Re: [YCSP] GOOD NEWS ABOUT CAMPING, CAMPERS, AND MOST TRAILERS - - YCSP and Susquehannock State Park
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks for the question, Roger!? Sorry if I didn¡¯t make it clear to everyone, I¡¯ve been working with the State Park people to address the details and get contracts and paperwork (and fees and expenses) started for this year (and laying the groundwork for next year and more!). ? To answer your question: cars, scopes, and lighter campers (single and double axel) ARE ALLOWED to be on the field together.? Restrictions only apply to heavy campers, RVs, and 5th wheelers.? ? This means that I will need some. ??I would like EVERYONE pulling a camper or trailer to send the make, model #, weight, length, # of axles to me. ?I can then plan out the spaces and we can save time at registration.? Larger heavier units may be directed to the hard-pack parking lot, but I will discuss this with any individual owners if I have concerns.? If damage occurs, I¡¯ll learn what the limits really are.? No one knows, and I don¡¯t want to find out the hard way. Short single axles under +/- 1200-1400 pounds like the Scamp caused no issues, and I doubt lighter double axles will be cause for concern.? This means that light double axles can be allowed on the field with car and scope¡ªI think Mr. Leuba¡¯s will be fine--- but may need to be strategically located fit in a space and to avoid blocking other¡¯s observing area, or if too long, the car parked elsewhere. ?We are going to play it by ear and learn together. ?? ? I am liable for any damages at my expense.? That said, there was no discernable damage on the field last year, even after 4 days of rain.? And those who owned heavy campers voluntarily stayed off the field. ? There are some other details I can elaborate on, but I will review my previous email and see what I included/excluded.? I hope to see Roger, Paul and others at the Memorial Day weekend event if they plan to attend this year¡¯s Black Forest Star Party, which shares our September dates.? You may like this spot, too. I have been slammed at work and other business, but hope to have the web pages updated soon. Phil ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Roger Borg via Groups.Io

Antares Rocket Launch visible in our area
Launch of Northrop Grumman¡¯s Antares rocket from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility near Chincoteague has been rescheduled for 3:43 pm on Friday, Feb. 14. This launch is expected to be visible along the East Coast all the way as far north as Connecticut. Weather for us expected to be cold but the launch can be viewed from any chosen spot from where you can see the unobstructed horizon in the direction of Wallops Island, VA. (Which is almost facing south for us in Philly). The map below is and gives visibility (for us) at +120 seconds after the launch. For more details click on the link.? CS Prasad |

HELLO ALL !
The registration page has been designed and made active, thanks to the efforts of BJ Gollatz, one of the members of the local club that has supported the star party for about 20 years. Each party is listed separately on the same page, and BJ referred to them as the May "Virgo Cluster Party" and the September "Andromeda Party" to distinguish registrations.? There are?3 reasons to register early: 1. There are a lot of expenses behind the scenes, so if you register, I can plan the budget better 2. There is a maximum size for attendance without ending up under trees, and I'm getting interest from people 2-4 hours away.? I have no idea how many this field can hold, but I will need go there (closer to spring!)?to check it out and possibly measure spaces for attendees to get an idea.? 3. If I can interest a food vendor for the Virgo Cluster party, it will help if they know they will have some customers.? Busy Bee already committed to the September party.? As an alternative, using the BBQ grills, driving?to area eateries,?or bringing camp stoves are welcome.? No open ground fires allowed. I will send a follow up to this email to help answer the most common questions, as we proceed to update the website ASAP.? Thanks everyone to?helping to keep YOUR party going all these years!? I'm looking forward to?seeing everyone again!? Stay tuned! Phil? |
HISTORY OF THE YCSP STAR PARTY
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHEELO ALL---- HISTORY OF THE YCSP STAR PARTY ¡ the star party MDSP, or Mason Dixon Star Party was started around 1989/1990 by the local York club at Spring County Valley Park, with the equestrian rings, near Glen Rock, PA, and until 6 years ago I had chaired it about half the years of its existence.? At that point, many of the club officers decided they wanted to stop supporting the star party, even though members were fine with having it.? Politics.? I went to my first in 1995 and don¡¯t think I missed any since then.? I have been bounced around by land owners for the last couple of years, trying to find darker skies and a cooperating land owner, and I am thrilled to be able to offer the DARKEST site that could support a party in this area. Please stay tuned for developments, things are being worked on in the background now. Busy Bee food vendor confirmed for the September party, but is unavailable for the Memorial Day event. Hi Roy...good to hear from you again...Hope you and Dee are doing fine...sounds so. Still using that beautiful "monster" scope I bet. I'm still imaging as always and trying to fill the void that losing the ECSP created. The YCSP is just about at the limit of how far I want to travel pulling the trailer. Hope I can make it this year and more. The James River SP is just getting it's feet wet too. They're in Buckingham county in Va. I was all hooked to the trailer and packed to go there last fall but a tornado wiped out their power the night before the SP was due to start...bummer! Re: 2020 Dates
Its too bad that the YCSP is on the same dates...? ?I know that my small group of 11 would have attended both, as Phil's party is always a topic of conversation and we all wished it would be in October.? Nevertheless, given the choice Cherry Springs wins out.
Hope its a nice week during both parties. -- Paul Leuba On 1/12/2020 1:10:37 PM, "stephen shearer" <sm.shearer.01@...> wrote: Paul, Thank you for the dates. For me, I have not been to BFSP.? I have been to the area/park -

Re: 2020 Dates
Glad to help. I am at Cherry Spring between 8-10 days at a time in and around the star party dates.? There are always around 100 or so astronomers there during this period.? The observing field swells to more then 400 during the star party.??
Long drive for me, too. I live in the Hunt Valley section of north central Baltimore county - about 20 miles due north of Baltimore.? But, I've done the drive so many times over the last 25 years that its become routine. -- Paul Leuba On 1/12/2020 1:10:37 PM, "stephen shearer" <sm.shearer.01@...> wrote: Paul, Thank you for the dates. #2020DATES
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Stu, Good to hear from you. ?Dee & I attended this SP last August ¨C it used to be the Mason Dixon SP, and is the closest one for us. ?It's now at a nice little state park, but the main road to the camping area and river overlook goes past the main observing field (baseball field) and parking lot (by the rest rooms, where heavy rigs like mine camp), so there could be a few headlights going by. ?I got SQM-L readings between 20.55 and 20.75, but light domes are surprisingly low (below the trees) especially given the proximity to cities. ?Also, we looked for available electrical outlets on the restroom building ¨C didn't find any. ?We're currently planning to attend again, both dates, so hope to see you there. No...I don't remember? the name of the SP but best I remember it was at a state park in Maryland. We (in the Chesapeake area) lost a long standing SP last year when the campgrounds (where it was held) ownership changed hands. Whether or not it will be returning is questionable as of now, so I'm "on the hunt" for another SP and this fits in perfectly (time wise) with the SRSP Stu On Sun, Jan 12, 2020 at 12:17 PM Prasad Agrahar via Groups.Io <ad_prasad=[email protected]> wrote:

Stu I checked. Apparently MDSP has been there for almost 30 years now. This year, I believe, will be the 30th. Phil will correct me if I am wrong. I have been attending since 2011.? Prasad

YCSP is not a newly started SP. It has been around for many years now, though this location -Susquehannock State Park is just one year old to YCSP. It was previously known by name MDSP and the name was changed to YCSP about five years ago.?? Prasad AB3EH
