Re: New vs Old

?
I've loved my wife's now 5 year old FT-60R so much, I'm thinking about buying one for myself. Hers is made in Japan. I've heard the new ones are now made in China and aren't the same/as good as as the older ones. Can someone here give me a rundown on the differences? Thanks!

All, I am new in this, I have a handheld transceiver (2 meter) and need advice on what specification for an external antenna that I can mount on my pick up truck. I will get another one for the truck and keep the handheld for mobile. Could some on help me with that or if there is an old one that you need anymore. Phong |
Re: Keep FT-60 on Standby ?
>> ...?BUT it may damage the battery and/or the radio ...
Got a source for that statement? Leaving a FT-60R ON in its drop-in charger will not harm the battery. It will take it a little longer to fully charge, but no harm will come t the battery nor radio. SOURCE: Personal experience, knowledge of how the intelligent charger works. BUT - If you are using the pre-2013 models with the AC charger that plugs directly into the side of the radio, do not charge more than about 8 hours max. That AC wall wart is a dumb, constant-current charger, and is NOT the method to best charge the NiMH chemistry. Clint K6LCS (909) 999-SATS |
Re: Keep FT-60 on Standby ?
开云体育Hey Ed Yes it is possible to keep the radio on or in a charger. BUT it may damage the battery and/or the radio. It is not good for the battery to operate the radio, and be charging at the same time. So the best way is to charge the battery by itself or 2nd best turn off the radio, place it into the charger with the battery and wait the 4 or so hours to get a healthy complete charge. Hope this help. Wassim WN6WJN |

开云体育I charged off the shelf NiMH cells that way for many years, never a problemat all.? The AA pack was great that way. No days I dont use it much because I have to take the cells out to charge.? Wish I had my original FT60R back it was a better radio overall - this newer one does not have the receive that the old one had I think they changed something. On 06/11/2016 08:56 AM,

Re: FT-60R what is the pressure switch in the battery compartment
Although we CAN perform that battery tray "mod," I am not sure we SHOULD ...(grin)
If we purchase inexpensive or sub-par NiMH cells and charge them on the radio and they leak, we have not only voided our warranties, but possibly also messed up a radio. I still prefer charging NiMH cells OFF the radio in a Maha charger. Not only will there not be any possibility of damaging a radio, but more air circulates around the cells - and HEAT is the major enemy of NiMH cells. Clint K6LCS |

You will note that the contact in the radio lines up with the exposed end of the bottom battery in the rechargeable packs. In the older FT-60's that could be charged via a wall wart, it functions as the charging contact for the pack. When I worked at a ham radio dealer a few years ago, we had a few radios returned because of the battery wouldn't take a charge. Turns out the factory had affixed the battery label too far to the right, covering up the exposed end of the battery which prevented the battery from being charged through the radio. Nowadays the label has a notch in the lower right corner to help prevent this situation in the future, Since the newer (made since early 2013) FT-60's cannot be charged with wall wart, my assumption is that the contact in question no longer has any function. 73, Jim K5JG On 6/9/2016 11:57 AM, John Buck kh7t@... Re: Digest Number 3299
开云体育That is the charge sense line that tells the radio that a rechargeable battery is attached. ?It contacts the edge of the bottom battery. ?The AA battery pack is insulated from this so it won't try to charge alkaline battery's. ?By the was, if you do want use rechargeable batts in the AA pack you can very carefully cut the paper cover on the bottom cell so the contact will touch the battery. Then you can recharge nimh in the alkaline pack. ?There is an instruction on this somewhere on the internet. ? In the battery compartment about 1/4 inch in from the lower left corner
(Battery removed) there is a spring up device. This is not one of the end contacts. What is the purpose of this feature? Is it a switch or what? I cannot find any reference to it in the operating or service manuals. John KH7T

Problems with Tone Scanning
I am having trouble with tone scanning.
When I try to set up tone scan, I first set squelch type to "T", then press the [F/W] key, then the [2(code)] key, then press and hold the [MHz up] key for one second to start scanning.? However, when I release the [MHz], it does not continue scanning.? Rather, it stops scanning, without having detected a tone. It is supposed to continue scanning indefinitely until it detects a tone, but it doesn't, it stops scanning when I release the [MHz up] key. When I try to set up tone scan for a CTCSS tone, I first set squelch type to "T SQ", then press the [F/W] key, then the [2(code)] key, then press and hold the [MHz up] key for one second to start scanning.? Now it continues to scan, but only slows down when it detects a tone.? It doesn't stop on the tone, but slows down, then resumes scanning at the regular speed. Why is this happening?? How can it be fixed? Thank you, Bart Aronoff / KH7C |

开云体育Thanks Lawrence; I also understand that another problem ?can and does occur with the audio jack where xmit can occur when the plug isn't fully engaged; this has happened to me several times; first time it messed up a simplex link in the field and the radio got real hot. On the speaker issue; a friend had that problem after mishap. Further inside examination revealed the speaker jack was not making good contact therefore the speaker did not speak. Once he adjusted the contacts his problem was solved. LarryG On Tuesday, May 24, 2016 11:54 PM, "'Gary B. Wixom' [email protected] [FT-60]" wrote:

开云体育Owen, ? It doesn’t matter where the squelch is set, I still get the noise on 70cm high end of the band.? 448, 449 etc.? the lower end of the band operates normally, and 2m works fine as well.? Squelch performs properly in those cases.? I haven’t played with the special RF squelch feature keyed to the S-meter.? Perhaps I should look into that, although that should be consistent on all bands.? As an aside, I also have an intermittent speaker.? The audio port works fine, but the speaker can be made to work or not by tapping on the case; mostly not.? I doubt this is related to the noise problem, but ? Gary ? From: FT-60@...
