Anyone using a satellite internet provider? We're stuck on a
56k modem that rarely runs faster than 28k, I was thinking of going to Hughesnet
as the costs are coming down. If so, I'd appreciate your opinion.

Too far out to get DSL. I could get cable, but that would
involve digging a 90 foot trench down to the pole on the road, can't go overhead
wires, all utilities are buried here. Also cable would cost as much per month. I
have satellite tv and love it.

Before the local telephone exchange went digital
we couldn't get DSL and I looked briefly at satellite but it was touted as a
business solution only as it was so expensive.
?
There's one other slight problemmette.....You
only get fast downloads ... unless your receiver dish is actually a
transmitter as well, so you need to keep your phone line .....

Unless I do a package deal with phone/tv/net cable access
prices about the same as sat access these days, only difference being $300 start
up for the sat, $200 for cable. Although likely I can find (or wait) for a
better start up deal with cable.
?
With the radio upload link they have these days, upload speeds
are around 128.
?
Meanwhile, I have done some research, and Hughesnet, the
biggest sat biz, is like dealing with your worst nightmare cable company. The
other sat option is BlueSky, I can't find out much about them, but they offer a
slower service around 500kbps for a little less money. Now I'm reconsidering
digging that 90ft trench out to the utility pole and doing cable, a whopping
4mbps for the same money.

I think the cable option is definitely the best
route....There are a lot of extra clever features as well, like movies on demand
and so on...

Whatever method is used, we can't destroy the water, phone,
and power lines that are buried in the same area.
?
One thing I've been wondering, if I can run the cable thru the
same buried line that the phone uses now. I don't know how the phone company
would sit with that, the conduit and line is their property and
responsibility.

There's almost certainly a pull-through sitting
in the conduit...perhaps they wouldn't notice as long as you didn't break the
phone line!

Thanks Dennis. My ditch digging days are over,
thanks to my back problems. Not to mention I'm retired and absolutely refuse to
do anything that even remotely resembles work. Have to stay true to my
convictions!
?
However, I've lately?started a yoga class that
seems to be helping. The instructor(ess) had her back broken years ago, in 3
places, in a car accident and started?following this certain
program.?You'd never know?she had problems looking at her now. She
looks about 20 years younger than her age and?runs circles around the jocks
down at the gym.??
I have high hopes as the regular doctors say they
can't do anything for my muscle spasms. I'm thinking they come from some place
inside that "medicine" doesn't affect. Opening the energy paths (or whatever she
calls it) is causing unusual effects.
Stay tuned.

I think I'd have to pull the original phone line out, and fish
thru the phone and cable lines at the same time.
This appears to be schedule 5 plastic conduit, very thin wall,
and I'll bet has no elbows or sweeps in the run, merely bent to fit the run.
That's ok, no obstructions with threaded fittings to hang up on.
