If you and your friend are line of sight and not too far away from each other, you should hear each other. If you are not heard, then you can ask about whether your antenna is connected correctly, etc. Good luck. Bernard - VA7BLR |

Re: Transmission Problems
Russ
Jacqui,
When you communicate point-to-point, you normally use simplex mode (you transmit and receive on the same frequency).? When you communicate via a repeater, you normally use duplex mode (transmit and receive on different frequencies; the difference is called the offset).? In busy areas, repeaters often require the use of a specific PL or CTCSS tone in order to activate the repeater so that distant stations won't inadvertently activate the repeater. Here's a link to an article about "how to use a repeater".? Pay particular attention to the section about "offset" and "PL or CTCSS Tone" for an explanation of the different settings that you need to use in order to communicate via the repeater. http://www.hamuniverse.com/repeater.html After you have determined the proper frequency, offset and PL or CTCSS tone to use to connect to your repeater, you should use Clint's one page "cheat sheet" for an explanation of how to configure your FT-60 with the appropriate settings. http://www.k6lcs.com Russ KI6MLU |

Ok, the frequency shift is normal. Look up as to how repeaters work. Get the correct repeater frequencies for your area. Program in the correct PL tones. That is about all there is to it. There is a "cheat sheet" around that gives a SIMPLE explanation of how to set up the radio.

From your description is sounds as though you ARE transmitting but you have programmed the FT transmit to an offset of + 5 MHz. The handbook is quite difficult to understand from scratch as there is a lot in it. Try something really simple like setting one of your channels to simplex, then do the test with your friend. I'm sure it will be transmitting.

Re: Transmission Problems
You are NOT hearing them direct - not are they hitting your local repeater. They are probably using Echolink or a VOIP service: Their local repeater is tied to the Internet, and so is your local repeater. Authorized users can punch in some DTMF codes locally, and have access to other systems across the planet. YES - with your FT-60, YOU, TOO, can work the world! Get to know your local club whose repeater you're accessing, attend a meeting, and you will learn all about it!... California, on from the Virgin Islands, and one from Australia. I am in New Jersey ... Clint, K6LCS 909-241-7666 |

Re: Transmission Problems
Your local repeaters probably require a TONE to access them - what you have done is turned SQUELCH/TONES OFF in both TX and RX.
So find out what the access tone is, and set SQUELCH TYPE back to TONE. Personally, I leave receive OPEN - so I do not accidentally step on a nearby repeater by accident. But by setting to TONE, you then need to go and set the TX TONE. And make sure the REPEATER OFFSET is set to the correct direction (either + or -) for your repeater. An easy, step-by-step ONE PAGE cheat sheet for you is in the DOCS page of my Web site at ... But it sounds like you are VERY CLOSE to mastering manually programming your FT-60R! Transmission Problems
Hello,
I am a new Ham and I am also new to the FT-60r. I have played around with it and had difficulty at first hearing stations, but got that fixed by going into the menu and turning the setting for the SQ TYP to OFF. Now I am getting signals better and hearing conversations and getting a better antenna helped. Now I am not able to transmit. I am not sure if there is an issue or something I accidentally programmed wrong. I tried it out with a member of my radio club and was not able to transmit. I set the PL setting to the correct number but I was still not able to have her hear me. I am really wanting to get this figured out because yesterday I was listening and I was actually able to hear 3 stations talking, one from California, on from the Virgin Islands, and one from Australia. I am in New Jersey. I have not done my first contact yet and I'd really like to. I was sad I couldn't jump onto the international stations I heard. Is it normal to be able to hear stations like that so far away? I just have a simple magnetic mounted MFG Dual band antenna. (it was about 3:45pm EST) I do note that when I press the PTT button the frequency will change from the one that I was listening to for example I may be listening in 441.7000 and the PTT will switch to 446.700. Hoping for help 73 Jacqui KD2ARF |

Attending ARRL SW Div Convention this Saturday?
If you are attending the ARRL SW Division Convention in Torrance this weekend ...
AND if you've been thinking of purchasing either an Elk 2M/440L5 Log Periodic, an Arrow 146/437-10WBP, or Premier AL-800 ... Then have I got a couple deals for you! In conjunction with Ham Radio Outlet - Anaheim, mention "K6LCS Sat Special" at the HRO booth at the show, and get a couple bucks off the show price on the AL-800 and/or the Arrow ... and an impressive price of $82.95 for the Elk! AND THERE'S MORE! Bring your receipt from the purchase of a Yaesu FT-60R that you purchased from the fine folks at the HRO booth on Saturday to me - and the first four who do so will be handed a Smiley 270A antenna! I will be at the show from 7:30AM to dinner time on Saturday. Find me working the sats from the parking structure at the times posted all over the event. Or see me right before, during, or after my satellite show in Suites 9-11 which begins at Noon. Go ahead and interrupt the session - I only have FOUR of these great antennas to give away! Re: Power Problem
Bill Boyer
The power plug is the same as the FT-817ND, IIRC. One of the issue we see is the little yellow ring at the end breaking off and getting lodged in the power jack, rendering it unusable. ? From the description of the problem, it sounds like the power Jack is bad.? There is a switch contact that opens up when the plug is inserted that re-directs power to charge the battery and power the radio. I would guess that the switch contact on the power jack is not making contact when the plus is removed from the radio.? I would think that it could be repaired fairly easily. I agree that you should call Yaesu and see what they say. |

Re: Power Problem
Probably you have a dead battery now. ?And that's why HAMs said they used a timer (setting to charge 5-10 minutes in every 30 minutes or an hour to prevent overcharging) to charge the battery whilst let the rig sitting on the charging cradle. Try borrow a battery and see if it will solve your problem. ?Then you know if it is a dead battery. Sent from Jo's?iPad On 2011Äê9ÔÂ3ÈÕ, at ÏÂÎç9:22, "Robert M" <kc6zzg@...> wrote:

Re: Power Problem
90% of the time the radio was run off the battery. I would hook it to the car charger when the battery voltage get to around 7 volts. Then after I felt it was sufficiently charged I would again run it off battery power. The Toyota Tundra I drive has two extra cigarette type power ports that are automatically shut off 30 minutes to one hour after the ignition it shut off, along with the regular cigarette lighter that shuts off immediately with the ignition.

Robert, do you leave the battery in the radio, when you plug it into the cigarete plug in the mobile? Might have cooked the battery.

Power Problem
Hi Everyone, I have had a problem with my FT-60 of late. I primarily use it in my truck as my mobile radio. Last weekend I Plugged it in to the car charger and when I disconnected it the radio powered off. I plugged it back in and it powered on again. In checking charge of the battery with now load, my meter shows 8.7 volts. I was using it that way with the battery hooked and this morning it just decided to power off and has not powered up since.
Anyone know if this is an easy fix? Or is it fixable at all? Or is the radio dead? Thanks in advance. Robert M. KC6ZZG |

Doubles as a "bench" power supply, or running my other QRP stuff. The SLA gel cells don't seem to "self discharge" too badly, FWIIW. |
