Fw: Installing new oil pan
4
Over the years I've tried several fixes for a leaking drain plug but none have stood the test of time. I've got a Stalbus I've wanted to install as a reliable permanent fix but I decided to hold off on that until I either replaced the pan or removed it to see if I could go the Helicoil or similar route. My question is are they any "Dos" or "Don'ts" when removing & replacing the pan. Fuel Tank Issues
6
Greetings fellow Dubyaheads, Long time lurker, first time poster here. I have a 2000 W in great running shape despite having sat outside and unridden for at least three years prior to my acquiring it in 2016, but over the last 6 years I have been unable to solve a problem that is particularly troublesome. If the tank is more than half full (or half empty depending on how you look at it) It will leak gas out of the filler cap when warm. As it seemed like what would happen if the vent tube was clogged I replaced the hose on the vent nipple but did not improve the situation. I also replaced the filler cap to no avail. I ran it like this for four years simply never filling the tank more than halfway as a non-solution solution. I took a break from riding it over the past two years and when I got it back on the road last week I was determined to solve the problem this time by focusing on the metal vent tube that goes through the tank. I used a guitar string to ream it out and got it to a point where it seemed like I could feel air out of the hose when I shot compressed air into the vent hole under the cap. This seemed to solve the problem, but I noticed a very small amount of fuel at the end of the hose after a short ride, indicating that the vent tube in the tank was compromised by my reaming with a steel guitar string. Even worse, the tank cap leak came back shortly thereafter. So my question is whether the tank vent system is the only possible cause of my filler cap leak? One thing that might be important to know is that the fuel cap was stuck shut when I purchased the bike. Secondarily, as it now seems that I have created a pinhole in my vent tube, and have not had luck with finding local bike or auto body shops that want to work on fixing the tank, is there anyone on this listserv that knows of a repair shop in northern california that will or has a spare fuel tank in usable shape that they want to sell? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Low bar brake line in the US
6
Hi all - I switched to the low bar cables for my clubman bars a while back, save the brake line. Rather than ordering a new OEM low bar line, I thought I ought switch to braided stainless. HEL in the UK have pre-manufactured ones at 56$ shipped. Imagine others have done this as well or do you all prefer the stock feel? Found a similar quality stainless a bit cheaper? Thanks

W650 Chain guard/guide production
I ordered a new chain guide/guard from webike japan and apparently it's out of production. Will one for a W800 fit? I think the W800 has a 500 chain vs. the 525 on the w650. W650 version is available in the US but it's cheaper over there and with my order.

Derustification II: Rust Never Sleeps.
9
Underside of the frame with the center stand mounts. Probably 90% of that rust was hidden under the paint and some of the paint was hidden under grime. This is probably not a part of the bike that gets a frequent thorough wash and wax job. The paint is subjected to the elements and this part of the bike gets some pretty harsh elements. Road grit that's like sandblasting, road salt, dust, high temperature because it's right up next to the engine, etc. Plenty of crannies where water can sit a while too. Interesting thing on the frame I'd never noticed before, drain holes for those frame tubes. I figure there's going to be rust inside the tube around those holes. It's going to be difficult to get liquid rust converter up in there and I'm not sure how far inside spray can deruster is going to get either. It'd be easy using a rotisserie but I don't have one of those, and I'm not crazy about turning the whole bike upside down, but my tired brain at the moment has limited ability to ponder the situation. I am encouraged by the work I've done so far. I zapped a lot of small rust spots and put a new coat of paint on the back end of the frame. Fortunately the chrome on the shocks is still in good shape and only needed a good cleaning and polishing to get that to look new. The upper part of the shocks had weary paint so I redid them. I'm also planning on getting all the clear coat off the engine casings and clean polish them to eliminate the corrosion. Unfortunately the camshaft tube chrome has long since worn off and being immensely difficult to replace, if I can't get the steel polished so it look I might paint it black. I'm thinking that's what Triumph or BSA would have done to save a few pence on the chrome plating costs. This is all a lot easier with the mufflers off so you can get to those parts of the frame that are hidden behind

Short OEM blinkers in the front
6
Hi all, Hope that it won't happen again, but when I dropped my last W650 the turn signal smacked the tank and left a nasty dent. Also, they limit my clubman bars configuration. I figure I can pick up some used shorter OEMs that go in the back on the cheap and just swap out the innards to make them running lights as well. Recon they'll be short enough? I thought about aftermarket, but I like the size * brightness of the OEM. Haven't seen any LEDs that keep the character of the bike too well.

Dent in my tank!
7
Last fall before not long before my last ride I pulled the W out of the shed to get the lawnmower out for one of the last mows of the year, you know leaves and all that. I had left the bike parked in the yard while i mowed and during a break while consuming a refreshingly cool beverage i heard a sound. Something fell, i was unable to determine the source. UNTIL i was getting ready to shed the W. I have walnut trees. And at that time of year they are big fat and green . Nearly the size of a baseball. What do I see looking at my tank but a walnut sized dent! Right near the fuel cap! I contact a friend who's done paintless dent removal before for me but he is so busy with other things I can't get him to look at it. I decide to wait till this spring . A few weeks ago I contacted a friend that I know in the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club who owns a body shop . I've seen his restoration work. He says he doesn't do paintless dent removal and refers me to a guy who he says is the best in town. I contact him and he looks at it and says it's going to take some work. A week later I get it back and it looks as good as new and I am very pleased!

