Although we CAN perform that battery tray "mod," I am not sure we SHOULD ...(grin)
If we purchase inexpensive or sub-par NiMH cells and charge them on the radio and they leak, we have not only voided our warranties, but possibly also messed up a radio.
I still prefer charging NiMH cells OFF the radio in a Maha charger. Not only will there not be any possibility of damaging a radio, but more air circulates around the cells - and HEAT is the major enemy of NiMH cells.
