A 3D printed FRG-7 light and power switch knob
2
Hello Greg, I don't have any complete switches yet (the FRG-7 for parts I got, didn't have the switchs anymore), but can send you a set of knobs when you want (still have your postal adres laying around). I will contact you in a private message. 73 Lex PH2LB https://www.ph2lb.nl/

[ADV] Re: [Yaesu-FRG-7] A 3D printed FRG-7 light and power switch knob
Thanks for the reply, Lex. The knobs on my FRG-7 are all fine but that power switch is going to go. I can wait until you can get the complete switch done. 73, Greg KD7SRC

Issue with 1MHz not locking
3
Hi all, My recently restored FRG-7 has developed a slightly annoying problem. When cold, the 0, 1 & 2 MHz bands won't light up the 'lock' LED. After some time warming up, the 0 & 2 MHz bands will lock, but the 1 MHz band never does. However, at all times, if I centre each MHz selection, the receiver works quite OK on all those bands, receiving signals just fine. When going through the restoration, I replaced most capacitors - electrolytic, mylar / greencap / polyester - but not any of the disc ceramics. Q102, 103 & 105 were replaced, too, but that shouldn't have any bearing on the lock LED lighting on some bands and not others. I realigned the FRG-7 back about 6 months ago, and all was fine then. The problem is likely to be either with the comb generator Q301 / D301 / D302 not producing enough level down around 3-5 MHz, or the 1st oscillator Q201 not producing enough level down around 55-57 MHz, or perhaps an issue with the mixer Q106. Maybe VR102 is simply just set too fine? Before I go ripping into the radio and checking levels from the 1st osc or comb generator, has anyone else experienced this issue, and recall what the cause was? Thanks, Jason

I have found a possible source for FRG7 switch handles. This 3D printer made me a spinner knob and it works perfectly. Will let everyone know when I get a quote. Bob

FRG-8800 keypads
Hi, I hope it's not too off-topic to discuss the 8800 here as I can't find a dedicated group for this RX. Mine has problems with excessive contact bounce in the numeric keypad. What is the construction, is it membrane keypad or are there individual switches that can be cleaned? Apart from this and the occasional PLL lock issue when it gets to warm, I'm happy with how it performs. 73 Nick

FRG-7 lock light problem
7
Hi there. My friend very kindly gave my his old FRG-7. It works really well and I love it! It has one problem. The lock Led will not work, unless the radio was turned off and sitting for a few hours. Then, the led will work but only very dimly. The led will continue getting dimmer and after a few minutes it will simply stop working. The actual bulb is fine, I know this because when powering up the radio, it will light up for less than a second at full brightness. It's a strange problem. It seems like as the radio warms, up the led stops working. Other than that, everything works fine! I will appreciate any help, and I thank you in advance.

Another 3D printed knob for the FRG-7 added to my collection.
2
Recently I got a question from a fellow ham if I have a replacement knob for the Fine-Tune. Unfortunatly I didn't but told them that I wanted to 3D design all the knobs of the FRG-7. So during my holiday I started to work on the 3 knob of the FRG-7. The one which can be used for the Preselect, Mhz and the Volume. My first prototype print (0.12mm / 100% infill) next to a original knob of my FRG-7. I'm quite happy with the result and will continue working on the others. So when you need replacements knobs, stay tuned. Soon they will be ready and released on my website. https://ph2lb.nl/blog/index.php?page=yaesu-frg7-mods -- 73 Lex PH2LB https://www.ph2lb.nl/

L101 pin not soldered
I just took delivery of a fixer upper FRG-7. I did a full alignment but was still disappointment with the results of this receiver. So I put in on the bench and found that L101 (4 coils on a rod after the RF AMP) the first pin was not soldered to the coil wire. See picture: After soldering I am now getting a 20-30 dB improvement in reception. At 1.5 MHz -55dBm gave me S9 before soldering now I get -78dBm giving me S9. I have a question do others have this coil not soldered and only wire wrapped. I am just curious if this was Yaesu's manufacturing process or if this was just forgotten to be solder and thus a defect. This is my first post so it might take time to post. Thanks for your time. Unkown speaker related switch
2
Fellow Frogers, Just picked up a new-to-me FRG-7 and noticed what seemed to be an unkown mod consisting of a DPDT slide switch (S-7) w/ two resistors (R-18 & 19), connected to the internal speaker. But surprise, some of the schematics show these components in the lower right near the speaker. However, they are not on the parts list, nor are they mentioned in operating / calibration instructions or circuit description. There are no related labels on chassis or cabinet. The switch is physically attached to a frame brace in the upper right rear of the chassis, just below the white battery plug/socket. Switch is poorly positioned and clearly not intended to be accesssed often or easily. The resistors are either switched out of circuit, or placed in series w/ speaker: one between audio & speaker, the other between speaker & chassis gnd. The only in-circuit effect seems to be some lowering of the volume. Serial # 300585 and apparently this radio lived in Canada at some point. Any idea what this undocumented "feature" is about?

What mod it this?
8
Hi all, I obtained a FRG-7 which is in working condition but needs still a lot of attention. An extra PCB is added and I really do not know which mod this is. I hope you can help me! There is also a lose red wire which could be connected but.....first I would like to know what mod this is so I can find more detailed information and connect it the way it should be connected. They also modified the power with a 7812 and....cut of the external 12V cabling. Cleaning rotary swithes needs to be done and.... Does anyone recognizes this? best 73' s Kees PA1CJT

Antenna recommendation for nursing home setting
13
I've been prepping my FRG-7 to lend to a gentleman who lives in a 12 x 13 ft room in a nursing facility.. I'm looking for suggestions of what sort of antenna to set up for him. Do I need to connect to all 3 ports or just one? I modified the radio today and installed an IEC socket with integral EMI filter mostly to improve the ground situation and simplify cord handling. Thanks, Reg
