Re: Newbie questions about park

Hi Laura, thanks for your question.
While there won't be food trucks at this party, there are at least a dozen eateries within 10-15 miles of our location, and a Giant supermarket 5 miles east in the crossroads of Buck.
I've posted much of the basic info on the event website, at
Please be sure to look at all the pages, including the links to state park rules and star party etiquette.
And the weather is still looking good...
Welcome aboard!
Phil

Hi, I've never been to the Star Party so I would like to know what to expect. Are there food trucks?

Re: Current forecast for YCSP

Hi Laura,
I've requested for variances before, including early arrivals and extensions to stay later, as well as impromptu evenings, and met a brick wall, unless it was a group in a group campsite (which are in the woods).

Wednesday & Thursday look like good nights. The rest...meh.
Any chance they'd let us show up Wednesday night?

They call it weather, because they don’t know “weather” it will rain or not!

Clear skies all!

I guess we'll just need to see how the weather develops - the Meteoblue forecast that I posted here looks best for Friday and Saturday, that's when I hope to attend.

Mid-Atlantic amateur astronomers, we have a weird 'it might clear up' ALL the time.

In the blog post added a list of thing I'm personally going to look for with Binoculars and a Telescope.
And I added a link to a PDF (and the edible?ODS spreadsheet) of things throughout the year I hope to check off as the seasons progress.

I made a quick post on my informal blog with more links, and I'll add stuff as we get closer

Re: Newbie questions about park

Awesome,? thanks,? we worked on a list of binocular objectives as well as easier telescope objects.? I'll add those lists later this week.? I always need to remind myself what to look for that's harder to see.

Re: Newbie questions about park

The blog post was VERY helpful!

Thanks

Re: Newbie questions about park

It's been a few years myself that I've been to a sky show, and was able to go to the one with this group earlier this year so I can give my impressions (VERY positive)

We will be camping in the field (if you are camping, some people come by just for the night time viewing)

so if you are camping, just all the normals of camping, bring breakfast, lunch/dinner with your stove or ambient temperature or a small cooler if you?are familiar with that.

The sky viewing starts around sunset, so either a chair, or nice picnic blanket for watching yourself, and there are telescopes around that people share, aiming them at deep sky objects. (Galaxies, clusters of stars, blown up stars, planets)? Saturn will be visible, with it's attendant moons, and Neptune and Uranus a little later in the evening.? Earlier this year we lucked into a lunar occultation (stars getting blocked by the moving Moon), and even saw a SpaceX launch?to main engine shutoff.

I haven't seen food trucks at this site, don't think any are planned so bring food and snacks to leave in car.

Have hat, coat, gloves, warm layers, it will get cool overnight.? I always put on long sleeve shirt, long pants, boots to keep warm, to extend how long I can look for things in the sky.

If you happen to have a planesphere, bring that, to get oriented to the sky.? I'll bring a laser to point out constellations and things.? If you have binoculars bring that. I made a device to help people new to binoculars, be able to follow the green-line to center interesting things so we can all see them together.

Here is a link for the forecast cloud cover:

and here is a link for satellite passes (will get more accurate as we get closer to the weekend)

Re: 2024 FALL PARTY DATES

Hi Tanega,
The answer is yes to both questions, as long as they are under control (leashed, quiet, and friendly).

Great trails to walk them, too.
Thanks for the question, and welcome aboard!

Question for people that might know..? I think dogs are allowed in the park.?

But are they allowed to stay overnight with us in the park in our tents?

Hello everybody!

It takes a lot of prep to pull off, and I always enjoy and appreciate everyone's participation, but especially that everyone makes this a fun event.

I want to provide current thoughts about the fall party briefly.? so here I go...
September dates were unavailable because of an unknow conflict at the park.? October new moon is October 2, so I am looking at?October 3-6, Thursday to Sunday, as the most sensible time to request from the park supervisor? Yes, it's a day shorter, because I have commitments the week before the party that need to be kept.? Expenses don't really change, so the fees will be the same, unless I am off in my estimates are off.

As soon as I get a reply from the supervisor, I will announce it and activate the registration page.??

After a successful use of the new solar equipment, I want to state?there is sufficient power for recharging?phones, lights, and some computers, and if necessary, even some battery packs with the use of a small generator.? If you have solar, bring it along.? I have a screen room and table I set up to shade batteries and phones.

While I can't promise the weather, but given what we've experienced so far this year, and the one October party I had in 2021, there is a good chance camping might be more comfortable beginning of October, and the nights are longer, so be prepared for cool nights.

Hi everyone!? FYI, registrations are good at this point, with about six weeks to go.? Just enough for a small party, and registrations usually increase exponentially the closer we get.

That said, there's still plenty of room, and I believe a bit more, the merrier!
