Re: Receive audio quality

I also found the audio amplifier built into the 5105 is easily overdriven and causes distortion which makes the audio sound a lot worse than what it¡¯s actually receiving.? What I¡¯ve done to fix this is get a real cheap battery operated Bluetooth speaker which has an audio input Jack.? Walmart had one for about $10.? The key is to keep the volume on the 5105 below 50% and use the amp on the Bluetooth speaker to drive volume.? If you do this it will sound like a brand new radio.

Thanks for the tips. This one is running 1.04. I will do the upgrade when I get a chance. I really like my old Ten Tec R4030 (Youkits rebranded) but I had heard how great the tuner worked. Hopefully the upgrade will give more options?

Hi John,

?

Bought mine new from MFJ with Ver 3.0 FW. I am a strictly CW operator, with a few listens on SSB. For CW, I have found that by optimizing the filter/audio features, I get awesome reception with noisy or QRM condx, as follows:

?

  • DSP-FLT, leave ON and carefully set the H_CUT and L_CUT freqs for your ear. This makes a huge difference. I use L_CUT 300 and H_CUT 1000
  • NR, leave ON as it removes most local QRN/ignition type noise.
  • NOTCH, leave ON and carefully set the CNT and BW settings for your ear. I use CNT 700 and BW 100.
  • EQ, leave ON and carefully adjust the BASS, MEDI, and TREB. I use BASS 0, MEDI +6, TREB +3.
  • I also use a homebrew speaker/amp with tuned-stereo ports (PVC pipe extensions over speakers), as pictured. Ports are optimized for audio BW 300 ¨C 2000Hz. With the volume just cracked open I can fill the room with an 600 ¨C 900Hz CW tone and NO QRM/QRN. Not sure how well this works in SSB.

?

My technique is to leave everything off and monitor until I engage a QSO and than enable everything, including using RIT, until I get a comfortable listen. I hope this helps.

Subject: [X5105-Users] Receive audio quality

?

I just got a X5105 and have heard comments about audio being tedious listening with headphones. I have not tried a good external speaker but have tried two pair of headphones and am very disappointed in audio for ssb. Cw seems ok. Playing with AGC helps some but still seems terrible. Even the cheap ubitx blows it away for audio that is more understandable. I guess it is what it is. This one needs a fw upgrade when I get a cable. Maybe that will help some. Intelligibility is rough in noisy conditions. Anyone have similar issues?

Replacement Battery Post #battery

I saw this article the other day and wanted to share it in the event anyone is looking to replace the battery in their X5105.

For those in the UK:??

This is a Swedish battery company:??

Ver 1.0.4

I don¡¯t see the gray highlight over the digit on the screen for selecting tuning rate. I press the arrows and the tuning rate changes but it doesn¡¯t display the block over tens of khz or ones of khz etc. I don¡¯t see a contrast adjustment in the menus just brightness. Maybe the contrast setting is preventing it displaying. Is this just how the old fw works or is it a hidden setting?

Re: New member firmware question

Edited

Get the usb to serial cable with a FTDI chip. ?If you plan to use the radio for ten and six meter FM repeaters then avoid V3 because you will lose the CTCSS codes. ?Otherwise it¡¯s worth the update in my opinion. ?There was an update that made you use a button on the mic to send a saved message but it¡¯s fixed in the last release.

Re: 1/8 plug cables for paddles

Recommend a USB cable with the FTDI chip.

The used unit I got came without cables and it looks like they are non standard plugs with a smaller part to fit the jack. Where is a good place to get those along with the usb cable for fw?

Re: New member firmware question

73?

I changed several times firmware?for comparison .. my opinion V3 is little better in RX. Menu and display more practical.
I solved?defective/delayed cw monitor with one external cw-keyer with small piezo speeker.? CW monitor on X5105?is reduced to zero.
small external cw-keyer has also two simple memory..?

New member firmware question

How worthwhile is ver 3 firmware ? I just got a slightly used X5105 with 1.04? firmware. Recommended usb to serial adapter? The previous owner couldn¡¯t find it. I just got it charged and have only had time to receive a little. Receive seems somewhat noisy and rough. Just trying to get familiar with it now. I have heard later fw versions made cw message memories harder to use.

