Re: Will The Buddistick Portable Antenna Kit Work With The X5105 and Tuning / Coax Connectors Enquiry

You would need a connector adapter, an "SO-239-to-BNC male" one (if you are saying that the antenna has a PL259 connector).? With that adapter at the antenna, then you could buy a coax cable with BNC connectors at each end.? If the antenna has a BNC, then all you need is coax with a BNC at each end.

the Buddistick will be tunable to the frequency you want.? It will probably not cover the whole band without retuning.? The X5105's tuner will help make more of the band useable without re-adjusting the antenna.? The radio's SWR sweep analysis/graph function will show you the antenna's resonant frequency.? Then you can adjust the antenna and re-test until it is tuned to your desired frequency.

Re: New Project

Finally got a chance to test out this new project and the results are absolutely amazing. The Christman phasing system can be a big advantage for QRP stations. I plan to build a a smaller version of this Cir easier portable use in the field.?

Re: X5105 Power Supply - Charger Issue Resolved

Top Hat,

you have a couple of easy options for field powering/recharging for the X5105.
1)? Use a portable battery in conjunction with the internal battery.? Most folks who use this option run off the external battery until it will no longer sufficiently power the radio, then switch over to the internal battery to finish off their deployment.
2)? Use a 60W or more solar panel with a charge controller.? This one is more expensive but it allows the use of the radio for longer periods if the sun is out.?

Once you get the chance to work with it you will be impressed by how long the internal battery can last out in the field or portable.?

Will The Buddistick Portable Antenna Kit Work With The X5105 and Tuning / Coax Connectors Enquiry

TopHat

I have taken the liberty of ordering the BUDDISTICK Portable Antenna Kit and plan to try this out with the X5105, to listen only as I¡¯m not licensed yet.?

Ive noticed an excellent You Tube Video detailing the Buddistick set up and wondered if anyone who has experience ?could advise me on the correct Coax connections needed. I understand from the video that a PL259 BNC Adapter was utilised from the antenna plate, and am wondering how to order the right connectors for the coax to the unit.?

As the X5105 has a tuner will it have any problems tuning in the Buddistick Antenna with SWR.?

Hope we you guys can help. Many thanks.?

X5105 Power Supply - Charger Issue Resolved

TopHat

I purchased a (Regulated 13.8V 5A Base Station Power Supply) from Amazon UK. 240V In and 13.8V 5A Out to the X5105. Unit charges fine. Used the red and black leads from the cable supplied, connected to the base station Red to Red, Black to Black and it works.?

Now I have to figure out powering the unit when I¡¯m out. ?Any ideas would be welcomed ?

Re: New Project

I¡¯m on an iPhone. I just take a pic and post it to the server. I¡¯m not emailing it to anyone. The server here is hosting it. If I was on a dial up 56k, I would just set my email options to just receive a daily summery of post to the group, just common courtesy to average internet speed users. And I don¡¯t have any UHF/VHF antennas. I stopped using 2 meters because it¡¯s got to many complainers, at least around here.?

Re: New Project

I normally get 50-100 emails a day and rarely do they go over 1 or 2 MB's in size.? Most average around 100 KB.?? But that one with your 7 or 8 photos was 25 MB.? I receive email via a radio tower as there is no fiber optic service out here in the rural area.? It takes a while to download that much.? I learned a long time ago to compress my JPEG photos to cut down sending as well as receiving emails.? I started that in the 90's when most of us were on dial up services and continue to do it since some of us do not high speed connections.? It's like when I work a 2 meter repeater.? I don't use 50 watts to hit a repeater when I know I can do it with 5 watts.

The email you just sent before this one was 5.7 MB, but with compression, it could have been around 500 KB or less.? It's just common communication courtesy.

Re: New Project

W8SWL,
your not actually set up to receive the entire groups emails and photos to your limited space email address are you?

I belong to 4 groups on here and I rarely post, however, some of the groups send out many emails like the SKCC (Street Key Century Club) send out somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 emails a day with many attachments of keyers. It¡¯s probably easier for you, the individual to limit your email Preferences then to expect an entire group to limit the content they are posting. The group admins can also set the attachment limits and file size if they don¡¯t want members posting media content.?

Re: New Project

My phased array system is almost complete, just need to order 2 male and 2 female 3 prong panel connector/plugs.?

this will be for the house and I will be able to phase 2 verticals for end firing to the east or west or broadside to the north and south.?

after I complete this project, I will make a very small and light weight portable QRP version so I can put my 5W and ears where I want at the flick of a switch.?

il updated this thread to report the results once I have complete the projects and collect some data from the field.?

Re: New Project

KG2RG,

In the future please compress your photos before sending.?? I have a limited mailbox and your 25mb? sized e-mail put me over the top last night.? There are ways to reduce JPGs to a few hundred kb rather than several mb sized.

Thanks and 73,? Don

Hello to my X5015 QRP portable family,?

