Re: Small Fuel Leak from Carb - JIS Screws
Some JIS screws can be identified by a small dimple on the screw head. You run into the biggest problems when trying to unscrew those which haven't been unscrewed for years or there's Loctite on them.
?
That's why many have replaced the carb float bowl screws with Allen head screws. They're also easier to remove with a ratchet hex drive in those difficult to access ones buried in the innards of the carbs.
?
I've installed an inline filter on my W650 to keep crud out of the carbs, but that doesn't help with fuel that sits in the bowl for months. I do however, only fill up my tank at a Chevron station. They add Techron to their gas, which should help keep crud from forming. I also live in a climate with a short winter where they don't salt the roads so the bike doesn't sit as long as it did when I lived in the northeast.
?
?
?
Comparison of the different screwdriver tips. Like Phillips screws they come in #1, #2, #3, etc sizes.
?
?
It's easy to round out the JIS screws because the screwdriver is hitting only the upper part of the notches with the most torque.?
?
As best I can tell, none of the screwdrivers sold at Hazard Fraught Tools include a JIS bit.?
?
Some say that Posidrive screwdrivers could be used on JIS screws but I have not tried it. I have ground down the tip of Phillips screwdrivers and that seems like it works. But when in doubt, use the bike tool kit screwdriver.

Re: Small Fuel Leak from Carb
Those screws are not Phillips screws, they are JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws. You should use the screwdriver that's in the tool kit if you don't have a JIS screwdriver.?
?
I only learned about this after fouling up all the screws on my bike.?
?
?
I think you can also grind down the tip of a Phillips screwdriver, but I can't swear by that.

Re: Small Fuel Leak from Carb
I just went out to inspect to see if it was still leaking and there was some (about 1/2 oz) of the Techron in a plastic container that I placed beneath the left carb float bowl.
I could also see a drip located on the bottom of the accelerator pump.
Everything above that seems to be dry so I think that's probably where the leak is.
?
I attempted to tighten the 3 screws that attach the accelerator pump cover to the bottom of the float bowl but I think I buggered them up a but since I just used a standard Phillips screw driver.
?
Does anyone know if these are the same screws as the four screws that hold the float bowl on?
I replaced mine with hex when I first got the bike so if they're the same, then I just need to locate my receipt to get the size UNLES someone can let me know what size they are.
?
Then I'll remove the left side float bowl and remove the accelerator pump from the bench, which may be easier to remove and replace the o-ring and gaskets inside the pump.
?
Any thoughts/comments are much appreciated. |

Re: Small Fuel Leak from Carb
I just added some Chevron Techron through the fuel line (disconnected from petcock) after draining the fuel from both drains at bottom of float bowls.
I'm going to let it sit until tomorrow morning and then I'll drain the Techron and reconnect fuel line and start her up and see what happens. |

Cracked fuel line? Sometimes they experience microcracks you can barely see.? On Wed, May 28, 2025 at 9:52?AM Keith Grams via <grams=[email protected]> wrote:

Small Fuel Leak from Carb
I had the bike sitting for about 2 years after the petcock developed a leak. I emptied all the gas from the tank before I let it sit so no gas in tank.
I'm passing the bike on to my son and we purchased all the seals, etc. and rebuilt the petcock which no longer leaks.
?
Added new gas and the bike started right up. It sounded a little grumpy at first but the engine seems to be running pretty smoothly after everything got warmed up.
?
Then my son noticed a slight dripping of gas on the bottom of the left float bowl.
Upon closer inspection, we noticed slightly wet area between the two carbs seemingly closer to the left carb above the float bowl and even higher than the metal choke rail.?
I just can't see exactly where the source of the leak is yet.
?
Before I remove the carbs, is there any common area of failure (gas leaks) in that general vicinity that I can possible get to without removing the carbs?
?
Any suggestions are much appreciated. |

Re: Captain Jake's website
Is he no longer with us?
?
I'd say allowing the site to go dark and letting it be availableon Internet Archive is a sign that he wouldn't mind having the information posted where others could more easily find it, especially fellow W650 riders.
?
It's not like he monetizes it so it wouldn't result in potential economic harm (an important factor in copyright infringement cases). |
