New Final Tubes.. How to Neutralize? 6
Good day FT101ers... I have a FT-101EE that is due for Final replacements as I only can get 40W out of the rig right now and I got myself a pair of 6JS6C Tubes that were tested in a tube checker to be 95% good life. Im reading the service manual page 4-12 were it talks about the neutralization, and get conflicting videos on youtube on how to perform this procedure. In One it has the use of an oscilloscope (which I don't have) and the second one using a second radio (Which I also don't have) Has anyone experienced problems using the method from the service manual, or has perhaps recorded a video of a neutralization effort per manual on youtube? Thanks

FT101ZD Mk1 AM RX but no SSB/CW 2
Hello fellow boat anchor enthusiasts. I have here a very clean FT101ZD Mk 1 recently donated by a colleague. It arrived with him with a known no TX fault. I have not done any TX tests yet. Just trying to get it to receive at the moment. The set only receives on AM - not on SSB / CW. There has been some work done on this set over the years so some red herrings may be in there somewhere. This set used to have RX on all bands but very unstable, (fast frequency jitter). I have been told that after pulling and replacing the three plug in boards, (RF unit, Pre-mix unit, Pre-mix local unit), the set went deaf to all but AM, . All co-ax connections checked OK and in the correct positions. Card slot pins all look fine. No busted tracks on pcb's. Clues: Clearly audible hiss in speaker on all non-working modes. AF PA good. Very quiet SSB heard among the hiss with NB on and AF volume all the way up. Very unstable by the sound of it. Almost inaudible but it is there. Could just be induced across loom somewhere. Dim control at full bright drops hiss volume a little bit. (12V rail). All power rails check OK on Rect. A and Rect. B boards. 8V present on all mode settings at J1, AF pcb, pins 1,2,3 and 4. 3rd digit from left on display non functional, (Possibly Q10 or Q4 on display pcb - will tackle this later. Swapped segments and fault stays at position 3). Herring. It did this before going deaf. When turning the RF gain with ALC off the AM RX is only present in one position. Increasing RF gain knocks out the signal again. There is only one "sweet spot" as it were. AM signal sounds very over modulated. Better with ALC on. Relays click in and out briefly sometimes when switching out of AM mode. (VOX "clunk" through PA?). Possible herring. Checked Q13, Q14, (FET), and Ge diodes D2 to D5 on AF pcb - all OK. Continuity through relay on AF pcb OK. There is a very slight hum in the speaker with volume down. This has occurred since set went deaf. 8V regulator on lower chassis side rail gets a little warm but nothing alarming. Steady 8V out for 12V input. Clarifier seems to only shift one way on RX. ATT switch scratchy but common to all modes, (I think), so doesn't explain lack of SSB / CW. The pre-select control seems to need very little adjustment over each band to pull in AM stations compared to my Mk3. Fishy but also possibly non-herring. Rotary band and mode switches cleaned and seem to be working fine. No crunching / crackling when wiggled. Looks like more than one fault here. If I can get the SSB / CW RX back I can then tackle the frequency instability issue. Maybe it will even transmit one day! Many hours spent with service manual and trying to understand all the frequency conversion stages in this set. Took me years to figure out what an IF actually is! Very aware of 900V / 300V and how to discharge it before working on set. I'm 56 and still here! Any input / advice most appreciated. I have a working Mk3 but loathed to start board swapping just for the sake of it. These sets are a real gem so it would be great to revive another one. Thanks in advance. Have a good day everyone. FT-101E power out and receive don't peak at the same point 3
I recently acquired a FT-101E in very good physical condition. It appears to tune up to full output power. The issue is that full power out and receive do not peak at the same point on the preselector. Does this sound like an alignment issue or is there something else I need to be investigating? Thanks in advance, Steve

Distorted Transmitted Audio 20 meters & Up 2
Hi Todd! Are you using a dummy load for these tests or are you on antennas? You know about some microphones picking up RF from antenna feedlines? I hear that commonly on 80 and 40 metres. There are other sources of distortion within the audio stages of the FT-101 as well. You may need to trouble shoot. Keep us posted on all the symptoms!Gord, VE5UJ

