A lot of wet clutches “stick” when starting up.? Start up with the clutch lever pulled in, and as others have said engage first with the brake on.? The GTR would leap forward if it had been stopped for a while unless you did that

I always snick it into first as the motor runs down off a throttle
blip...and I have the front brake on as I do. It still graunches a bit, but
it doesn't leap forward! Trouble is, you can't 'free the clutch' like on the
old Triumphs because the kickstart is through the gearbox and propels the
bike forward w3hen the bike's in gear.

That's incredible mileage. I'm surprised he ever went over 30 mph!

A mystery. Here's my start-off procedure if you think it'll help. Got it by
amalgamating others' on this group. Sorry to teach granny to suck eggs, but
I wondered if it's something to do with going into gear at the higher revs
you keep mentioning.

I always warm her a bit up to 2000-2250 with the choke on, and shove in the
choke completely before heading off. This prevents me forgetting to put it
in later and fouling the plugs, which doesn't take long if you ride with the
choke out. . This procedure takes a few minutes in winter and right now, in
the good weather with my richer #38 pilot jet in, only 20-30 seconds. So
when I put her into first with the clutch disengaged, while idling at maybe
200-500, I have no revs going at all hardly. So little scrunching going
on. Then I rev up to 2000-2500 at least and let in the clutch and chug up
my steep driveway.

About 50% of the time mine goes into 1st fine but gives a big jump and
graunch of protest, esp. if cold. I think it's the clutch sticking. If I
don't pull firmly & fast from first into second it'll graunch there too.
Going down I have to be firm and fast on the tap or it might do the same
from second-first.

I've forgotten how many miles are on it, have the valves been adjusted?
(thinking bags of nails sounds). Never had electrical whines or bevel
whines (touch wood).

Remember, many say this bike loves a good "thrashing, "caning" etc. I have
resolved never to baby mine, I twist that throttle whenever I can even if
just to get up to revs in town. More fun.

Go compare with another W, ride it hard for a while, and see.

Make sure the shift lever in snug on the shaft. These bikes have a
pretty long throw and if the lever is loose you can have problems with
getting a positive gear change.

No I didn't test ride, other than a 50 yard burst up the road, the
gear change didn't clunk, and on the back of one other. And yes you
are right every little noise I will be jumping all over. As to being
pleased, I love the torque and the fact it romps reasonably quickly up
to 90, which, as I was expecting it to actually be slower
accelerating, than it is is a bonus.

Re: Arrgghhh...I can't make up my mind whether I hate my...

You've got to run at a VERY slow pace to get 89 mpg. I'd be surprised
if that bike has even sniffed 6000 before you got it. I think it
needs some serious thrashing. It's clearly as tight as a duck's arse.

You definitely need to compare it, and get it compared to other W's
because with all due respect, you are sounding increasingly paranoid
about stuff that so far sounds entirely normal.

The gearboxes are NOT butter smooth in these bikes. They are
certainly not as bad as the air-cooled Beemers and 850cc
Guzzis...Those bikes really crunched as you shifted out of first. The
trouble is, your Yams have awesome shifts, I know, I've ridden a few,
but big torquey twins have a fair amount of metal in their gearboxes.

I have to say that the W's gearbox isn't as failsafe as say my
SR500's was and using it clutchless will result in a false neutral or
so, but aybe you are treating it like it has glass cogs or something.

If you can get it down here you can take mnine out and I'll ride
yours. We should be able to allay your fears re reliability at least.
Whether you'll want to keep the bike after that is something only
you'll know!

#Jon

My graunches from cold if the revs are too high, but once on the

it is is fine, however once it is warmed up then the gearchange gets
worse.

The whining noise at 3.5k revs seems to coming from the LH side of
the
engine, surely that isn't bevel noise there is it?. My bike is
whisper
quiet at cold, has the 3.5k rev whine (didn't notice when this
started, whether cold or warm) and then once warm sounds like a bag
of
nails from the bevel area.

I accept that it hasn't been run hard very often, as, whilst the
bloke
said he had seen 85 on the clock, he kept a record of mpg, which
showed a low of 67mpg and a high of 89mph, with his average being
about 75mpg...

The whine is simply the bevel. It's just snug. In the manual there is
a note
about adjustment and it talks about whether it is preferable to have
a whine
when cold or hot. Mine whines cold but rattles a bit when hot. Yours
sounds
lovely and tight. As you use it the whine will diminish. I suspect
it's been
ridden very gently and needs running in.

