Re: I've Done It (I think)

Top boxes create a low pressure zone behind the rear wheel. They generate drag, but the high pressure air is pushing against the front of the box and does little more than slow the bike. Also, top boxes are invariably sitting in the midst of the turbulence created by the rider. They may well actually marginally improve aerodynmamics by filling in some of that low pressure zone.

They do however bugger up the C0G...:-)

. On the W the low pressure is generated behindf the rider and the rider is forced back into that zone. Because the rider resists being pulled back, the force is directed down through his arse onto the seat which squashes the rear suspension. The pillion fills in that hole and their low pressure zone develops behind them BUT it isa lot less because rider plus pillion make a longer more aerodynamic shape.

My Venture has a warnning attached to the trunk lid, it says do not exceed
85 MPH with luggage attached. The Ws I have owned wander at 120 MPH or so
(but didn't with Marcia sitting behind me, so I think it is aerodynamics).

The top box didn't affect the CB 400 F up to where it leveled off at 100
MPH, and I rode the Nighthawk 650 up to 100 MPH without a problem with a box
on the back, which doesn't mean that there would not have been a problem,
had I gone faster.

You won't get one. The Police one's weave for the same reason the W
does...Big coppers punch a big hole in the air and create a BIG low pressure
zone. The cops are scratching their heads because their Pans are fitted with
up-rated load adjusting shocks but they'll still sometimes but not always
weaving at high speed. They've cottoned on to the extra weight thing, but
not the torso size of the rider. They haven't yet spotted that its the big
chested burly officers that are getting the problems.....

Think I should tell 'em?

Jon

I took it up to speeds in excess of the normal motorway speeds and no
weave at all. however mine will have the top box fitted so I will find out
if that has an adverse effect

Cool!

Now you can get embroiled in the famous copper killing weave debates
that are consuming all the Pan riders at the moment.

I spoke to a Pan riding copper last month and I'm pretty sure its the
same as the W weave!

As some of you will know recently I have been considering a more
touring style of appliance. Today I rode tested a ST1300 Pan European. I was
offered a really good trade in for my CB1300S against a brand new Pan
complete with a package off accessories worth 850 for less than the list
price of a standard bike.
Hopefully I will be concluding the deal next week
Dick
