Pollack & Schmidt la silencieuuse won't pick up the lower thread
5
do you know this machine.? it seems it is a german, european, clone of a wheeler and wilson 3 that is very rare in italy. circa 1880, 82, it seems to me. I found that in a flea market, no instructions, although amazon(!) sell them, some years ago. However, it seems nearly identical to the ww #3. I want see if someone can help me. my problem is that: this lady won't pickup the lower thread, It seems complete, no broken or missing parts, and I searched to clean it from its old dirtyness in best way. It runs freely Yesterday I saw that someone here said that the needle might be too low. I looked at my needle, and in effest only a little piece, 2, 3mm. of its 'head'came out from the needle holder and I picked up that circa 3 mm: I tried many times, 2,5 3, 3,5, 4 mm. nothing! but only the first time the upper thread was nearly up.. all entangled into the bobbin case Many times both thread entangle, sometime the upper one went out all alone from the hole. the shape of the needle-hole is identical than ww3 one it has the shape of number 8. (why this curious shape?) the bobbin case is very similar to that of ww 3.... the tension seems intactis. Is the tension very important for picking up the upper thread? Who put my needle so low, when and why. it seemed in that position from many many years. tonight I have only a photo. I search to post it, I wait for your thoughts

Welcome

Thanks for welcoming me to the group! My husband & I live in Cornwall PA. We collect old sewing machines - treadles, handcranks, old electrics - and finally acquired a Wheeler & Wilson #9 treadle in working condition, with extra bobbins & a few attachments, and I'm hoping to learn more about it. I'll post pix when I can unearth it from the pile of my husband's bubble wrap stash (eBay packaging)! Kathy R

Introduction

Hi, all. My name is Marty and I am delighted, at Miller's suggestion, to join this group of Wheeler and Wilson sewing machine enthousiasts. I live in South Louisiana and my wife has been quilting since junior high. About 20 years ago, as a result of visiting numerous quilt shops, I became a vintage sewing machine collector. My wife has put up with this hobby, provided I assist her with quilting, which I have been happy to do. It wasn't long after I started my new collection that I became fascinated with the early technological superiority of the rotating hook of the various Wheeler and Wilson sewing machines. Today I have about 10 of these machines, including a no. 8 hand crank in wooden carrying case, 2 no. 9 hand cranks in wooden carrying cases, a no. 9 short arm hand crank, 2 or 3 electrified no. 9s, a no. 12 industrial, a no. 15 industrial, 2 or 3 Singer 9Ws, and a Jones Spool W&W clone. After I have become more familiar with this group and its photo archives, I will dig out some of my W&W machines and try to post pictures and serial numbers. If any members are particularly interested in any of the above-mentioned machines, let me know and I will try to answer the question or post a responsive photo. I do not have many W&W attachments, but I do have a metal W&W attachment box and a fancy wooden W&W needle tube. Regards, Marty

D9

Hello from South Jersey! A very worn D9 is moving in with me. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions once I get her home. What should I know about this Wheeler and Wilson model? Are parts easy to find? TIA for all your advice. I'm not sure what I'm getting into.... had sworn that I was done with any machine in a cabinet and yet, another one is slipping in my home. Mercy! Kathy ¡®May the source of strength, who¡¯s blessed the ones before us, help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing.¡¯

Wheeler & Wilson No. 1 Treadle Top
Hi, moving along with restoration of the treadle table for my No.1 and have hit a slight problem. Started this project several years back and had to put it on hold till now - during that time I managed to lose my template for the belt holes in the top. Easy enough to get the side to side placement, but need to get the diameters of the holes and the position front to back. Much appreciated if someone could have a measure on their machine. Thanks Ian

New to me no 8
2
Hi! I will be uploading pictures to Flickr soon but I just got a Wheeler &Wilson no. 8 that is dated 1880. I got it for 20 dollars, it's in good condition with table, 3 bobbins and attachments. What are some substitutes for the needles? I've seen varying opinions. Super excited about this! When I lived in Oregon I had a head but never used it and it was one of the machines I regretted selling.

group storage limit has been reached
9
I've changed the Subject on this thread to better reflect what we're talking about. Summary: - We've exhausted our storage space on groups.io. We're allowed 1GB (without paying for more), and we've used over 1.3GB. (They clearly have a very generous "slop" factor.) - There's a way to limit the size of uploaded photos, and Miller has now turned this on (uploads are now reduced to a max of 1024x1024), but it only affects photos as they're uploaded. There's no way to resize a photo that's already on the site. (The forum author has a "todo" item in their bug tracking system to fix this lack.) - The only way to resize photos is to download them, re-upload them, and then delete the original. The site moderators/owners (i.e., Miller, Helen, and I) have the ability do this for any photo, but the original ownership of the photo will be lost, as well as the original upload date. Regardless, I'm sure I speak for all three of us in saying that we don't really have time to or energy to do that for all of the photos. As one example of probably many hundreds, this photo of a bobbin and holder, uploaded by Dean, currently takes 3.5MB: /g/Wheeler_and_Wilson-Sewing-Machines/photo/273/0?p=Created,,,20,2,0,0 If I download it, and then resize it to a maximum of 1024x1024, it takes about a tenth of that space, just 0.36MB bytes. We could just start paying for more storage ($220/year would buy us 10G of storage), and if we "took up a collection" we could probably raise the money fairly quickly -- the group has 380 members. But we'd have to raise the money again next year, and the year after... so let's not go there yet. I'll experiment with downloading/re-uploading some photos, just to see how much of a pain it is. I'll report back. paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 45.9 degrees)