Distorted Transmited Audio 20 meters & Up
Hi Todd, It could be the 6146 output valves have gone soft. It's common for them to drop output power on the higher frequencies when they do. In that case, you could be over driving them on the higher bands. Possibly worth looking at your output power when tuned up to see if it is significantly lower on 15, 12 and 10. It's normal for it to be a bit lower on the higher bands, but it should still be say 80-90% of the output on 20. 73 Gordon G8WWD

New FT-101ZD owner w/ issues: NO TX/RX, digital display won't change freq .. 5
Hello everyone from Colorado! For years been wanting to get a FT 101. My grandfather had several 101's since the 50's but when he exited the hobby 15 years ago, sold them all. To me the 101 is a handsome rig and remembering my grandfather operate his brings back great memories. I found a FT-101ZD in FL several days with some issues. Its SN is: 9F-060716 which makes it an April 79' rig and a MK0 "ZD". The radio powers on and "tubes light" but with no TX or RX. The display stays stuck at 0.200.0 and won't change frequencies either. I am still waiting to receive the radio but I would like to get a "head start" .. Although considered a "hybrid" radio, it still is HUGELY mechanical. My first thoughts are perhaps the rod/linkages might be busted.. * maybe *. I have ordered the service manual and owner's manual as well and waiting on those as well. Might you fine folks here chime care to share your thoughts, experiences etc. I would certainly appreciate it. 73 Bryan, KB9UZO

FT-101B Parts 2,3,4 schematics 5
I can't find part 2 or more parts to the full schematic for the 101B files. Part 1 full schematic is listed but no further. Is it located somewhere else? The copies are the best I've seen and would like the full schematic set. Does anyone have the other parts? Todd AL7PX

Clarifier sync RX/TX 4
I've been been adjusting and checking my old 101B and find I do not have correct voltage on clarifier terminal on VFO during receive. I'm only getting .850 volts, less than a 1 volt. If I zero the clarifier and transmit I can match voltage with the zero adjustment pot. Roughly 3.70 voltage. I have a good supply voltage of 6 0 volts, and steady. Anyone see these conditions before, any help would be appreciated. Todd AL7PX

Hard of hearing FT-101EX success! 8
Success!! Well boys and girls, I replaced the 3N211 mosfet on the HF board with a $6 Amazon NTE454 and the little beast roared to life! Next project is to clean the relay, as it's exhibiting a slightly high resistance compared to rcvr RCA jack. This continues to be a fun and learning experience and my thanks to all of you who chimed in. The Facebook, Yootoob and email reflector resources made this saga a mostly enjoyable one! Be well. de kn7sfz On 2/3/2023 11:59 AM, Richard kn7sfz via groups.io wrote: Thanks Roger, just grabbed it! I have a 46 inch flat panel monitor, which makes it very easy for me to zoom in and out and navigate the large jpeg image, which I do indeed prefer to the pdf version (I have Adobe reader). I don't believe I'll need to print it out, as that is a little more difficult with these old eyes. It reminds me of a folded schematic I have that goes with one of my old Galaxy V transceivers. It's about 2 1/2' tall and 4' wide, so I had to hang it in front of me and it sure took up a lot of real estate! The saga of my hard of hearing EX model continues. I checked out the bulb fuse and it was fine. I then removed the HF board, cleaned the edge connector and and RF mosfet (3N211) socket and still weak receive. Then, following a well made YouTube video, checked the mosfet with a DMM and it seemed to respond well, so I guess I won't need to replace it. I suppose now it's time to jump in with both feet and follow the signal path after I read up a little more on how it's processed. For anyone reading this who'd like to chime in, here's where I am so far. with a small length of wire in the antenna socket, I can barely hear my signal generator on 7.100 with no S meter movement. When I connect the sig gen directly to the wire, it gets much louder and the S meter moves up about halfway. The VFO seems to work fine and is accurate, as I can tune back and forth. However, turning the preselector has zero effect in the volume or meter movement, so something is amiss there. I'll probably post this on the Facebook group as well. I know I'm not the first one to go down this road...haha! I just added a jpeg version of the same file in the same folder. You could put the pdf version on a usb stick and take it to one of the printers (Kinkos?) and get a full 11 x 30 inch printed. 73 Roger VE7LB group owner

