Alternate Battery and Light Options

I should have sent this out a month ago, _before_ picking up a new standard battery for my W, but how are people feeling about the newer types of batteries for our bikes?

It seems like the improved charge holding and smaller size of something like a Lithium Ion battery might be pretty awesome but I've heard concerns about them failing or not handling the charging from a motorcycle set up to charge a regular battery very well. ? The W seems like it's pretty sensitive to weak batteries, so I get a bit nervous, but, I've not looked into it for a while and technology keeps on improving.

On a similar note, has anyone found LED lights that seem to work particularly well?? Preferably, something that I could easily swap out -- ideally, I'd love to keep the housing and bezel for at least the headlight, but keeping it for all the lights would be nice.

Thanks!

I have Lithium Ion both of my Ws and a virago 535 the longest going back over 7 years!. I had 1 failure in my Sportster, It was an off brand "Twin Power" Li-Po, so go with an established maker like Shorai. They are more than twice the cost but remove virtually all the hassles of old tech batteries, I hook mine up to a float charger every 6 months or so but they will hold a full charge for over a year. If you go old tech be sure to keep a battery tender on it and check electrolyte levels (if it is user serviceable) periodically.

FWIW
I too was worried about using a Lithium ion battery only because of how the charging system was going to properly charge it.??? I have lithium batteries in other things and like the fact that they hold a charge so well and can be cycled so many more times,? but for my W650?
I ended up buying an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery.?? These are lead acid batteries but with a gel instead of a flooded liquid.?? No maintenance and resistant to vibration.?? They also do well in maintaining their charge and hold it better than flooded batteries.

Currently I have standard lead-acid batteries in both our Ws and they are doing quite well.? But when my wife's W battery started to fade the bike just died in the middle of a ride.? So, I appreciate the concern.? I have a Shorai lithium in my Bonneville and I must say it is worth the price.? (Paul 'ain't kiddin', it's twice the price). But (especially in the Bonneville-which eats batteries for breakfast-well worth it.? I would not hesitate to put one in either 650 and will do so the next time I have to change the battery.? But don't go cheap.? Save your nickles and get a good one.

I had a battery go dead on my W in the middle of a ride ( collapsed cell ) the bike went erratic?in low revs under load, however made it home thanks to the kickstarter. I have fitted an on/off?toggle switch to the main headlight in case it happens again, saving 55w should let you ride normal. Had it happen once before on an SR 500 up in Iceland ,but no worry due to manual on/ off lighting and the kick start.

If a battery go,s on the road due to a collapsed cell ?( for example ) and its daylight .Remove the lighting fuse or just the front bulb and that will give you an extra 55 to 65w . The bike should then run normal and also we are lucky to have a kick starter.?

I experienced it.? I was cruising down the highway at 70 and the bike just died.? I couldn't keep it going, I didn't try to disconnect the light.? Thanks for the work around.

I have had an Earth-X brand lithium battery on my Yamaha FZ1 since early 2014 and it is still working flawlessly.? Weighs a couple of pounds and is half the size of the stock battery.

I put a gel battery in my last W650. Worked pretty well and wasn't crazy expensive

Don¡¯t know how old the battery in mine is. It came with the bike 6 years ago. It spends time on a smart charger winter and summer when not ridden regularly.

I have a YTX14BS in mine right now which is dead from lack of use and my not keeping it on a maintainer.? But I also remember it was almost impossible to install and fit in.? The K Service manual calls for:?
12 v 12 AH (200 CCA) ? for the C3 - C5
12v 10 AH (180) CCA? for the C5. C6P, C7 and C6F

The 20 CCA difference doesn't bother me much at all.? I don't live in or ride in a super cold climate and I keep the bike inside. I also not have any additional electric current draws on it.

A YUASA? YTX14BS? is? 150 mm x 87 mm x 145 mm?? or 6" x 3-7/16 x 5-3/4"
A YUASA? YTX12BS is? 150 mm x 87 mm x 130 mm? or? 6" x 3-7/16" x 5-1/8"

If the difference in the 2 battery dimensions is in the height,? I am going to try a YTX12BS this time in the AGM and see how it goes.? I know how long the 14 BS lasted for me,

I am more interested in the fit and being able to get the battery out, which on my bike the 14BS is almost welded in there it is so tight.
