Action Plan W5N CO 001

开云体育

On Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 0800, we will depart my QTH for Mount Sedgwick. FS roads are in good shape except for last climb to the summit. This last mile climb to the summit seems to get rougher each year. While the other FS roads are maintained, this section is not. Recommend 4WD and high clearance, low range a plus. Smaller summit but there is some trees for shade. Weather will be sunny and warm with light winds. See pics for fun.

Sad to report that Bob is SK.? He was a frequent chaser.? He lived in Glenwood Springs, CO in summer, and Moab UT in winter.? I didn’t know that he was an avid key collector.? I wondered why he hadn’t been chasing this year.? Found this…?

Nice photos. That is a nice scenic drive past Quemado Lake and around Slaughter Mesa. Glad to hear the roads were in good shape so close to the summit.

After researching the best drive down to the summit, we decided on the Quemado Lake route. see GPX Drive?? This turned out to be a fantastic route. All dirt roads in excellent shape to the Jeep trail. ( 34.036343, -108.428894)?? This short drive up, on the jeep trail, to the saddle is SUBARU capable. No rocks to speak of, only a few berms. From where we parked it was an easy .3 mile hike along the ridge to the summit. We found a log in sheet at the top. see pics? This is a great summit with lots of tall pines and open space under neath. Contacted F4WBN and OH1MM before the spotting site crashed. Had a great time.
Enjoy the pics?? WB5USB Geo

Been there done that John. Mine was on Rough Mtn. No RF.? Opened the case and found the connector was only on 1 pin. Correctly reseated it and all was good.........except it was my own fault. The day before I was in there doing some kind of maintenance and must have mess up re-connecting it. When I got home the hot glue gun was my friend.

W5N Monthly Activity Summary: September 2024

Good evening! It's Conor and I'm here with your summary of W5N activity for the month of September.

In a word, wow. It was a high-volume month. A few highlights.

First, we should recognize the initial activation. On the 11th, Tom, K6TAA became the first SOTA op to activate Santa Barbara, PW-005. I am eager to learn the details, but my guess is that this peak had remained unactivated because it requires a lengthy overnight hike or possibly a ride in on horseback. Tom bagged 7 contacts in 6 minutes and that's all it took. Bravo!

We had several rare peaks with fewer than 5 previous activations, all in GF and AP. Those were W5N/AP-010 (9227) by AA7OY; W5N/GF-002 (Eagle Peak) by George and Don; and W5N/GF-031 (Reserve Benchmark) by N1CLC visiting from California.

Speaking of visitors. In addition to Christian, N1CLC, who logged 9 last month, Andy N4LAG and KQ4IAM paid us a visit and did 5. W7CBR and W7SKH came over from Arizona for bag full of 10 pointers. Mark N0MTN also finished up a trip from CO.

Also noteworthy, a pair of triples from Fred WS0TA and John K1JD in EL and OT.

Finally, be on the lookout for Aiden, KE5MOW, a new activator from Silver City who did his fourth peak this month.

Till next time...
CN

Action Plan

Wednesday October 2, 2024, we will depart my QTH by 0800 en-route to W5N/AP-010? 9227. This is a new summit for me so no pics or tracks yet. (see after action)? Our route down will take us by Quemado Lake then south to the summit. From what I hear the final road up to the summit is like a jeep trail. If not passable we will take the short hike to the summit.
Anyone wishing to join us is welcome..? QRV around 1800.?? Geo

After Action Report: W5N/MG-010 North Baldy
Tim, Don and I headed out to North Baldy on Wednesday the 25 of September.
The FS road up from Magdalena to the summit is not SUBARU country. High clearance and 4WD with low range and lockers is recommended. Road is rocky, rough and steep. Once parked it was a short hike up the ridge to the summit where we set up ops. On the ridge line we saw a couple of deer. see pics and video link for fun? 73 all WB5USB

Maybe I could have activated it when it was still a mountain. WB5NEN was the PIO for the mine, but has since retired. Only a few miles from my QTH.

?On the first peak yesterday, I discovered there was no RF out of the KX2, not a good omen for a 3 peak day. I pulled the back off, battery dangling but connected, and found that the BNC had loosened slightly. Tightened it by hand but still no RF. Poking around inside the case near the BNC, RF out resumed. The KX2 case was open for the entire first activation since I had not conclusively identified the problem. After the activation, I took 5 minutes to make sure everything I could see was properly seated etc. The case was closed and there were no problems during the 2 additional activations.

This morning I hooked the KX2 to my Bird wattmeter and dummy load. No RF again! I noticed that the white connector closest to the BNC in the attached photo didn’t seem to be fully seated. Once seated, RF out resumed. I added a blob of silicone caulking so that the connector remains seated.

?Lesson learned - Years of trips off road & hiking stresses our gear, and the effects can be cumulative!

Carol’s presentation Saturday got me thinking more about back-ups.? Generally, John and I are each other’s back-ups.? That is the lightest and most reliable back-up.? ?I have had relatively few failures, and they have taken many forms.? Most often a broken antenna wire usually at a trap, and I can tie it back together and still have the higher band(s).? John had a failure this time with a BNC connector coming loose. ?He was able to temporarily tighten it, good for the day at least.

Equipment failure means loss of a SOTA point, frustrating, but not life and death, so I don’t worry much about back-ups.? Still, a trapped 26 gauge antenna wire, with each additional activation, the wire becomes more susceptible to fatigue.? So I made this #28 EFHW 20M only antenna which as you can see weighs less than an ounce with its heavy-duty carrying case (a sandwich bag).?

?

This back-up I don’t mind carrying.
