Wheeler and Wilson No 9 or D9 ?

I have been gifted 2 Wheeler and Wilson No 9/D9 ? machines about which I know absolutely nothing. They came with 1 needle and one shuttle bobbin between them.? The round headed needle has a groove running the length of it and fits into one of the machines but has too large a shank to fit into the other one.? Both seem to have built in bobbin cases with a latch for removal of the bobbin.

One has the Serial No:?2277760?and the other has the serial number?2559291.?
I live in UK and would dearly love to be able to use one or both of these machines, value is immaterial as I intend to keep them when and if I can get the needles/bobbins I need.?
If anyone can help with information on needle size or alternatives and where I can buy these or the bobbins I would be most grateful.
Any further help or information such as age etc would be most appreciated.
Waiting hopefully
Linda

Sounds like they are both D9s as 9s have a removable bobbin case. I’m in the U.K. and bought MY1014b needles from college-sewing.co.uk for my D9. They have a flat side to the shank which most D9s require, though I understand some will accept the round shank due to a difference in the needle clamp. I can’t help you with bobbins I’m afraid. I was lucky and spotted mine on eBay in a lot of mixed stuff I took a chance on.

Forgot to mention age. The D9 was introduced in 1895 and was still being produced when Singer bought out the company, which I think was 1907. Yours are probably 19th century given the serial numbers.

Look up Helen Howes in the UK, I have gotten many items from her over the years.

Singer officially took over W&W in November 1905. The Sewing Machine Times reported the sale and that W&W would continue making the machines.? W&W also sub-contracted sewing machine companies on the West Coast to make the D9.
