It seems that pretty much all "modern" microphones are the 'electret condenser' type, which require a DC bias voltage.? The bias typically seems to be 8 volts, at least in ham equipment, but cell phones also use electrets and they don't (normally?} have more than 4 volts available.
The Icom 8 V. mic bias supply is reportedly easy to damage by accidentally shorting to ground.? That may be the cause for some reported compatibility failures.? I also have an IC-706 and have compared the connector pinouts with the X5105.? They do look like they're compatible, but group members have tried and said that they don't work.? I looked into the mic wiring seriously because I want to try using a headset with mic on the X5105.? So far, though, no luck at finding a tested method.
