Re: In 2023 what is the best tire for our W650?
I agree that Sport Demons have good handling but if longevity and very quiet running is your end goal, I'd go with Michelin Road Classics. I have had them for a few hundred miles but speeds up to 104mph I am still surprised with how quiet they run.
Group members on Facebook all report how well they do in heavy rains and their durability. For similar price point, I'd do Michelin because they will last longer.? |
Re: In 2023 what is the best tire for our W650?
I’ve not ridden the Pirelli Road Demons, but I put a set of Pirelli Sport Demons on my Dub and they’ve done well. I’ve taken them to the track where I found the handling solid, predictable, and quite able to handle lean and “ton-up” speeds. I’ll not hesitate to put another set on the bike.
FWIW, I’m on my second set of Dunlop Sportmax RoadSmart III’s on my BMW R1100S. Great grip wet or dry, excellent handling at lean, and excellent mileage. Same for the Dunlop Mission Trails on my KTM—though they’ll definitely not for the track! So I’ve had no problems with either the Pirelli or Dunlop tires I’ve used. FWIW! Dan |
Re: In 2023 what is the best tire for our W650?
Before I put a pair of Metzler Road Tec 1 tires on my Bonneville, I thought the bike was just a tank that would not lean in turns, especially at high speeds.? Wrong.? Now it goes wherever I put it and stays there.? Immune to road groves and, I hope, like the square Lazer tecs it came with, should last much longer the the Pirelli Road Demons I replaced.? When my wife heard about this I was put on task to immediately replace the Dunlops on her W.? I had to special order the rear tire from Dennis Kirk and it took a while but I finally got them.? She loves 'em.? Now all I have to do is use up the Dunlops on my W and then the ones I took off her bike then I can get a set of of Road Techs for that bike.? Guess I better get started on the project.

Re: In 2023 what is the best tire for our W650?
Update: I swapped out my front tire with the Shenko 705 adventure rubber and I love it. Way stiffer, heavier and gripper so it’s made the front end track better. At first it gave me lazy feedback but I got used to it quickly. It feels much better planted, it inspires confidence since I know what it can handle after 5000 miles being on my 1200gs

Re: In 2023 what is the best tire for our W650?
Rather than the standard 100/90-19 and the 130/80-18.? I now fit 110/90 front and 140/80 rear which gives a higher?profile and wider ground cover base. They look better on the bike. Google and find a suitable?tread pattern. Right now I have Pirralle?Tyres with slightly chunky tread they go well on tar seal and dirt roads. Everything feels predictable and no nonsense, which is obviously what you want with tires/handling. |
Re: Considering buying a 2001 W650-Green
Thanks for the replies, I think I’ll plan to work on it this winter. I was able to take a look at the W again recently. I was there to pull out a different bike (that’s another story) so I only took one photo of the W, which doesn’t show much. I do recall that the right side carb was pulled off, hopefully it can be located.?

Re: Considering buying a 2001 W650-Green
A 1,000 bucks? I'd tell prospective buyers to kick rocks, no offense. People are asking and getting $$ just for tanks in good condition. Even if the bike you described needed new brake fluid and some reasonable caliber work, you still couldn't justify a $1,000 sale price. Getting new tires is almost a given, even on bikes in great shape. If the tires still sat over time, they could already be passed the manufacturer recommended run times. When I look at used bikes, I am never surprised that they need new chains/sprockets and tires?
People always overlook this; carefully inspect all bolts and fasteners. See a lot of stripped or 'cammed out' bolts etc? Yeah, the owner showed little patience or attention to detail. If that is confirmed, can you trust that critical and expensive internals were not neglected? Post detailed photos here and get some more insight because I'm confident you'll get more help. Good luck! |

If these last 9,000 mi put me down for another set! Michelin also cam thru with their advertised rebate so add that for further inspiration? |
No longer able to ride :-(
Late last year (2022) I was diagnosed with faulty heart parts and no longer allowed to ride. Besides, we have been invaded by a horde of messengers with 125cc bikes, mad skills and little regard for their own lives or those of older riders. I have therefore decided to sell my much loved 2000 W650. I am asking for $4,300.- but I am, of course willing to entertain offers. I have advertised it locally (I am located in Panama City, Panama). The bike is in excellent shape, especially considering it spent its early life in a beach town, but it needed a new tank in 2022 which I was fortunately able to find.?
