JUNE 5-9 2024 PARTY UPDATE
4
HELLO EVERYONE! THE JUNE STAR PARTY BEGINS IN 2 DAYS! I hope everyone is looking forward to this party. I now have cooperation from the park people to get ALL the lights either covered in red filters and/or controlling spillage from the security lights affecting the ballfield, while still keeping the building secure. I will be at the park before noon to meet a staff person who will work with me to get this accomplished for the duration of the event, and plan on staying on site until the event ends Sunday at noon. Like all star parties, having good weather is always a plus. Thankfully, for the vast majority of people, it is also a social event, a time when like-minded people get to meet others and share experiences and ideas. For many of us, astronomy can be a pretty solitary hobby. NOTE: There has only been one star party out of seven here that did not offer a single night of good observing, and that was the October party in 2021. All the others had at least 2-4 clear nights, in spite of Canadian wildfire smoke last year, and even when it rained during the day, we were able to observe many nights For those of you who are repeat visitors, welcome back. For those who are new to this party, WELCOME ABOARD! I will have a small white camper near the entrance to the ballfield, next to the batting cage. A registration sign-in tablet and clipboard will be on a table, if I cannot be there the moment of your arrival. If you have a large RV, you will need to park in the parking lot by going past the rest rooms into the large lot on the right side of the main road. PLEASE DO NOT SET UP UNTIL YOU HAVE MET ME. There are rules that have been made RVs, I'll help you find the best locations there. This is a PA STATE PARK, alcohol is NOT allowed, dogs on leashes are. Please take the time to read the park rules, there is a link on our RULES AND INFO page. For anyone with a tent or small camper, you will be able to pick a spot in the field on the left, tuning left before the pavilion. It is random site location to prevent ruts from tires. The road comes in from the north, south is directly in front of you. FYI there is plenty of room for at least 30 additional attendees, so if you are interested, the more the merrier. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR CLUBS AND FRIENDS. Your support is very much needed and appreciated! you can register online or at the event. There is cell service on site.. The original September dates had an unknown schedule conflict, and needed to be changed. I will be asking for input for the September dates, either near September's 1st quarter or last quarter moon. That's it for now! Please have a safe and enjoyable trip. AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL, WATCH OUT FOR AMISH BUGGIES! We can thank them for keeping the skies dark here! Phil

Attendance

Hello! I see the site says these run from Wednesday to Sunday. Is there any option to only attend one night of the star party? So if I could just come for Saturday night for example, that would be perfect! Thanks!

York Star Party registration

I registered online for the York County Star Party but did not see any confirmation that it was processed/received. Anyone have any comments on this? I have never attended this event. Do I just show up? I plan on camping over one night. Thanks.

Starstruck Newbie

Hi, I just started stargazing last fall. I'm with DVAA in Montgo county. We reserved space at Big Dipper Lodge at Cherry Springs and it was all ruined by rain & clouds. Now I'm thinking I should forget Cherry Springs and try for something more local, less expensive and if it gets ruined by rain, not as big of a deal. (still a big deal but not as much of a drive home.) How soon do I need to register for York County Star Party, or can I just show up at the last minute if weather looks good? What's the Bortle and humidity like at Susquehannock? I'd check it out but I don't think they normally have camping? Laura Todd

2024 Parties UPDATE
3
Hi Everyone! I have been updating the website, registration is now OPEN. I've working on some things and ideas since last year, and like everyone else, life happens here, too. I've invested in power options for the party, solar panels and batteries, and a small generator. This will be available for some limited recharging, but there is no AC power on site. I am planning to drive to the April 8 Eclipse centerline, possibly in Ohio. If anyone else is planning to witness it, perhaps you can mention your plans, or share a location to meet at. I may only go for the day, or possibly longer. I remember the traffic from the 2017 event, and I'm hopeful there are enough highways available so as not to repeat that experience to that degree. I hope to share any more information by the end of this weekend. Please be safe in your travels, and I hope to see many of you at the parties this year. As always, thank you for supporting this effort, I can't do this without your help, even if it is only to advertise it by word of mouth. And have a Happy St. Patrick's Day! Phil