That's a known problem with the X5105.? I had to remove a small amount of plastic around the metal shell of the DIN connector in order to make the connection to the radio work.
Some time back, I saw a web posting about this, with pictures.? It seems like there was a company selling a better DIN connector (or DIN cable) for use with the X5105.? The X5105's DIN connector is set deeper into the radio "body" or chassis than normal.

Xiegu X5105 XCVR questions, auto memory keyer function not working and intermittent PTT

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I just found this group and have some questions about my X5105.

?

I got my unit via MFJ in late 2020 and have made 430 CW QSOs with it. It is a FW V3.0 unit. I have the following issues, to date.

Issues:

?

Auto memory Keyer: I have followed the below instructions exactly, numerous times and the internal keyer never transmits. I can, however, decode CW via the CWDEM mode nicely. Here are the instructions to load and send:

?

To configure the 10 CW memory messages:

  • Go to Menu 3 by pressing the MENU button until 3 appears beneath the power meter on the display.
  • Hit MSG
  • Select MSG number with VFO (Tuning Knob)
  • Press the EDIT button
  • Scroll through letters / numbers with the VFO and hit INS for each selection
  • When letter/number selections are complete,? press SAVE
  • Repeat for each custom message and when done, hit QUIT

?

To play the 10 CW preset messages:

  • Go to Menu 5 by pressing the MENU button until 5 appears beneath the power meter on the display.
  • Select DIGI
  • Select CWDEM from mode choices (leftmost button in menu 5) by pressing the button until CWDEM appears
  • Repeatedly hit MSG to select specific message number
  • Press PTT on body of rig or perhaps press PTT on mic. This will send the selected message one time.
  • To exit, hit MENU for other menu selections

?

In CW mode, the PTT function does not always trigger whether I use the:

  • PTT button on the radio.
  • PTT button on the mic.
  • External PTT input signal via the Accessory jack.
  • Whether I have the PTT software setting to Normal or Toggle.

I noticed that the intermittency it is associated with the battery charging function. These are the behaviors:

  • The PTT will always trigger properly if I have no DC Charger plugged into the External Power jack.
  • The PTT will intermittently trigger if a DC Charger is plugged in and the charge voltage is below 13VDC.
  • The PTT will trigger almost never if a DC Charger is plugged in and the charge voltage is above 13VDC.

With these symptoms/conditions, I am wondering if I have a ground differential issue?

I use a 12VDC car battery to power the transceiver and other accessories, a separate Li-Ion battery pack for the keyer, and a separate NiCAD battery pack for the external audio filter/amplifier. I could use a single supply for everything but the wiring changes in my shack are not easy.

?

Has anyone seen these anomalies and can offer any suggestions?

Re: Tried to upgrade firmware and radio is bricked. Anyone know how to JTAG this to get it running again?

Try asking for help at Radioddity, the main U.S. seller.? They have pretty good support for the radio.

Re: Tried to upgrade firmware and radio is bricked. Anyone know how to JTAG this to get it running again?

Hi, did you figure this out?? i have the same exact problem.? I had to build a serial/usb device to connect to the radio but have to hold down the power button.? no banana.?

Re: Tried to upgrade firmware and radio is bricked. Anyone know how to JTAG this to get it running again?

Hi there.? I tried to update my firmware and the USB/serial dongle melted.? now the unit will not power up unless i press the two menu buttons and power, then release the menu buttons and continue to hold the power down.? it only deletes the firmware but will not stay powered up unless i hold the power button down.? If i just press the power button and release i get a flash on the three LED's thats it.?

i have tried multiple version of firmware but no change.?

?

any direction on this would be greatly appreciated.? There is very little troubleshooting or information in this area.?

Re: Any FirmWare updates in the future?

Bob Dianetti

As much as I'd like a firmware update, I'm finding the radio complete and working well with the current version.? Can't think of anything to fix.? So whether or not there is one I don't think is all that important - at least to me.?

Re: how to make PTT

Great work, Michael!? Thank you very much.? This confirmation of the pin 3 to pin 7 "ground jumper" will be a big help.
