Re: PETCOCK DRILL OUT

Hi Bob,

The part I went with was the Yamaha 5LP-24500-01. My research indicates that part number has been superseded
several times by Yamaha. It's the stock piece off their Raptor 660.

Installation went fine without a hitch. And I like the fact that the horizontal outlet neck is a tad lower from the tank
than the stock petcock.

I installed it the same day a friend and I replaced my ratted out stock pipes with set of John's Fish Pipes I snatched up
last fall. I'll be doing a few separate posts on how they're working out.

Meantime,? in your post below you mention you " drilled out the main feed holes by one drill size over what was already in there ".

Q. 1 - - - did you run the bike without the drilling and felt it was starved for fuel?

Q. 2 - - - if Q1 is yes, how'd it rev out before & after the drilling?

Q. 3 - - - what size drill bit did you use?

Q. 4 - - - please describe the the step-by-procedure you followed in doing the drill out, e.g. disassembly of the petcock, etc.

Let's say a "friend" has a de-baffled stock exhaust and performed the shelfectomy before he read Jon's notes on how useless it is. The mid-range isn't great now but the bike warms up nicely and is actually a bit smoother. This friend has shims lying around to slide on the needles.

Without an expensive tuning, needle adjustment, and jet adjustment. Could the shims theoretically bump up the lean-ness in the mid-range and return the powerband to close-to-stock? Obviously the shelfectomy cannot be reversed.

The issue is not really with the shelf removal, which does little to enhance or hinder, but with the shape of the stock needles.

I believe Kawasaki recognised how important the signature sound of a 360 degree parallel twin was, especially as the bikes the W seeks to honour had much less silencing, so they allowed the exhaust note to be clearly audible.

The only problem was, as revs rose, the noise levels started to creep above any noise regulations so they had a dilemma...How to keep the crisp mid range sound, but muffle the ( rarely used by their target owners) top end.

The answer was to force the bike's fuel mixture to get progressively more rich as revs increased. A rich mixture sounds duller and more muffled than a correct mixture and by effectively removing the high frequency component of the sound, they could stay under the noise regulations threshold.

To make it go rich they installed over-large main jets, and to make the mixture correct everywhere BUT the rev band above 6000rpm ( where the needles are fully out of the main jets) they created extra fat needles with almost no taper...They look more like roofing nails than carburetor needles!.

Basically, the stock bike has perfect mixture right up until it hits 6000 rpm where the full enrichening effect of the over-size main jets is felt as the needles come fully clear.

The de-baffling allows a bit more exhaust to flow which makes the entire rev range lean while partially correcting the over-rich top end.

Because the needles have very little taper, the shims do very little...far less than they would on a conventional tapered needle.

The answer to restoring the mid range is to purchase a Dyno-jet (or similar) Jet/needle set and fit the needles. these needles are adjustable, but more importantly, have a normal taper, giving the mid-range the correct fuel while the sharper, thinner tips still allow the top end to work.

Fitting needles is easy, requiring the removal of the four top screws holding each chromed carb 'top' down, lifting out the diaphragm and slide assembly, and simply pulling out the needle retaining clip.
it is A LOT less hassle than anything to do with the airbox!

My understanding from combing through all prior posts about the accelerator pump, yours especially, is that
it's made up of many small parts a whole, and on the left carb.

My question: is the "O" type gasket just for the left side bowl, or for both he left and right.

I copied Ruari on this post because I think he once had the same issue.

Anyone else in the group feel free to chime in as well.

3 Manual vs Stock Petcock Flow Rate

To those who have swapped in a manual petcock (part #5LP-24500-01-00 ) for the stock vacuum operated
one, do you know if the manual one has the same, less or greater fuel flow volume rate as the stock piece?

Re: Manual vs Stock Petcock Flow Rate

The below is what I used. ?The 8mm outlet is as near to the outlet on the OEM petcock as I could source.?

Yamaha YFM350? part number? 2HR-24500-02-00 - simple Off-On-Res petcock with a 8mm outlet. One from ebay with a gasket at a fairly good price of less than $20.00. Fits right up, seals well, a good petcock with a positive off position.

I do not have any experience with the part number you referenced, it may be near or the same as I used but I sourced based on the outlet size ?/ type, ?and matching flange type.

I believe there is an updated number for a TW200, but I do not know the specs on that one personally.

Finally committed to doing the job on my own . . . but with the watchful eye of an experienced friend
looking over shoulder.

I'll also be changing both float needles to deal with an annoying fuel seepage issue I've tolerated
for far too long. The friend also has all the tools/gadgets needed to sync the carbs as well.

I'm about to order all the needed parts from the local Kaw dealer. Other than the bowl gaskets, what
else should be on the list? I already have allen head screws in situ on the bowls, done when friend
helped me install a FactoryPro jet kit some time ago.

Other than parts, advice/insights also welcomed.

Much thanks in advance for the info.

Dear all,

I have a 2012 W800 that has done about 5kmiles, most with me over the last three months as I bought it little used with on 2k on it. It was serviced at 3k
Recently i think the fuel pump is noisier than it,s normal tick, the reason I think it is the fuel pump is, that if I push the throttle backward to the stop to cut down the revs, it disappears. loud enough to think its tappets.

Also on turning the key on, during the pre-check it can make a very loud unhealthy noises , but only sometimes.

I have 4 bikesand been riding for 40 years and am experienced enough to know it is a problem not paranoia !

I read somewhere that the was some fueling issue with this model could this be the problem do I need to do any mods or change anything to rectify or is it normal ?

Apart from this I am very happy? with the bike and is a constant surprise to me how much I enjoy it !

Re: W800 noisy fuel pump and griding noises when the ignition is turned on.

Mr Peter Keage

Hi Gary
Yes there was a recall on the fuel pump for this model (same as mine).
The dealers in Dubai would have little interest in following up.
Also in the Gulf fuel quality is highly varisble. Stick to Shell might be the best.
All the best,
Peter

I've put Shorai Lithium Iron n batteries in both my Ws. If you are not a weekly (or even daily) rider motorcycle lesd/acid batteries are just not very durable, I've read about some of you getting very long life from your stock batteries but that has not been my experience over th years with many Bikes . The point is, if your battery neds to be replaced do yourself a favor, spend the extra money and get a Lithium-irom battery. It'll shave 5 lbs. of the weight and hold a charge for 6months at? a crack

Hey? Jake
I used to have 3- 5 gallon containers I would fill with non-ethanol gas when we only had one station on the Island that carried non-ethanol, that might be a little cheaper than buying that Tanker! Its a solution that appeals to my Scottish Heart! Speaking of Scot's, I haven't seen any posts from Roy lately?
BTW gas docks at the local marina might also have the good stuff and all you need is that 5 gallon container!

Paul, Les is in Dallas. We don't have a source of ethanol free gas anywhere near the city. If we rode to one, filled up the tank, we'd run out by the time we got home. We are not left with any option besides buying a tanker full of guzzoline.

A few hours ago I saw a vehicle that'd haul that tanker.....you wanna get out of here? You talk to me.

IF YOUR w HAS BEEN RUNNING ON eTHANOL/GAS BLEND AND YOU ARE HAVING STARTING/ROUGH IDLING ISSUES? YOU LIKELY HAVE FOULED CARBURETORS. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BYPASS ALL THE CHEMICAL GAS TREATMENTS, THEY RARELY WORK WHEN THE CARBS ARE ALREADY GUMMED UP, TAKE THE CARBS OFF THE BIKE AND CLEAN THEM! THEN FIND A SOURCE FOR ETHANOL FREE GAS AND RUN ONLY THAT IN YOUR W.