Fall Star Parties in Southern Virginia
Hello all, I recently received an email asking to spread the word for a couple upcoming star parties in Southern Virginia. The first one in October is a bigger party (large field, electricity on field, low priced Cafe, showers, maybe up to 100 people usually) and the second one is smaller (no electric on field, no cafe, maybe 20 people). I go to SRSP twice annually and I've been to James River SP once. Both are great. Dark skies (I can see mag 12 in my simple 10 inch dob) and good people. So if you are looking to add more observing time, check these out, and let me know if you have questions (theastroranger@...): Two great star parties coming up at Dark Sky Parks in Virginia! Staunton River Star Party, October 9-15, Staunton River State Park (near South Boston, VA): There are not enough good words to describe this star party. The park staff does an incredible job by being extremely welcoming, super helpful, and treating us to the best star party food anywhere! Here is link to a video of a previous gathering if you want to experience it's sights and sounds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW9PLaVh258&t=152s NOTE: Registration closes October 1. Please be sure to pre-register as it helps the park purchase the right amount of the delicious food they provide. Registration can be done at this link: https://chaosastro.org/starparty-home/ If you want to just visit the astronomers and see the sights, you can attend on public night Friday, October 13 from 8 – 10 PM. You can also visit the park during the day on Saturday, October 14 and see a partial solar eclipse from about 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM in the company of knowledgeable astronomers with safe solar telescopes. James River Star Party, November 10-11, James River State Park (Buckingham County, VA): Enjoy beautiful dark skies in the mountains of Virginia! Astronomers are invited to set up and camp at the viewing site at no charge in return for sharing your knowledge with park visitors from 8 PM to 10 PM both nights of the star party. Camping is primitive but flush toilets are nearby. Electricity for battery charging is available at the nearby picnic shelter. Generators are not allowed. Although there is no fee, astronomers are required to pre-register by sending a message to president@.... Cabins and campsites elsewhere in the park are also available at their usual cost online through Reserve America: https://www.reserveamerica.com/.../jam.../VA/140189/overview

2023 AFTER PARTY THANKS AND THOUGHTS from PHIL
Wow what a year. Everything went so fast. Thank you Everyone for your support, and for enjoying yourselves at these parties. I was thrilled to see 4 clear nights and days allowing observing solar and nighttime observations most of the time. I have dates picked for 2024 to share with you, as well as some thoughts. 2024: Wednesday 10am (if needed to allow for lawn mowing)-Sunday noon June 5-9, new moon on the 6th. September 4-8 new moon on the 2nd (on Labor Day- events not allowed by the State Parks). I am planning to maintain a no-frills status but will no longer rent the pavilion. I will run a generator during the day to offer recharging power for those that need it, and if we need it for any impromptu activities. I will work on and finalize any additional amenities that can be offered next year, if any. Observing was the primary activity, as it should be, and I was very happy to see the amount of socializing amongst everyone, which is possible in a smaller star party. Most other activities that I have offered in the past were nice, but not necessities, and take additional time and work, which I've tried to do in the past. I am going to keep it simpler in the future, which will allow me to keep enjoying doing this star party in the future. On October 14 there is a partial solar eclipse viewable here. Next April 8 is the TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE, which I hope many of you can observe. I went to Athens, Tennessee for its twin in 2017, which was the first time I saw the corona. Stunning is the only word I can use to describe it. I might be in Ohio for this one. I wish everyone a safe holiday season, great shopping on the fall Amazon sale in about 3 weeks, and take advantage of clear skies whenever possible. Remember the important people in your lives. Thanks again, Everyone! It was a pleasure to see all of you! Phil