FT-101 Main Tuning Dial Off Frequency 17
Please advise how to align the main frequency dial with the actual frequency being used. I'm referring to the top lighted dial. I recall seeing somewhere that there is an adjustment (pot?) which requires removal of the speech processing board but I can't locate this website again. :-( 73s Bruce AE0IQ

Schematic jpeg? 11
Question from a newbie to the group. Has anyone scanned the long fold-out schematic for the FT-101E to a single high res jpeg file? If so, I would appreciate a link to download same. Being able to zoom in and out and scroll right and left would be great. The chopped up schematics in the downloadable PDF manuals are difficult for these old eyes. I'm anxious to get started on my EX model that has weak receive and been reading about the bulb fuse and RF amp mosfet. Tnx for any help. Richard kn7sfz

FT101E No Output Power
All, Hi Joe here. Thanks in advance and your help in my quest to get an FT101E back to health. A friend of mine, an elderly ham, was transmitting without an antenna connected to the radio. Yes, that’s right, without an antenna. This cause the RX and TX to fail. This happened several years ago and over this time I’ve been able to get the receiver working as it should but the TX is still not working. Using the radios internal calibrator I get anywhere from S9 to 10 over S9 depending on the band. I did put a good set of tubes in the radio but there is no output on 10,15,20, and 40 meters, and about 5 watts on 80 meters. I haven’t checked 160 at this point. I’ve replaced C13, C125, C131. The driver and final tube voltages are fine. Relays are fine, and I did swap relays from my working 101EE to no avail, as well as trying couple sets of known good tubes just in case. A couple of things to note. The -100 volts at PC1076B reads -170 volts, but this is what my working 101EE reads so not sure if this bad. There is no voltage on Pin 5 of the mixer board, which should by 13v. On 80M I hear crackling on receive, like a bad tube or a bad cap, and the plate knob acts like the the preselect that “peaks the receiver” but not as significant as the Preselector knob, I do have proper idle current of 60ma. On 80M, the Preselector, plate, and load controls do peak the output power, but again only 5 watts. Another test I did is I pulled out the final tubes and transmitted with only the driver tube and clearly heard both a CW and SSB voice signal on another receiver. I am using a 50 ohm dummy load for the test. Any help is greatly appreciated. Joe KC5DFP

Help needed for FT-101EE 2
Hello group, My 101EE has taken ill and I need your help with troubleshooting. I'll try to lay out the events chronologically in order to explain what's going on. * Unit was used primarily on 80m achieving 100 watts out for about a year. No real issues * Unit then sat unused for about six months. * Unit brought back up but with considerably less power out (~20 watts max on 80m and far less on higher bands. * Checked the 12BY7 driver tube on a tester and it showed marginal. * Replaced with another 12BY7 (tube had no markings, but was in a box labeled "12BY7' and it had same form factor as 12BY7. * About 5 seconds after turning heaters on, smoke appeared. Specific location of smoke source was not obvious. * Turned unit off immediately after seeing smoke. (Maybe about two seconds worth of smoke) * Replacement tube was apparently NOT a 12BY7!! * Upon extensive visual inspection, I cannot see ANY fried, melted, cracked, blackened, or otherwise damaged components or wiring. Everything all *looks* normal. * Unit still receives perfectly fine, but... * Will not key the relays when PTT or MOX is activated. Stays in RCV mode. I'm wondering if I can get some help with trying to figure out what got damaged and what I should do to troubleshoot and get this thing back working. Any help appreciated... 73's Mike KD7VRG

For Sale: FT-101zd 2
THIS IS STILL AVAILABLE AND STILL A GOOD DEAL! I have an FT-101ZD for sale. It's in excellent working condition and about 8/10 cosmetically. It will also come with an outboard second VFO. Photos available upon request. I bought this from a friend who did extensive renovation. He's an expert in the repair of these old rigs. I had thought that I'd use it more than I have, and it's become excess to my needs. I will sell the rig and external VFO for $550, plus actual professional packing and shipping charges. The rig also comes with a manual and a Yaesu hand mic. If you've been looking for one of these old classics, you probably can't find a better one. I greatly prefer PayPal for payment. FT-101EE shield for 12BY7? 8
Hello again group, On my FT-101EE, I see that the tube socket for the 12BY7 driver tube is designed for a bayonet type metal shield. Is this factory design? or did someone in the past modify? Thinking I better get a shield for it... Mike KD7VRG
