Needle plate threaded hole

MB Freeman All Messages By This Member #3984 Does anyone know the purpose or use of the threaded hole I circled in green on the needle plate in the Drop Box Link? The picture with the empty hole is my Singer 9W7. ?The other picture shows a slotted flathead screw inserted in the same hole on another machine. ?Was the purpose of the screw to prevent lint from accumulating inside the opening?