The 'electrical' whine is common and is actually something else. I
suspect
it is a pressure differential somewhere. If you disconnect the
battery it
carries on!. The W has a fairly clever anti-vapour system in the tank
and I
reckon that has something to do with it.

My car however really does whine when stopped and turned off. . If
you open
a door the active suspension computer wakes up and makes a whine for
30
seconds while it waits for someone to get in so it can adjust the
spring
rates!

didn't
work as I couldn't the flexible hose past the last gear on the
cluster. However Ruari's idea of putting the bike on the
centrestand
and then putting same size bits of wood under the front and rear
wheels worked a treat. I had already checked the rear sprocket and
the chain, which has no tight spot and is perfectly adjusted. The
clutch lever is also by the book as regards free play at the lever
and I took my heated grips off, as they meant I lost half an inch
of
travel on the lever. Due to the cr*p weather this was the first
time O had started it since June 1st. I keep her hooked up to
Optimate trickle charger, still took a couple of dabs on the
starter
but off she went. I tried to put her in to 1st only to receive a
baulk and a scrunch. However I then figured it might because I am
trying at too high a revs. SO I blipped the throttle a few time and
dobbed the choke in and wey hay into 1st she went. Even so, once
warm she still crunches from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. The
rest of gears are sweet going up and not to bad coming down the
box.

There is a whine once the revs hit 3.5k, regardless of gear, and as
a result I am getting more and more p*ssed off with this damn bike.
Went for 45 minute run through the country lanes, topped off with a
90mph ride back down some dual-carriageway (allegedly officer).Park
her up and then started working on my RZ, go back into the garage
to
hear a high pitched, low volume, electrical whine...now I am
getting
to the stage where I want to ship this bike out and replace it with
a Honda! The noise has now gone without me finding out exactly what
it was....obvious suspect is the alarm.

I am more worried about the whine at 3.5k and above...anyone else
got this? Could this be result of me turning the bike off when the
revs were up and hearing a terrible clunk, as the pistons stopped
dead, as I previously described...I certain don't remember the
whine
before! :>(

On the flip side this bike is so forgiving, it doesn't matter what
revs you go into a corner at, as she will pull out of the bend. It
is nice to bimble along at slow speeds. My route was through some
pretty villages, with thatched cottages and down lovely twisty
roads. And then to hit dual-carriageway and shoot past a Ninja and
a
Suzuki GS500 at 85-90mph (allegedly). So atht emoment it is a love-
hate relationship, which, as this was meant to be my reliable, no
tinker, bike is a bit disappointing!

In addition I decided to do a gearbox change on the RZ, removing
the
black 3 year old oil and replacing with the Silkolene Light Gear
Oil
(as used by many on the forum) to end up with sticker gearchanges
and a buzzing noise (like a nut loose) than I had using the rubbish
that was in there....not a good weekend!

about adjustment and it talks about whether it is preferable to have
a whine
when cold or hot.

My car however really does whine when stopped and turned off. . If
you open
a door the active suspension computer wakes up and makes a whine for
30
seconds while it waits for someone to get in so it can adjust the
spring
rates!

bl**dy W or like it.

The oil was over filled, as I said before, and today I dropped
600ml
out to get to just below the maximum mark. The syringe method
didn't
work as I couldn't the flexible hose past the last gear on the

Has any one used the dry chain lub's I see advertised, eg Wurth. Are
they any good?
3 months into the 'w' and I am loving it! Keep turning in 75mpg, is
this reasonable? Even been out in the rain twice, it's either that or
stay in at the moment.

Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously
been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a
***problem*** bike. I have decided that if I can't get it sorted by
the end of the summer then I am going to get rid of it and look for
something else....I am so p*ssed of right now. The bikes are not going
well, we have just got some work, which means my dream of going to Uni
is over....Arrgghh

Also, Nige, I forget what oil weight you are using, if it's 20W-50 go
to 10W-40. I assume your clutch lever is adjusted OK.

If these suggestions don't work, see if you can get to ride with and
swap with another W owner. There are more of you closer together
over there.

Perhaps you have a typical W650, but it doesn't sound like it, it
unfortunately sounds like you may have a problem bike, and if you get
to compare with another you'll know.

The clunky gear changes may be because you still have a little too
much oil. I find that with too much oil in my W (ie. *just* below
the
max. line), my gear changes get pretty chunky because the clutch
drags
a bit. Bring the oil level down to exactly between the upper and
lower
lines and your shifting may improve (worked for me).

At the moment I'm watching the Tour De France much of which is on the roads I ride on my commute to work

I'm off on the CB to Cornwall on Tuesday to look at the rain down there. :)