Oil filters & bypass valves
12
Hi all, So, I got to thinking about the bypass valves in oil filters and at what point our Kawi's stop filtering and just let it all flow through. My Purolator ONE opens its valve 14-18psi and their motorcycle specific filter opens at 11-14. Here is the info from our service manual on oil pressure: So, it would seem our filters bypass the media fairly often at lower rpms. Most of our riding is filter-free it would seem? Just thought it was interesting. I know the new Honda Super Cub 125 doesn't even have an oil filter. Still thinking of picking one of those up. 100+mpg!

Carb rebuild needed?
4
These carbs were apparently rebuilt by the previous owner due to ethanol gunk. Also, they're leaking but doesn't smell like gas. Around the boots and dripping down the idle mixture adjust knob, dripping onto the sprocket cover & the vacuum lines have gas in them. Aught I take this in for an inspection or have you all any idea? Right airbox also has some oil seeping out, though nothing in the drain tubes.

MSF VIDEO, HOW TO TEACH THE ERC
I talked to one of your instructors recently at the Avenues Mall, I do not remember his name, blaming that on my age, anyway, I am interested in finding someone who taught long enough ago, that they may have a copy of the MSF video, HOW TO TEACH THE ERC. The Instructor/Rider Coach I talked to said that there were coaches with your program that might be old enough to have, or know someone who may have access to that video. The MSF told me that they were not archiving their videos back then, and apparently, the Chief Instructors I worked with back then are retired or have passed away. I lost my copy (my copy of Bill Bernnel on the CMSP is gone as well...both victims of VHS tapes self destructing), they gave a VHS copy to everyone involved in the filming, and I have a speaking part in the movie. Side note, the day they were shooting the classroom scenes, Alan Isley posed by my 1983 Yamaha Venture Royale (Old Yeller), for a cover shot for SAFE CYCLING. I had ridden that bike to the filming. CALIFORNIA FOCUS My Video.mpg I recently purchased a program, ROXIO EASY VHS TO DVD. Other videos I was involved in, have been copied through this program (actually as part of copying, the program downloads a digital copy to your computer desk top, and I actually prefer the digital copy to the DVD copy as its easier to share). Corbin seat for sale
2
#s
Hi, gang. It's good to see some old friends here from Yahoo. I've let my W go (along with most of the rest of my stuff. We sold the house and are full-time in an RV these days.) But I kept the Corbin seat which is in search of a new ride. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZDAqr2oURoQf6eTs7 Any interest LMK. Shipping is killer on an item this size but if you're anywhere near central NJ it's available for pickup. They're commanding around $300 on ebay these days but I'll settle for less. Note that it has a socket for a backrest but I've never had one so it's the seat only. The leather has two small dings, see photos. Otherwise in excellent shape. Thanks. =Sal

Brake light connector
2
I noticed recently that my brake light would not turn on when I press the front brake. On investigating further I noticed that one of the wires that goes to the brake switch is broken off its connector. I¡¯ve attached a picture, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I pulled out my solder gun and tried to solder a connector but there isn¡¯t much space to work there, so looking for any ideas that might work. Thank you!

Drip from elbow bottom of petcock
11
Hi there, I tried to wake the W after a long winter...I put in a new battery. Once running, a little gas drip from the elbow coming from the bottom of the petcock started. The elbow slid out with ease. There seems to be a keyway around the little fitting. Does anyone happen to know if there should there be a gasket / o-ring on the fitting. At the moment.. there isn't one.. it swivels freely but it pops out with little force. Thanks, Robin.

Derustification after 21 years and 49,000 miles.
7
What started out as simple fork oil and steering head bearings maintenance jobs have now snowballed into essentially disassembling various parts groups to give them a good cleaning and eliminating rust. After this many years and miles there are minor blemishes and hidden spots of rust all over. I highly recommend a jack to bring the bike up to a more comfortable level. The taillight assembly showed minor surface rust lurking in the crevasses. Yech. After cleaning, treatment with Rust B Gone, and repainting it just needs a bit of wet sanding to tidy up. I¡¯ve also touched up the fender undersides with Eastwood rubberized coating and some POR-15 in the seams as preventative measures. The center stand received a fresh coat of paint and some POR-15 on the undersides of the feet. I¡¯ve also ground off the surface rust on the exhaust system weld beads and given those a protective coat of POR-15. Heat promotes rust much like salty water and POR-15 can be used on hot surfaces. I think a coat of silver engine paint should make the work pretty inconspicuous. Fortunately I now live in a part of the world that doesn¡¯t salt the roads in the winter. However, the bike was ridden for 12 years where they did but even I kept it off the road until the salt was washed away in spring. Eventually, the years and miles add up and sometimes you have to go through every part of the bike and do a thorough cleaning and spot repair of paint, or for some parts, a complete repaint. Washing and waxing cuts down on that kind of work but it doesn¡¯t always get into every nook and cranny. Next up is stripping the engine clear coat paint and polishing.