I have not checked in for a while and thought I¡¯d stop in, say hello and give a report on the projects completed and current projects.?

The 1/2 wave end fed is my favorite portable antenna. I make 2 versions. version 1 is rugged, using a ft140-43 and 14 gave flex weave.?

Version 2 is using a small FT50-43. I have not paired it up with wire yet, but planning on something super light but with some quality.?

anyway, now I¡¯m working on phase array. I¡¯m going to start off with 20 meter and if that goes well, I¡¯ll possible upscale to a 40 meter and an 80 meter version. So far I have the 71¡ã Delay line and the two 84¡ã Lines cut and tuned to 0 reactance. Now I¡¯m building the relay box. I have the 5 SO239 connectors installed and all the shields connected together. I just need to wire up the 2 relays and and then I¡¯ll build the control box. Eventually this 2 vertical phased array should be both end firing and broadside with 4 directions.?

as for the verticals:
most hams using this system are running 1/4 wave verticals with 1/4 wave spacing. However, I plan to try using 2 end fed 1/2 waves with 1/4 wave spacing.?

So, keeping busy here and sometimes finding time to actually get on the air and rag chew with friends or chase DX. I¡¯m just waiting for the warmer weather and then I¡¯ll be out there with the XYL on our tandem bicycle and operating during our out of saddle time.?

Re: New Project

Yeah sure!
the FT140-43 toroid is great for QRP. It¡¯s important to note that the random wire end fed and the 1/2 wave end fed are 2 completely different ant. The Random wire uses a 9:1 unun and you do not use a FT140-43. The 1/2 wave end fed is a 1/2 wave length wire, fed at the end and the impedance is somewhere in the range of 2200 to 3100 ohms. Different bands, material, environment are some factors to why the impedance at the end feedpoint varies, but it¡¯s within a small window.?

I originally tried a 49:1 unun but bit better results with a 64:1 unun with the materials I use, and the bands I operate on, 20m and lower. The 49:1 is 2 primaries and a total of 14 turns. 2 and 14 is a 7:1 ratio. Square the 7 and it¡¯s 49. 1 is your 50 ohms. 50 ohms x 49 equals 2450 ohms. So a 49:1 transforms 2450 ohms down to 50 ohms.?

My antenna were reading a higher impedance at the feedpoint and I needed more transformation, so I tried a 64:1. On some bands, this is perfect, on others, it¡¯s a little to much, but still closer then the 49:1 and I get higher/better return loss and I¡¯m closer to 0 reactance on my design frequencies, usually aiming for the center of the band.?

The 64:1 unun is 3 primaries and a total of 24 turns. I crossover from one side of the toroid after turn 12, and turn 13 starts the other side as I work my way to end turn 24 at the far side of the toroid.?

I¡¯m using 18 gage magnet wire. for winding and 14 gage flex weave for ant wire ?

please note that the image is of a 64:1 on a larger FT240-43 toroid and is jest better for viewing the windings.?

N6MTT. Mike, I have a x5105 and where on the menu do you turn off the charger and run straight AC, Thanks? Larry AI9N. Forgot, what can happen to the rig if transmitting with the charger on and running?

Hello everyone, (first post here)

I use the powerseed charger that DougVL recommended in his older post and it works great. You might find a similar spec on a power supply with a plug more suited for the UK.

Just be sure to turn the charger?off?before you transmit. I usually keep a good charge on my x5105, turn the charger off, and just run via AC (plugged in) or on battery. The battery life is great. I monitored FT8 on 20m all morning - transmitting a several times - and it is nearly full.

Re: FT8 cable - $15 on ebay

Doug,

I just bought some cables from Denis @ Digirig?

They work for the x5105 as well as the G90. I also got the Digirig itself as the CE-19 was just too wonky for me. The cables and digirig are pretty compact and I will be bringing them camping with me at the end of the month.

I like that it works with multiple brands of radios - just in case another radio follows me home.

Denis was super awesome and reached out to me to see how everything went after I ordered. I'm a new ham and he helped me with a few of my problems. Like my high SWR cutting my FT8 transmissions (I have my x5105 set to limit power to 2.5:1 SWR - I'd love input on this BTW ...should it be lower?), helping my configure omnirig, etc..? I'm running 5 watts from my apartment deck and hitting the east coast with a homebrew 49:1 balun with about 25' of wire in an inverted U shape, tuned with a nanoVNA.

Here is a photo of my setup!??

Best of luck!

The X5105 only needs about 600-700 mA for charging at approx 13.8V.
I posted this a few weeks ago
The 6 amps is for when you transmit !

Rick,

At first this seems like a cheap shortcut. However, it gives a lot of flexibility. For example, in addition to what Doug and others have said. You can use a solar panel to charge the built in battery.

Also remember that you have a menu option that turns charging on or off. Just because you have the power cord plugged in does not mean the radio battery is charging.
