Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft NEW MODEL AIRCRAFT FROM X-AIR

Tony Stiller

I for one am most interested in this model for the following reasons:
1. engine up front allowing for a greater variation of engines without affecting the thrust line and the need for modification
2. seating looks to be raised allowing for the knees to bend resulting in more comfort
3. depending on where the wings struts are located, it should provide easier access into and out of the aircraft, a problem some people find with the present models
4. the shape looks more like a "real aircraft" if I can use this term which should appeal to more people who at times look at the current model as being a toy
5. to overcome the 51% rule, could contact be made with the factory to have modifications to the frame so that Australians can do more of the construction without compromising the airworthiness of the aircraft
6. would it be possible for the factory to contact the AUF to see they new model fits the 51% rule before we import into Australia
cheers
Tony

We have been following this aircraft for over 18 months now, and up until recently i thought it was 'Top Secret', but when an image was put up publicly on Raj Hansa's web site i thought maybe we could get some feedback from the group members on what they thought of this new design.

Comments anyone ??

I really believe it's a winner, it may even take over in popularity from the standard X-Air in Australia. I have heard the fuselage structure is completed in about one hour !!. Hope she will still fit into the 51% rule though.

I await your feedback and comments .? Thanks Michael

We have the Standard X-Air model, we have the "F" (Flaps) model and now we have the latest offering from the factory.

There have been a few pictures floating around for a while and i am trying to find out more details as i write, but so far no luck.

She will run on 912 or Jabiru type engines and offers a much bigger entry than the standard X-Air's, looking closely you can see a lot of shared fittings (like the fuel tanks) which, i expect will make the final cost reasonable.

I will keep digging for more information on this exciting addition and pass it on as it becomes available.

Re dash installation

Michael & Jackie Thorn

Hi its Michael T ,just thought I would put in my 2c worth (Xair 3285 TTIS 8 hrs !)
Before installing the instruments I spread them out on a blanket to see what effect each instrument had on the compass.? I found the EGT & CHT gauges had a large effect within 20 cm and the tacho had a small effect at 10 cm.
In light of this I installed the compass to the left of the dash then working right the slip/skid (all plastic) ,tacho ,ASI ALT in the center ,CHT & EGT to the right of center and volts and hours along the bottom right.
This may be unconventional but I think it looks good and others do to ! Nav can be complicated enough without having to add in a large compass correction.
Cheers.

Choke knob mounting position

Attached is our preferred position to mount the choke lever, I find the
factory recommended position hits my leg as i seem to fly with my knees
apart (as most guys do).

Only problem with this location (which i really think is a better spot)
is that you need to extend the choke cable outer to 1110 mm long, all i
do is discard the factory supplied outer and replace the outer with a
new one from a bike shop cut to the right length.

I hope this tip helps.

Regards Michael X-Air Australia

Radiator Tube Rubbing

We have found on several 618's that the tube which connects both
radiators has been rubbing on the base of the gearbox, i am using the
factory supplied fuel hose to shield the tube from damage, just cut it
to length and split it down the middle and hold on with cable ties.

Fuel Primer Bulb and Filter

Attached is a picture of the fuel primer bulb and filter, we locate ours
in the cockpit of the aircraft so we can keep a close visual on the
filter condition.

Thanks Michael X-Air Australia

Mounting the muffler

Attached are some pictures of mounting the Rotax 618 wrap around
muffler. Note: we have moved the standard muffler post and bracket and
the back muffler post has been shortened 80mm.

Regards Michael X-Air Australia

Fuel Tube at Engine

Attached is a picture of the fuel hose at the engine, we wrap all our
tube in "Corrugated Tube" to help stop icing and other fatigue, i have
found this product to be very durable, and it's cheap to buy.

Regards Michael X-Air Australia

Correct way to mount Bungee cord

Attached is the correct way to route the bungee cord around the Elevator
Post Assembly, the other end attaches to the main Elevator Tube.

Regards Michael X-Air Australia

Drilling the Horizontal Stabiliser

A Quick tip when drilling the Horizontal Stabiliser is to do the following.

Make sure the horizontal Stabiliser support bar is firmly placed on the bracket and pushed all the way on until it stops, Important.... check that it aligns with the attach bracket at the base of the Vertical Stabiliser Post, if it's out and you drill the part your in trouble !!.

When everything is on and aligned properly center punch the bracket as shown in the attached photograph and carefully drill the hole making sure the drill is horizontal !! (Picture attached showing the wrong angle) A few customers have drilled the bracket at an angle as shown in the attached picture and the end up stuffing the support tube. Get a friend to look from the side and make sure you are drilling straight before you exit the other side.

Thanks Michael? X-Air Australia

Fuel System Questions

Here we go again..... I keep getting questions on the fuel drain system so i have attached a couple of photographs to explain what we do.

Firstly we get some nipples made to screw into the bottom of the fuel tanks; they connect together via a common tee piece which drains the tank sumps of any contaminants.

The standard tube which connects the two tanks together we replace with Heavy Duty Fuel Hose similar to what they use at petrol stations. These are clamped to the fuel tubes with super clamps and we use a special joining paste (fuel rated) to make sure everything is sealed really well without any leaks.

The tee piece and Curtis Drain Valve can either be held in place with a stainless steel bracket or as we do with cable ties. The drain protrudes just outside the fastback and can be drained by hand or with a normal fuel sampler, the drain is protected from rocks and debris flicked up from the front wheel by the bracket in front of it which holds the suspension arms.

Same as above but pictures added

A wide entry option is now available for X-air. The cost is around $300
AU$ plus freight and GST

With this option the pod, wind screen & front roll bar must be cut and
reshaped and the normal Lexan door doesn't fit.

This option is ideal for disabled pilots or older pilots who may have
trouble with the normal access to the aircraft. Delivery is about three
weeks.

Hi Ted,
this is an Xair Site, however discusion on props, motors or any
general info related to flying would be welcome.

I hire the Bantam regularly here in Queensland whilst I make up my
mind of what to buy. I have had a fly of the Xair, flightstar, skyboy
and they all possess qualities you like.

You buy a Certified Ultralight and it has certain advantages, you
build an ultralight and you gain the experience of knowing how its
put
together and what to do and look out for as time goes on re
maintenace
and replacement.

Cheers Peter
