Early FT101 Serial Numbers

Hello All

I am trying to understand the serial number on my FT101:

1M117016

I have been able to establish from the PCB number reference list that this is an early 25,000 or under model.

Does the 1M/1M11 have a meaning?

Is this then model number 17016?

Any guidance appreciated!

Steve,

I would say that your FT 101 was built in November of 1991.?

Hi Don

Thanks for your response.!

So is this how to interpret:

1=91
M11=November
7016 is the serial number

Correct?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

That is the way I read it. That jives with when the FT 101 was produced. Have fun with it. They are a nice old classic.?

They didn't build 101's in 1991. The early 101's were built in the early 70's. Your rig was built in 1971. I have a "B" model built in 1974.?

Todd,

You are correct. A typo on my part. I was thinking 71 but for some reason hit 91. I have a E model built in 1975.?
Sorry for the confusion.?

I have acquired an FT-101 with serial number 83C133037.
With all the other posts of demystifying the meaning behind the serial number I understand the following.
-Built in 1983 (althought the ft-101 was only built from 1970 through 1971, so this does not add up)
- C=January?
- 13 is the Lot number
- 3037 is the simple serial number.
?
Does this mean that even thought the front shows it to be ft-101 that it could in fact be a 101z or something else?
Any clarifications to this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I have an ft101b.? The case an chassis have different serial numbers.? I know it is a 101b because of the circuitry and the boards for a couple of the modules.? Find a service manual and look at the table showing which circuit board versions are in what 101 generation. Find instances where different circuit board versions change. Try to match yours up.? It may be confusing since some of the boards are interchangable...
Good luck!

Thanks for the info Tom.? That is anninsite that I have yet to come across in print and was one of my hopes not to have to do ?.? Oh well, so goes life.
Will I have to remove boards for most or any of this pls?

I have the serial number on the back panel, where should I expect to find the other please?

John,
?
Your radio was made in 1973. There were no FT-101 radios (with no suffix) made in 1983. The last 5 digits of the number on the back plate are the actual serial number, so 33037 in your case. It must have been a very late model, just before the FT-101B came out.
?
To see the other serial number you would have to take the outer case off. It is on the side chassis adjacent to the crystal bank / driver area. This number may or may not match the number on the rear panel.

Thank you Peter.
How did you decifer 1973 as year of manufacturing?? I thought the digit before the number was the year.? Though it should be a single digit before the letter.? This I assumed 1983.
Might you be able to clarify the rundown please.

Hi John,?
Peter is correct, why there is an 8 in front of the 3 is anybody’s guess, as for it being a ZD version, the ZD is a totally different radio.?
The main thing is you have an FT101 and have joined the happy band of users of this fine radio.
?

?
Amanda, you are correct, I am now part of this happy group and happy to be here and learn.
Btw: Peter said mine is an FT-101 but just before the ft-101B came out.
I am assuming to say it is an FT-101A.? He said nothing about it being a ZD model....

Hi John,
?
As Amanda says, the 8 is an oddity, but the date code is the pair of characters with a single digit followed by a letter, in your case 3C. The Z and ZD were completely different radios to the FT-101.
?
There was no FT-101A. These radios went straight from the FT-101 to the FT-101B. Similarly there were no C or D models, and the models that followed the FT-101B were the FT-101E and FT-101F. The FT-101 thru to the FT-101F were only manufactured between 1970 and 1979.
?
The early radios, FT-101 with no suffix, can be broken down into a number of sub-variants as Yaesu made frequent changes. You might hear of the FT-101 Mk I and the Mk II, and there was even a Mk 0 identified! For a better understanding of the history and changes of the FT-101 the FoxTango.org web page is well worth a read.
?
An even more in-depth understanding of the history of these radios can be had by looking at the Fox Tango Newsletters that are in the Files section of this group. These date back to just after the introduction of the FT-101 in the early 1970's and identify many of the problems with the radio and changes/improvements made by Yaesu as well as by ordinary users of the radio.

Thank you Peter. So are you confirming that mine is simply the FT-101 which was from the original first group of ft-101 radios before the B came out as was stated before?
Thank you for the input.
?
I am also curious about power connectors as mine came with no cables.
I have since acquired an AC cable (Japanese) plug with the pins showing as listed below
3,2,1
6,5,4
9,8,7
12,11,10
Would this be the correct AC for the FT-101?
?
Might you or anyone else be able to confirm the correct pinouts for a DC cable please as I would love to run the rig from my external power supply rather than AC?
?
Is there a mode or component that I must verify to find out if it is able to accept DC power as I recall seeing something of the sort on a website prior to when I acquired this rig?
?
Thank you once again for your input and help.

John,
?
Look at the diagrams in the files section before you wire that plug. The numbering is different between the Japanese and American versions.? Be sure you go by pin orientation. Get it wrong and you get to rebuild the rectifier board.Receive may still work, but no transmit!
