success! Wired it up as per the diagram and it worked. I was getting concerned about what numbers to use but I realise now you just allocate any numbers not used elsewhere.

To use it in a wye the most common way is to make a DR5013 controlled reverse section in one of the legs between the 3 turnouts which needs to be long enough to hold a complete train. The other option
