New caps in a FRG-7 5
Hello fellows I picked up a 1976 Yaesu Musen FRG-7 this year from Dan in Quebec ,this unit seems to work fine but I was always told a unit this old should have the electrolytic caps changed, do you fellows think they should all be changed for new ones and if I get the kit and do it will I have to do a realignment ,I have no problem changing the caps but if I have to do realignment better I leave it alone ,I am sure I could not realign it properly ,any advice fellows ,thanks so much for your time all the very best Rick

Green/Red LED Lock Mod 5
I intend to carry out the bi-colour LED lock mod on my FRG-7. Are there any detailed photos or diagrams showing where the 10v, 0v and led lock pickup points are. The website of monitor.co.uk shows some info but not sure where to get the 10v from and whilst it shows the 0v and led lock connections I'm not sure on which PCB they are. There used to be a YouTube video from a ham in Finland (I think) which gave detailed instructions but can't find it. Many thanks. David G4EDR.

FRG7 LED upgrades. 4
The main dial light bulbs are burned up, the rubber is falling apart and I know that getting these light bulbs is getting harder by the years (some local stores ask $4+ for them). So I wanted to replace them with 5mm warm white leds. I designed a 5mm led holder which slips into the bracket for the light bulbs. First prototype fresh out of the printer. Looks good and it fits (due to a difference in diameter on the center section, it slips into place and when rotated 90 dgr. it locks). Bought some nice 5mm warm white leds and installed them. The result. The leds are less warm compared as the soft glowing original light bulbs. Maybe some red / orange dye could warm it up a little. When everything works out, I will publish the STL file on my website for download to print you own spare parts to keep your Frog in good shape. https://www.ph2lb.nl/blog/index.php?page=frg7-led Also I started to work on a drop in replacement voor the PB-1560 PCB's (the light bulb PCB's between the MHz and Select) with 1206 SMD leds with the same color. I use 2 leds for each segment because the 1206 leds aren't that bright and this way you get a better light spread. Just simple testpads to solder the wires to. (Yes I know MHz is with a capital H ;-) ) Hope that before this weekend the SMD 1206 LEDS arrive so I can make a prototype to see how the light looks. When all goes well I'm going to order a batch of prototype PCB's and upgrade my Frog. -- 73 Lex PH2LB https://www.ph2lb.nl/

FRG-7 main Tuning Drum issues. 2
I recently added several FRG 7s to my receiver collection and while both are fairly minty cosmetically one of the units has an issue with the main KHZ tuning drum. It seems to hit the limits before reaching the end of the scale. So for example tuning down towards 0 you might hit a Soft stop at about 50khz but can continue to tune down with resistance to 0. Then if you reverse and tune up to 1000khz you meet resistance at about 900 but can continue to tune until you reach a full stop. So it’s like the stops are see-sawing back and forth as you tune from end to end. I believe there is some sort of rotating stop system being used but have no info on how to set it up. The rig I have ( h@ve ) that works normally has sufficient overtravel on both ends of the scale before hitting hard stops..

FRG-7 schematics 2
Hi All, I've uploaded a some files to /g/Yaesu-FRG-7/files/FRG-7%20service%20notes/schematics Here's a bit from the covering document. Feedback welcome. Enjoy! "There appear to be a proliferation of FRG-7 schematics on the web, of varying quality and with many differences. The aim of this document is to present two high-resolution schematics which capture as much as possible of these differences, plus a guide to tabulating differences of any schematic and the two given here. These two schematics are presented here as files FRG-7_schematic_v{1/2}.0.gif."

