Re: Smart Charger for FT-60R?

I believe the CD-26 charging cradle should suit the FT-60. It doesn't appear to list it as such, but it lists other handhelds (such as the vx-120) which also work with the VAC-370 fast charger, which is listed as an FT-60 accessory.

The wall wart that came with it is a PITA & in my old age I'm sometimes forgetting that I have the FT-60 on charge. Much more of that & the battery will be toast.

Anyone else care to comment?

Re: Transmit Failure on UHF in Memory Mode

Joshua

While I cannot say I have experienced this exact problem, I did experience something similar. In memory mode, certain VHF frequencies would transmit while others would restart the radio when attempted. It did not seem dependent on TX power as some local med power freqs would reboot while other high power ones would not. Regardless, the battery was replaced and all was well. The old battery when using the drop in charger would indicate an error and stay yellow.

I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries in the alkaline case.? I remove the cells from the case and charge them in a MAHA C-9000 charger (actually a pair of chargers), which is an excellent charger for AA/AAA NiMH cells.

Nice thing is that this philosophy can be applied to several of the HT's I own.? I no longer need to buy replacement battery packs, and I don't need to use a different charger for each radio.

Wish I'd have done this before I bought all those chargers!

Re: Transmit Failure on UHF in Memory Mode

Sounds dumb, but is your battery charged?
Great point, Paul. Not only does the FT-60 require a little more current on 440 ... but you could be talking for several minutes on VHF at Medium or Low Power, then not be able to talk at all on UHF High Power - IF your battery needed charging.

Sounds dumb, but is your battery charged? I know that when it gets a little low, it will receive fine, but transmit, and it re-boots.

I think there is a discussion here about that. "Mine" the messages. I think you do void the warranty, and it involves also removing a piece of film that water proofs the microphone.

I use the hand microphone/speaker most of the time.

Transmit Failure on UHF in Memory Mode

Glen

Has anyone experienced a transmit failure on UHF in the memory mode.
Radio resets and starts up again when PTT is depressed. VHF transmit is OK in memory mode.

Radio works fine on UHF in VFO mode.

Thanks.

As a matter of fact I do. You nailed it! I just tested with password on and off and you are correct. Thanks!!!

In the event of erratic operation of the transceiver, it is possible
that data on the micropro-

do this:
1. Turn the radio off.
2. Press and hold in the MONI switch (just below the PTT switch)
while turning the radio on.
3. Rotate the DIAL knob to select one choice from the reset menu:
F1 SETRST: Resets the Set (Menu) mode settings to their factory
defaults.
F2 MEMRST:Clears the Memory settings to factory defaults.
F3 MB RST: Clears the Memory Bank Assignments.
F4 ALLRST: Clears all memories and other settings to factory defaults.
4. Press the [F/W] key momentarily to complete the reset procedure.

works perfectly even on a broken rig (tested to be sure)

Latest FT60E

The latest batch are made ibn China and cost ?129 in UK which is cheaper than Ebay.

Handbook is dated 2011 and in excellent Engliah. The only problem is that the microphone hole is blocked which muffles speech a bit. I have read that this affects other Yaesu handhelds.

Is it easy to open the case and sort this?

Re: Reset Menu

So far I'm very impressed. I just sold a VX5R, because I wanted a new dual band, without alot of fluff - just a solid HT.

My biggest Praise of the radio so far, is that I have had a number of QSO's using the 5 watt setting already and the HT does NOT get HOT in my hand. I don't know if I just havn't talked at high power long enough yet or not, but on the VX5R it would have been hot to the touch during that same length of QSO.

This radio reminds me of my first HT - the HTX202 - it feels solid in my hand - it doesnt feel like a toy.

I have went through the reset process and I still cannot get the clone feature to change when push to talk is pressed. There is nothing left as far as the memory goes. Can anyone help with this problem?

I locked it with F/W and 6
then tried the reset -- nothing happened
then turned off the radio

now it will not come back on at all

My Novice test was done by a VE in the spring of 1957, IIRC. Long ago, and far away. Used our club station (W1YU), and built myself a keyed crystal oscillator with a 6AG7 when I went home for the summer.

Re: Aftermarket vs. Stock Whip Antenna Performance

Nagoka makes a pretty nice collapsible whip that I use when traveling. Good as a 1/4 wave when fully extended. 70 cm when collapsed.

Re: FT60 - is it OK to run radio direct from car battery?

W3FIS

My strategy with the Wouxun when I travel is to load a series of files on my laptop with the repeaters in the locations I'll be. For the FT-60R, I make use of the bank feature. A bank for each area I plan on visiting.

/paul W3FIS

Re: antenna

W3FIS

I have had good results with a "generic" 1/4 wave whip, as well as the Diamond antenna. I use an SMA/BNC adapter however, on the Diamond, as the Diamond SMA doesn't mate correctly on the FT-60R, but does on my VX-170/177 units. The "generic" 1/4 wave has an SMA fitting that works nicely, so that is what I use most of the time.

As to microphone, I own the stock Yaesu one. The problem with that is securing the plug appropriately. The VX-170/177 have a screw-in plug, which retains better. A friend swears by the Yaesu VOX speaker/mic, but that was more than I wanted to spend.

For satellite use, I have a big rubber band to both hold the radio in the bracket, and retain the plug in the radio securely.

As for an earphone, the cheap ones from Rat Shack work well, or a set of headphones and mono/stereo adapter, or headphones (Philmore, etc.) that have a mono/stereo switch.
