Fred – I am encroaching on 70 y/o here and don’t feel “nails tough” anymore.? – kd5kc

?

<<<? speaking as an athletic coach… and now 80 years of age myself:

?

I am glad to have completed the Pikes Peak marathon 12 times, last time when I was 67 yrs old.? There are plenty of people who ran it even after age 80.? I also ran the R-2-R-2-R at age 67.

?

But I digress…?

?

Ashby Harper was headmaster of Albuquerque Academy which had its own Olympic size indoor pool.? Nice.? He was a swimmer.? He had an ambition to swim the English Channel.? He retired from Academy and then swam the English Channel, at age 66, the oldest to do it at that time.

?

In 1992, at age 76, he defeated a field of much younger swimmers in a, well… to quote his obituary:? “Somewhat later, poor Ashby raced a younger swimmer to a West Coast open water finish and touched him out only to die on the sandy beach… As of 2002, he remains the oldest English Channel swimmer”

?

… my coaching viewpoint: it ain’t what you can still do, it is what you can recover from.

You are probably right that I could still do it, mind and attitude are a big part of any mission.? But what would the cost be the next day when I couldn’t get out of bed??

You’re nails tough, bet you could do it.? No question, that’s the top of the Needle alright!

?

Some scoff at my go-light endeavor, but that’s what made my ascent possible.? Entire HF set-up just one pound.? Could have left the pole at home, cut it to a half pound, lay the wire antenna on the rocks, would have worked fine!? Just need … w-a-t-e-r.? ????

I did the Needles a few years before I made W5-SOTA a thing.? I made several contacts from up top on FM-only, 6m-2m-70cm-23cm using an Icom IC-T81 H/T.? Several friends were surprised at how well all of those bands propagated from up there.

I do not think I could make that hike today.? We did an over-night, 1 full day up, sleep at the top, one full day down.? I left the ground with 2.5 gallons of water, that is about 21-pounds or water.? 1-1/2 gallons was frozen, 1-gallon was in the bladder for drinking.? I also carried 2 frozen bottles of gator-aid.? We all cached about a half-gallon at about 1/3 of the way up and another half-gallon at 2/3 of the way up.? I needed about 1gal on the way up, drank the gator-aid with dinner and breakfast, and with less than a ?-gallon of water left started back down.? Picking up the two cached refills on the way down, they were fully melted but pleasantly cold, and finished the hike with a couple of cups of water left.

It was an epic adventure.? But I do not think I could do it again, and certainly not in one day!

Worked Brian, NM5BG, activating in California, on forty-meters… and

?

Doc called my attention to K9ROB who is visiting from Anchorage, Alaska, and had alerted to activate the Organ Needle, W5N/OR-001.? The needle is a challenging hike.? I activated it in 2014 oh HF, Alan and Mike activated it in 2016 on 2M.? Those are the only activations of this well known high point.

?

Rob posted for 20M SSB only and I would not have expected to hear him.? As luck would have it; there was short skip, and even more unusual, I found my microphone beneath a bunch of stuff in a drawer.

?

I got the SOTA COMPLETE, the only opportunity for it so far, and Doc worked him also such that he has worked both of the HF activations of this peak.? Great series of photos from a hiker, here:

?

This peak is a fun challenge? You hike from about 5,500 ft to 9,000 ft and look down on Las Cruces more than 6,000 ft below!? I see that in 2022 someone installed a rope ladder for the previously free climb, I guess it could be ignored, hi hi

Don and I attempted W5N/GW-008 , Corner Mountain, on Saturday. It was a long drive, over 5 hrs just to get to trail head parking. Actually no trail at all. Last several miles was slow go over very rocky FS roads. Saw a flock of wild turkeys on the way up along with lots of deer. Once on top we hiked down the ridge a ways to check out the easiest way up the summit, which is covered with dead fall.? Contacted Dale, AAOY, and found out he had parked down off the ridge line near a lake. Said the hike was rough. We did not have enough time to hike up to the summit and then back down before it would be dark so we decided in order to get this one we would need to stay over night in Reserve and start out early. Looked like a nice summit (see pics). Get this one in the summer. 73 all Geo

Fred, thanks for the contact and note here. I'm packing up and this little guy came to check out my equipment. W6/SC029 was perfect for me today. One hour drive from the San Diego airport and a steady one hour hike to the top. I had to hop some boulders to get my dipole setup but found a nice log to sit on.?

On a more positive note Paul, I got my final diagnosis from my oncologist/surgeon
Last week.

He told me that he had bad news and good news.

He told me to sit down and then he said:
The bad news is that I will not see you anymore, I will not have to.

The good news is that your MRI's and the Biopsy he did the week before came
Back with the results....?

The surgery he did 18 months ago, the CRYOABALATION (freezing of the prostate?
Cancer) had removed the cancer and I was cancer free.

So, Paul please prayers sent up for you and for your wife.??

There is hope.

Wanted to bring you up to date on things here. Been a rough month.
Jan had a heart attack Jan. 7. Upon her return, she fell several times in the home. She just has so little strength left in her arms and legs. I had to call 911 as I could not lift her off the floor by myself.

She fell again last Tuesday trying to walk to the bathroom. Said she blacked out and fell. Ambulance took her to our local hospital due to extremely high blood pressure and heart in tachycardia. She is now in Albuquerque getting heart care and an assessment. They have determined that she needs total care. They are likely going to place her in a skilled nursing facility (nursing home) next week. Whether hospice care or long term hasn't been determined yet, but she won't be returning home. So slowly adjusting to living in an empty house without her.

I have my prostate surgery next Wednesday in Albuquerque, so will be hospitalized myself at least Wednesday and Thursday. I'm sure I will find out more next week where Jan will be placed.

I do thank you for your prayers and concern.

Thanks for sharing that.? I’ll settle for a QSO, and I’ll pass on the vacation plans.