3D printed FRG-7 main dial knob. 7
For those who are in need of a FRG-7 main dial knob and have a 3D printer, today I took the knob of my Frog and started drawing. The STL files can be download from : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4809282 (also link to the TInkercad design to modify it to your needs). Enjoy and hope it helps. I wanted to print one, but my son has claimed my 3D printer for the next 15 hours. ? -- 73 Lex PH2LB https://www.ph2lb.nl/

modern digital readout 14
Interested in adding digital readout to the FRG-7 has anyone done this in the past few years? what product did you get ? I see possibilities on the net but I don't want to end up waiting weeks to get something that is a PIA to program thanks

Missing Q408 & T406: replacement candidate suggestions? 5
Hi all, Picked up a FRG-7 as part of an auction lot, and it's in need of a pretty heavy restoration - both cosmetically and circuit operation wise. First up will be electrolytic cap replacement and a thorough check that all supply voltages are where they're supposed to be, and I'll go from there to see what other work needs doing. But I also notice that the previous owner has pulled most of the components associated with the BFO, including Q408 & T406. Looks like Q408, a 2SK19-GR, can be replaced with a common N-ch JFET like the MPF102 (being in Australia, NTE equivalents are not common here) - hope someone might be able to confirm the MPF102 is suitable? And for T406 - guess I'll just try any donor variable inductor coil, especially if it comes from a 455kHz section of a suitable donor radio, perhaps may need to alter the value of C437 to bring it to proper resonance? Unless someone has a suggestion for a specific, readily available equivalent? Thanks in advance, Jason

Issue with Bands 3
When I put a signal on the antenna I’m able to tune in on the D & C bands but on A & B bands I can’t find any signal. I do hear a tone but it’s internal if I kill the signal gen it’s still alive. Any knows issues that may cause this? Andrew

Digital frequency readout for a FRG-7 15
Hello ,I have been reading much about Digital frequency read out for a FRG-7 ,is there a kit I can get with hook up instructions for a FRG-7 ,I would like to get one that is outside the receiver even if I have to make a box to put it in , I don,t mind paying a bit more for a unit that comes complete with box and everything I need for hook up. I have replaced all the large caps in this unit and it works great , I don,t want a kit that I need to make a lot of changes inside the receiver to make it work ,would be thankful for any info and help on where I could purchase the Digital Frequency display unit that will work on the FRG-7 ,all the very best stay safe Rick

Antenna - need some advice please 6
Hello I am looking for some help or advice, I have two Yaesu Musen FRG-7 recievers that seem to work equally good . I have an attic antenna ,it goes 22 feet along the beams and then 6 feet across the back of the house and then back along the beams on the other side of the peek for another 22 feet , it is bare copper antenna wire and then goes to my receiver in the basement with a single plastic coated lead wire , this lead in wire runs down from the attic and thru the closet floor into the crawl space and this run is about 35 feet , I also have 24 feet of slinky stretched out on the inside attic peak and can join this with the single antenna wire below the attic in the closet or use them separately, I did buy and try a MFJ 1020 C indoor active antenna , I sent it back it did nothing for me . My shortwave pick up is there but not that good and at times there is not much at all , I think these FRG-7 sets are good for shortwave receiving but I am thinking the antenna is the problem , I can’t run an antenna outside the house I have to have it inside and I think the attic is best , is there any advice you can give that will help me out , perhaps a different antenna I could buy or make myself , I would be very thankful for any help or advice , thanks for your time all the very best Rick email rdelaplante@... A 3D printed FRG-7 light and power switch knob 8
Hello all, "The switch knob is gone, long life the switch knob." Got a new Frog in the workbench in a fare condition, but needed a lot of cleaning (dust and other unidentified stuff and gore) and also new knobs on the light and power switch. Which are very hard to get. So I pulled of the knobs of my other FRG-7's and it turned out there are 2 models of the knobs (left is original, right is the later model). I liked the original model more so I fired up TinkerCad and started drawing. And the second prototype was spot on. Needs a little trimming on the edges, but looks good already and it functional (grey is original knob, white is 3D printed 0.12 layer, 100% infill). Next steps : * order roll of red PLA to print the power button. * print a few more to see if it really is working. * publish STL file on my website (link will be post here). When the results are reproducible, I will post the design on my website (and the STL in the file archive of this group). So when you get your hands on a FRG-7 without a light or power switch knob, you know can print your own. -- 73 Lex PH2LB https://www.ph2lb.nl/

[ADV] Re: [Yaesu-FRG-7] A 3D printed FRG-7 light and power switch knob
Lex, Whenever you are ready to sell one of the red power switches let me know. The one on my FRG-7 still works but is very loose. I sense that it is getting close to breaking. Greg Storms KD7SRC
