To shield the bottom portion of the tube. This was not an uncommon practice.

Hello again group,
On my FT-101EE, I see that the tube socket for the 12BY7 driver tube
is designed for a bayonet type metal shield. Is this factory design? or
did someone in the past modify?? Thinking I better get a shield for it...
