A 3D printed FRG-7 light and power switch knob

Hello all,

"The switch knob is gone, long life the switch knob."

Got a new Frog in the workbench in a fare condition, but needed a lot of cleaning (dust and other unidentified stuff and gore) and?also new knobs on the light and power switch. Which are very hard to get.??So I pulled of the knobs of my other FRG-7's and it turned out there are 2 models of the knobs (left is original, right is the later model).

I liked the original model more so I fired up TinkerCad and started drawing. And the second prototype was spot on.

?Needs a little trimming on the edges, but looks good already and it functional (grey is original knob, white is 3D printed 0.12 layer, 100% infill).

Next steps :

  1. order roll of red PLA to print the power button.
  2. print a few more to see if it really is working.
  3. publish STL file on my website (link will be post here).

When the results are reproducible, I will post the design on my website (and the STL in the file archive of this group).

So when you get your hands on a FRG-7 without a light or power switch knob, you know can print your own.?

I second what Randy said.? Terrific work.

?

Makes me want a 3D printer even though my FRG-7 has all the original switches!

have a look at the document in /g/Yaesu-FRG-7/files/4%20-%20FRG-7%20Service%20Notes/FRG-7%20Switch%20Notes%20v1.0.pdf
for notes on replacement switch levers. These are not the same as the 'original' rounded-skirt levers, but ARE original on some (many?) receivers. A friend of
mine has an FRG-7 which he bought new here in Australia back in the 70's (still in original condition), and has the straight-skirt levers.

That is excellent info Steve. And looking that there is a replacement (although not in grey) for the straight-skirt?levers I keep to the rounded-skirt levers.?

Saved the documents on my shack server for future reference.?

And thanks for the compliments.?

Update : Yesterday evening I printed a few more and found out that the margins where to small to make a good and easy fit (filament 3D printing isn't exact science). So today I will be looking at where I have to modify the design to make it fit better.?

I got my self a rol of red PLA (it's a little bit lighter then the red color of the original knob, but it will do) and printed me a few power switch knobs.?
?
The light switch knob is also a little lighter because the darker grey I have is almost the same color as the front panel.

The final result and I'm quite happy with it.?

For who is interested, I have added this story (and more) to my website :??
