Tip: Updating software / Firmware on YD7001

Hi

Perhaps no one else will miss the step that I missed when updating the YD7001, but hopefully someone else will benefit from me documenting my error.

Many of us have been applying updates to the DR5000 for several years.? Here it was a two step process:
  1. Install the update software on the Windows system
  2. Update the DR5000 firmware - click on the USB button on the DR5000 image to open the DR5000 - USB Properties window,?then click on 'Update DR5000' button.
With the DR5000 upgraded to be a YD7001 (by the installation of the YD9401) the update process for the YD7001 becomes a three step process:
  1. Install the update software on the Windows system
  2. Update the YD7001 firmware - click on the USB button on the YD7001 image to open the YD7001 - USB Properties window,?then click on 'Update YD7001' button.
  3. Update the YD9401 firmware - click on the WiFI button on the YD7001 image to open the WiFi Props Properties window,?then click on the Expert tab, where you will then click on the Update thunderbolt in the red box on the lower right quarter.
I missed this last step repeatedly and hence was not installing the firmware updates on the YD9401. Until I discovered my error, I could not figure out why the improvements YaMoRC was making available to me for testing were not working, when Karst continued to state they were working in his environment.?

Hopefully someone else will benefit from this post.

Thanks Jay, this was very helpful. I had been downlevel. I had assumed the Windows app would let me know when updates were available and just pull them in on command.
Now I know that I need to monitor the product support tab on the website and download these manually.
Announcements of updates on this list would be helpful... :)

Regards,
Bob Gamble

Karst did post build 55 availability in the YaMoRC forum back in April.
He does give update instructions in there plus 1 step I had ignored in the WiFi update section - you need to tick the SPIFFS button.
I didn't see a notice for the build 59 though. I only spotted that by accident.

I also missed the update notice for the build 59. Some how I don't think that it was posted in one of the forums.

I haven't been able to find any release notes for this build. It would be nice to have some.

Yours,

Richard

Hello Richard,

there was only a minor change in 59, so Karst didn't announced it.

But I think soon there will be a new build, because 2 days ago he found the reason of the 4 client limit on the WLAN interface. I got a beta version from him and tested 8 clients via WLAN. The maximum is 10 clients, but I had only 8 devices.

best regards from Germany
Frank

Frank,

My feeling is that it's a bit confusing. If there is a change to the software version on the product support page; I feel that it should be announced on the forum with its description.

Perhaps mine is a minority opinion?

Best regards

Richard

Which forum? YAMORC has a presence in many more places than this mailing system.

If what you have already is working then you don¡¯t need to update and if what you have isn¡¯t working then you would be checking the YAMORC website to find updates.

Karst is busy enough doing an excellent job producing the goods that we want, leave him to do that and if you, or anyone else finds an update on the YAMORC website then post a link here. That is how it works for many products and there is no reason for this to be different.

Many Thanks

Iain Morrison

Regarding build 59

I can confirm one item in build 59 - some minor fixes when the throttle is a TCS UWT-50 or UWT-100 and the functions you are using are Release or Dispatch (under the Operations item in the menu).? Before the fixes, if you used Release or Dispatch, the command station released the loco you were controlling.? You had no control of the loco, even though the display of the throttle still showed that you had control (showed loco number) instead of displaying an E (for empty) that we saw when working with the LNWIs.? With the fix the display after a successful release now shows E.

Note, that release has worked for Engine Driver and WiThrottle since we started with build 55, so there is no change for these throttles that we are aware of.

A couple of weeks a go i updated my DR5000 to the YD7001.

Looking at the file downloaded to convert the CS it was build 55.

Should I keep build 55 or do I update to build 59?

Next week, I have 3 YD7001's I need to know what build I should keep these unit and my YD7001 also.

Well, for this kind of remarks I am quite allergic.... especially the should part.

For YaMoRC there is one official Social Media location:?

For the rest, I try to keep up with another dozen or so fora.? That's pretty time consuming as Iain already mentioned.

Now that we introduced the Configuration Center, I will build the automatic update check in there. So you will be notified when a newer build is available.

?

I hope that we show with this action, that we listen, very much, to our end-users to enhance the user-experience of our products. So don't hesitate to bring forward ideas, wishes, but also bugs ( if any ;) )

?

Greets,

Karst

?

P.S. Maybe it's best to shutdown the YaMoRC.groups.io Forum, as that is actually defunct at the moment ;)?

Karst,

Thank you. This will meet my needs. Much of my career has been in product development both hardware and software. Ensuring that users are able to keep their products up to date generally reduces support calls and improves satisfaction. While some adopt the philosophy that one should only update to fix problems experienced there are often other problems that are either unknown or tolerated that should be fixed. Having an application that is internet connected and shows an available release level that is not updated dynamically is a problem which I am pleased that you will be addressing.

You might also want to know that Facebook is not universally used. Many won't use it for various reasons. I understand that you need to contain your forum interaction efforts but an announcement sent to a distribution list of list servers can be done with a single email and may be worthy of your time. A single line and a link to the release notes on your website would satisfy the comments made here.

Of course the value of a community forum is that any member who notices an update may make a post of "Hey Guys, I just noticed an update...."

Bob Gamble

Iain,

- The majority of users I help do not have their railway room or equipment connected to the internet, therefore they will not know that there are updates.

I suspect you are helping them because they are not connected. Your users lose nothing if they are not connected as they wouldn't be able to update anyway.

My comment stands. If a window shows information that purports to be current, it should be current. If it cannot check currency then it should not show misleading information. This is basic.

What is the latest firmware for the YD9401? I have 1.1.3 and I get an error if I try to update.

--

Heath @ Human[c]ity

You obviously have not connected the YD7001 to USB.

I have both USB and the netowkr connected. But in the panel, I selected USB.

From your comment, it sounds like maybe I need to unplug the network cable completely.
--

Heath @ Human[c]ity

If anyone finds this, you need to ONLY have the USB connected. Unplug your network cable.
--

Heath @ Human[c]ity

Heath, I had to change the connection to USB in the application panel. I wasn't smart enough to just unplug the Ethernet cable. I can't remember if I had to restart it or not, but it was a pain to get the application into a state where the update would work properly.

Sorry... Bull Shit.? It's not an DR5000 anymore ??

You just NEED an USB connection if you want to fool around with your network settings, since soon you are about to cut the branch on which you are sitting ?