#introduction
Hello All! My husband and I bought an old Singer treadle table about 15 years ago, promptly took the "pretty but non-motorized" machine head out and put an Singer 66 in it (putting the treadle head in the 66's box to keep it safe). We're in N. California, and after the recent antics of our gas & electric provider, began thinking about that old treadle head and decided it might be nice (and prudent) to get the old girl hooked backed up! The serial number initially threw us off, but we finally discovered that she's a Singer 9w7. She seems to be in pretty decent shape, considering her age. We're planning on spending some time cleaning her up (and the table too) after the holidays. She's really lovely and deserves to be put back in action. Really glad to have found this group! We're looking forward to learning more about her and getting her working again! Cheers! Stephanie

#9 Manual
9
Hi All;
I have posted a scan of an original W&W #9 manual to the files section. It will be found in a folder of that name. I had merged all the files into a single PDF file. When I went to post it it occurred to me it might actually be best to post the individual scans as PDF's. This will allow you if you desire to print it out to pairing up the pages & by printing to both sides it can be arranged in book form as was the original.

D-9 Parts Machine or Refurbish Job for Someone
8
Hi, I bought a Wheeler and Wilson D-9 a few years ago, thinking my mechanical-engineer husband might enjoy overseeing/helping me restore it. Much as he loves me, my questions and requests for help were an interruption and bore to him, so I finally gave the project up as something I should have asked about before I enthusiastically got involved in, since I could not figure it out by myself. So, I now have a partially-taken-apart D-9, with all the parts carefully cleaned, and kept that really needs a new home. The serial number is 2765960. I would say it is in excellent condition, with the exception of the exterior paint. The machine does not look rusty to me at all, but it appears that someone painted it all except for the W&W logo in the center of the sewing area? It came on a board, attached to a New Home treadle, which was kind of strange, but the machine was in good shape. I was very enthusiastic about this D-9, as I believe it is a superior piece of engineering, however I need to find it a new home. My husband is cleaning out his workshop, and I hate to see this go to the junkyard. It has all the parts, including a bobbin. Do I have any takers? I live in Central New York. It is free to anyone who would like to make use of it. Margaret

Hi. I¡¯m Mike. I¡¯ve just got finished reviving a D9 my sister brought down from her last visit. I like it so much that I bought a cheap ($40) Singer 9W-7 on eBay that fits one of my singer cabinets and uses Singer 221 bobbins. It¡¯s a fine machine but it¡¯s no D9. I¡¯ve managed to acquire 4 bobbins for the D9 and substitute needles for it (and my singer 9W-7). If I could just locate a real bobbin cover slide plate for the D9, instead of the homemade one it now has, it¡¯ll be ready for my sister to pick up on her next visit. She acquired the D9 and cabinet from a coworker who was about to throw it away! She volunteered to take the machine (knowing nothing about it) and uses it for a lamp stand. When she finally told me about it I told her that the machine has a great reputation and I would like to try to get it sewing again. I managed to get it situated on a singer VS-2 cabinet after I got it freed up. Someday I¡¯ll find a good deal on one for myself. Anyway, that the extent of my current adventures with the Wheeler and Wilson D9.

W & W No1 Bobbin
Hi from Australia - Many thanks to a forum member here in Australia I now have a needle for my No 1, but still on the look-out for a bobbin. So far everything I've seen on ebay has been priced out of my league. Ian

Upper tension issues on Jones Spool
I¡¯ve acquired a second Jones Spool, an early one with the same tension pulley system as the W & W 9. The upper tension is tight and proving difficult to adjust. On dismantling both my Spools¡¯ tensions to compare I¡¯ve found I¡¯m missing the metal washer with the crossbar from one of them, but swapping it to the other machine makes no appreciable difference. The felt washers are present but probably original - are they best replaced? Can I also check whether the washers should be dry? On my first Spool, which does adjust rather better, I realised they were completely oil soaked but I¡¯m not sure from the 9 manual whether they should be oiled or not. I haven¡¯t found a Spool manual covering the early models with the tension pulley rather than discs. This Spool came with a couple of attachments and 4 bobbins, which I¡¯ll be able to use in my #9 too. I¡¯ll put photos on in case anyone is interested. Gill Churchill

Help! Long story short...
hi all! I¡¯ve been here before, lost my pw (no surprise). I am soooo geographically challenged. I bought a WW model 1 thinking it was an hour away, and of course it¡¯s 5.5 hours away, and my license expired (DH¡¯s too). Anybody up for a road trip from Vienna WV to Baltimore Md? Kathy/MD

Ian in Australia's photos
Finally managed to upload some pics - drag and drop doesn't work, have to double click each pic. As you can see the No. 1 even with a good clean still shows its "patina" but will sew once I track down a needle and bobbin - now to get stuck into fixing up the cabinet and treadle. The No. 8 and D-9 both work perfectly
