VFO’s don’t remember anything. That is why you must save to memory. ?88.5 is the slowest tone on the radio so it is the default tone.?

Here's my issue: In VFO mode I set up a repeater with Tone and CTCSS of 151.4, then store it in memory. When I return to VFO, everything works fine. However, if, when in VFO mode, I tune to another frequency in that band and transmit, when I return to my original programmed repeater frequency, the CTCSS defaults back to 88.5 and I can no longer hit the repeater because of wrong CTCSS. I know I can just transmit from Memory mode (and that works fine--it holds all settings).
What am I missing?? Thanks.