A big THANK YOU to Phil!
7
The YCSP is over for 2023 and I want to thank Phil for all the work he puts into this event. The field had many participants, but there was room for a lot more, so next year let's all talk it up and promote it to increase the number of people coming out from all the local clubs. I was only there Friday and Saturday nights. The sky Friday was excellent, an experienced observer and I were able to just pick out the 5th magnitude star in the little dipper, and the Milky Way was shining overhead. The sky Saturday evening had a few clouds but they cleared early. I didn't stay up late but certainly enjoyed the observing while I lasted. Thanks again Phil! The APM Binoculars

Hey Don, I'm thoroughly entranced by your binocs. Curious about a couple things. First, I believe you had the 45 degree angled eye binocs, correct? Second, what's your take on how high a magnification you can push that guy to? Best, Bill LightPollutionNews.com

FALL PARTY WITHIN 2 WEEKS!
13
Hello everyone! Wow, where did this summer go? I hope you all had a safe and fun summer! The September party is around the corner, and we have registrations coming in. It's less than 2 weeks away! REGISTER HERE NOW---> www.yorkcountystarparty.org I was contacted by DVAA members, who will now be holding their club party at the September party. Be sure to join us if you can! Meteor Man Dave Holden is planning to attend, driving in from West Virginia. He will be bringing his new line of meteor knives! I have been preparing to make some changes, like switching to gas stoves and griddles, and will make them available for use on site by attendees. With a Giant Supermarket 5 miles away in Buck, and ice available there, too, you will be able to pick up meals and supplies nearby. Bring a cooler, can opener, silverware, plates, towels, and a mug, and you can feast to your liking. I will also be able to provide hot water on site for coffee, tea, cocoa, oatmeal, etc. I'm also going to be testing making hot water for the showers, too (a work in progress). Please remember to bring the most important thing... You ! With your support, I can add the equipment that makes this one of the nicest and most accessible parties on the East Coast. Thank you all, I hope to see you there! Phil

I’d like to join you all for the Star Party. I have a 28ft travel trailer. Would there be space for me? Can I register when I arrive? Early afternoon on Wednesday. Thanks, Bruce

Are DOGS allowed?
A question today: Are DOGS allowed? The happy answer is YES THEY ARE! The rules are simple and common sense: In a nutshell, They must be leashed or under control at all times Clean up after them, bags may be available If they become a nuisance, time to leave Provide sufficient water at all times, there is a spigot for potable water near the pavilion and playground, and i think also in the RV lot. Please familiarize yourself with state park rules for pets before arriving. This is a beautiful park, there are several trails of varying difficulty, and take precautions for ticks or poison ivy. Trails are multi-purpose, used by hikers, bicycles, and horseback riding. Be alert for other park users, and share the trails with others. I hope you can attend, it’s a great place. At the very least, thanks for supporting the effort! Phil

Starfest 2023 help
5
Hi guys I'm with the Chesmont astronomical society and we are looking for help with our annual starfest held at Hopewell furnace near french creek state park on August 19 (rain date 20th) we are short on our ten objects row where scopes of different sizes focuses on different deep sky objects. If anyone is interested I can send what objects need to be covered and the best sized scope to cover them. I wanted to reach out to you because I came out to my first York Co star party back in June. Thank you for any help Clear skies Christa S.

Hi everyone! I will be posting a speaker page soon, two persons (besides me, lol) have committed to speaking this year. If anyone else is interested in speaking, please contact me asap. There are only a few slots left for Saturday afternoon. Registrations are still coming in, please consider supporting this event by attending and by spreading the word to clubs and newsletters by email or text. I will be posting more website updates soon, possibly a map/directions page, so please check back before the party. Thanks everyone! I'm looking forward to seeing you there! Phil

June party. June 14-18, 2023
Hello all! Currently we have a couple dozen people registered, which isn't bad for 2 weeks out, and this site has had a large number of walk-ins each year. I'm happy with this, and though I would like more, I'm looking forward more to enjoying the star party myself rather than hosting hundreds of attendees, which isn't really possible at this site. Please do spread the word, though. Having a larger attendance might make it possible to entice food vendors in the future. Thanks for supporting us! This is YOUR party! Phil
